Overview
Kemper sits hidden in the trees of the Cornish countryside in a fold of the hills just north of Bodmin Moor. Its a space at first exciting, then relaxing. After you’ve run round finding the bunk bedroom, the second king-size bed hidden in the “bedbox” and the en suite shower, you can settle on the deck or the brown leather corner sofa. Meals whipped up on the gas range can be eaten at the huge wooden dining table indoors or outside, before you gather in the warmth of the wood-burner for board games and cards. The spaces at Ekopod are each set in their own area of the meadow, close enough for groups to create a community vibe if several are booked together. You might see your neighbours from time to time and meet other guests if you head up to the main barn to charge devices or investigate the snacks on offer at the honesty shop. Kemper is off-grid, with solar lighting and gas power for the water.
Kemper’s peaceful location means you can head over to the harbour town of Padstow, explore the moors or take to the beaches and the coastal path. A lovely section of the latter links Tregardock to the cafe on the long Trebarwith Strand and there’s also the Camel Trail, an old railway line converted into a superb route for cyclists and walkers. Out on the moors you can climb Roughtor and Brown Willy, Cornwall’s highest peaks, or head south to take in the stunning Golitha falls, using the 7 or 8 mile route from Sibblyback Lake to turn the visit into an energetic day trip. Owners Matt and Rachel can give you some tips on their favourite spots as well as great places to stock up on Cornwall’s legendary local produce if you can’t find what you need in the on-site honesty shop.

Outdoor & active
You can walk the coastal path as far as you like (it's quite a long loop) but a particularly pretty section is the walk from Boscastle to Tintagel. We recommend you park in Boscastle, get the bus to Tintagel and walk back.
There's also the Camel Trail, a 17 mile traffic-free cycle and walking path based on the route of the old railway.
The surrounding area offers not only some incredible scenery, with miles of Bodmin Moor to explore, but plenty of activities. You could climb Roughtor and Brown Willy, the highest peaks in Cornwall and the whole area is criss-crossed by walking and cycling trails.
Just one of the many sights is Golitha Falls, a long series of cascades located a short walk along the river Fowey through ancient oak and beech woodland. If you start from the carpark on the east side of Sibblyback lake, it's a 7 or 8 mile hike.
If you fancy learning to surf, Widemouth beach is a popular spot with plenty of places to hire gear or get lessons.
Places to visit
Tintagel castle, supposedly (along with a few hundred other places) the legendary birth place of King Arthur, is just north from you.
Padstow is just half an hour up the coast and aside from being a beautiful port town, it's home to Rick Stein's restaurant, fishmonger and cookery school.
Port Isaac, Boscastle and Bude - visit one of these small coastal fishing villages
Of course, if you're in the area and you're staying at Ekopod, you can't miss the chance to visit The Eden Project. Cornwall's iconic complex of biodomes is much more than a botanical garden, with activities and educational things to see and do, making a full day trip almost a necessity rather than a possibility.

Meet your hosts
Ekopod was established with just two glamping pods in 2010, when glamping was just getting started, we believe it was the first site to have a Geodesmic dome in the UK. Matt and Rachael (a brother and sister team) took over Ekopod in June 2017.
Their move into glamping was inspired by backpacking travel that involved wild camping in Russia and staying in yurts in Mongolia. Blown away by the sense of wonder and adventure that being so remote and living so close to nature can create they came back determined to provide that magic for their guests in the UK. With over 30 years of hospitality experience between them, in hotel and restaurant management respectively, taking over a glamping business seemed to be the perfect venture
While looking for sites they found and fell in love with Ekopod. Since taking over at Ekopod they have restored the two pods that were there originally and have now constructed 5 more. In 2021 they won gold in the Cornwall Tourism Awards for Glamping Business of the Year and Bronze for Wildlife Friendly Tourism Business.
Their vision is
• To provide a sense of remoteness; all the glamping units are set in their own space, with private terraces and away from each other.
• To provide a relaxing way for guests to get close to nature, enjoy starry skies and outside adventures but with more luxury and ease than a standard camping trip allows.
• To give back to the land the site is on, by working on habitat restoration for native British species and creating an environmentally friendly business
Environmental policy
The site is designed to try and be as environmentally friendly as possible. The site is off grid so there is no wi-fi or no electricity in the pods. Water is provided by the onsite spring and they have a bio digestor for waste. There is electricity in the main barn for charging items (all the electricity from our energy supplier is from renewable sources). The lighting in the pods is by solar power and candlelight, the heating in the pod is by wood burner
Wildlife
One of the most important things Matt and Rachael want to do at Ekopod is to make the site as wildlife friendly as possible.
They have drawn up a 5 year habitat management plan with a local ecologist to create more biodiversity. So far work has included woodland management, bracken management and creating wildlife ponds.
They have also worked with a local wildlife sanctuary to release rescued hedgehogs back into the wild at Ekopod.
In the spring and summer quite often swallows nest in the kitchens of Eyl and Nessa so if you have some swallow babies keeping you company please don’t worry, the parents seem not to care about humans being around. Matt and Rachael apologise for the mess they make and thank you for helping us look after them!
There are dormice, bird, bat and hedgehog boxes around site, bird feeding stations and they deliberately keep a lot of the site wild to provide habit and shelter for all the insects, amphibians, birds and mammals that live at Ekopod. For your wildlife sightings you’ll have most luck early in the morning (especially with the deer).
They’d love it while you’re there if you would consider downloading the ORKS app (Online Recording Kernow and Scilly) and record any wildlife you spot!
There are some wonderful pockets of wilderness around Ekopod for nature lovers where owls, red kite, peregrine falcon, deer, foxes, otters and even beavers have been sighted. On the North Coast you can take wildlife boating trips where if you are lucky it possible to see anything from seals, to dolphins, whales and basking sharks.
Ekopod is a proud business supporters of The Cornish Wildlife Trust

Myself and 7 others stayed at Kemper over the weekend and had the best time! We loved the little treat box we were given, the tent was so clean and well stocked up. We all loved the outside space and the campsite itself was beautiful. Hearing the stream all the time was lovely and there were so many bird noises we all enjoyed listening to that instead of music most nights! The beds were all comfy (even the bunk beds). The bathroom was stocked with shampoo and hand wash which helped those who forgot things. All of us loved the egg chair and outside furniture as well.

Amazing! My family try and do 2/3 Canopy & Stars properties a year and this was the best so far! Amazingly well thought out property and site, all you could ask for and more!

It was stunning. The location was beautiful, the tent was roomy, decorated so well and very clean. The river was lovely and it was nice and quiet too. Just perfect.

Wonderful stay. Very relaxing and the grandchildren loved it. The hosts were very responsive to any issues or queries. The site more than one accommodation but it was very quiet and everyone was lovely. I definitely recommend Kemper and Ekopod site as a whole

We had an incredible stay at Ekopod, from the bbq box of venison meat to the breakfast hamper and even the treats left for our dog. It was a beautiful place that lived up to expectations.

Really enjoyed it

Had a lovely short break staying at Kemper - fabulous location - it was like being in the canopy looking out at the tree tops and listening to the birds. Gorgeous place and plenty of space for 4 of us.
11/06/2021Belinda
A peaceful stay in a safari tent treehouse with friends - with beautiful crisp white linen and a lovely warm shower - in the Cornwall countryside. It was very comfortable accommodation and really stylish, with wooden decor, wood burner, leather sofa, etc.

We had a Brilliant time at Ekopod! We stayed in Kemper and it was magical. The whole 'tent' and veranda (as we liked to call it) was spotless and really clean. They provided everything you needed and all really good quality too. The bed was really comfy and I was surprised how fantastic the shower was. We were woken up each morning but the wildlife, which there were tonnes of. I often drank my coffee whilst watching the deer below near the river.

A fantastic week with Matt and Rachel. Superb tent and facilities. Very private location, set amongst the trees. Our hosts were extremely helpful and knowledgeable about the local area, and went out of their way to help us. The tent was well stocked, beautiful bed linen and comfy beds yet with a wonderful sense of living in the wild. There were six in our group but we never felt crowded. The beautiful balcony/verandah meant we could all be outside even in the rain! We all felt we could be in a tropical rainforest! The woodburner was easy to use and great for drying tea towels. Clean modern bathroom facilities with plenty of hot water. The barn offered phone charging and freezer facilities, which was very convenient. Booked at fairly short notice in view of Covid we were delighted with our choice.

We had a brilliant time, the safari tent was just lovely and toasty warm once we got the stove going! We had everything we needed and the welcome goodies were lovely

Kemper was a fabulous place to stay! So much character...Perched on the hillside above the rushing river.Only 27 minutes drive from the coast of Tintagel, Trebarwith and Boscastle....The woodburner was essential for the chilly October mornings and evenings, and soon had the place cosy and warm. The atmosphere in the evening with candles everywhere was magical. The beds were extremely comfy, the duvets massively thick to stay warm, and we were even supplied with hot water bottles...We had a slight problem keeping the gas cooker lit, but Matt was very helpful in getting it sorted out for us. Highly recommended.
18/10/2019Jeff
We had an amazing time celebrating my husbands 40th birthday as a family of 5 at Kemper. The kids loved the space and we loved the luxury camping experience, the beds were more comfy the ones at home and the wood burner was lovely to sit by in the evenings.
21/06/2019Becky
We were 8 mums on a walking weekend and found kemper to have exact level of luxury we needed. The deck was beautiful for yoga in the morning sun and Rachel and Matt were welcoming. A lovely stay.
10/05/2019Jennifer
We were on a family Easter break and wanted somewhere big enough for 8 of us and love Cornwall. We loved the tent and the facilities there. The fact we had our own toilet and shower was lovely and certainly not like camping, fortunately. We managed to use the bbq on one night whilst sitting in the lovely big balcony. We also used the log burner every night and most mornings and had plenty of logs provided. The fridge was a good size to and we were able to go and change the freezer blocks regularly to keep items cold. They provided nice big white towels and the place was very clean. The extra touches like hot water bottles was a great idea and were needed on the cold nights. Milk and enough tea and coffee was provided for the first couple of days as was salt and pepper and some biscuits and cheese and chutney. We arrived a little early and they were happy to let us in as it was ready. We had a problem with the hot water and I called them and they came within 5 minutes and fixed it. All in all a lovely place and a lovely stay. If only we could have changed the weather.
22/04/2019Nicola
We had a wonderful stay at the Kemper. This is our second safari tent experience in Cornwall. Great location and a nice community feel with the other eco pods near by.
15/04/2019rachel
Amazing! Kemper was beautiful, really lovely touches like hot water bottles, toiletries, welcome pack, fluffy pillows - the location was beautiful with a lovely stream running down by the tent.

Had a great 5 day’s in our Safari Tent, we are a family of four, kids being 10 &12. My daughter loved her little snug bedroom, beds are comfy and real cosy. The place itself is quiet with that away from the madding crowd feeling, all the facilities are great in the tent as well as in the little barn area they have, great wood burner for evenings playing games with the kids and no mobiles rule from us We only booked about 5 days before we were due to go so we had plenty of space as it caters for 8 although I would say it would be pretty busy if you had 8 people staying as the seating/sofa area is probably enough for 4, dining area 6. It’s all within reasonable driving distance of great beaches/pubs/strawberry picking and The Eden project, but far enough away to be out of the hustle of August in Cornwall

We're super excited to be adding Matt and Rachael's latest space. A wonderful addition to the collection. The feedback for Nessa should give you a good feel for what it will be like. Book a stay and be the first to write a review!

Fantastic location, close to so many great days out for families. The site is absolutely stunning and so well thought out. Lots of space for a family of 6 plus a dog, with all the comforts of home.

Had a lovely short break staying at Kemper - fabulous location - it was like being in the canopy looking out at the tree tops and listening to the birds. Gorgeous place and plenty of space for 4 of us.

We had an amazing time celebrating my husbands 40th birthday as a family of 5 at Kemper. The kids loved the space and we loved the luxury camping experience, the beds were more comfy the ones at home and the wood burner was lovely to sit by in the evenings.

We were 8 mums on a walking weekend and found kemper to have exact level of luxury we needed. The deck was beautiful for yoga in the morning sun and Rachel and Matt were welcoming. A lovely stay.

We had a wonderful stay at the Kemper. This is our second safari tent experience in Cornwall. Great location and a nice community feel with the other eco pods near by.
