Overview
You'll approach the Lakeside Lodge down steps carved out of the slope and through a fancy, carved door. This treehouse is in fact made up of three pentagon-shaped rooms, co-built by owner Stéphane. The kitchen and living area makes up the central room, spacious with a high, beamed ceiling. You couldn’t be closer to the trees; there are two tree trunks (one ash and one oak) growing up and through the high ceiling, framing the view over the lake through the large windows. Off this room is the main double bedroom, with an ensuite bathroom and walk-in shower. Finally, a mini staircase leads up to the cosy upstairs bedroom, perfect for kids, with fun cut-out windows in the shape of an oak leaf and eagle.
Perhaps best of all is the large terrace overlooking the lake, where you can sit back in the rustic, wooden chairs and enjoy the view and the wildlife around you while you sip a cool drink. You'll be self-catering, but consider the Treehouse Cabin just out of sight through the trees if you'd like your breakfast provided in a hamper for you.
Back down on the ground, there’s an outdoor swimming pool and hot tub within the 20 acres of grounds, plenty of outdoor games equipment, you can fish in the lake and there are bikes available to borrow. Château Gauthié is surrounded by hiking trails if you want to explore a bit further and there's plenty to visit nearby from medieval villages and châteaux to natural caves.

Meet your hosts
After many years spent in Paris and London, owners Florence and Stéphane moved to the country to bring up their children in the same sort of environment that they themselves had known as kids. And in any case, Florence was longing to do some gardening, and Stéphane was longing for some space for woodwork and raising chickens. Stéphane's parents, Francette and Jacques, had already refurbished the château and started a B&B after retiring, and Florence and Stéphane joined them in 2004.
Apart from a common love for nature and for meeting people from different countries, Stéphane likes cooking, wine, “Orpington” breed chicken raising and wood construction work. And Florence loves old movies, pruning roses and tending to the garden with the children and the help of Stéphane’s mother Francette.

Wildlife & Environment
The grounds at Château Gauthié cover many different types of environment, from open fields and dry grass, lawns and meadows to cooler and damper areas around the lake and a little creek meandering down from a spring.
Florence and Stéphane make sure that some wild corners are left for the wildlife, and depending on the season, you may spot frogs, toads, rabbits and hares, squirrels, garden dormouse, plenty of common little birds, swallows, birds of prey, ducks, moorhens, herons, owls, badgers, foxes, hedgehogs, deer, partridges, pheasants, quails, larks, woodpeckers, butterflies, dragonflies, stick insects, lightning bugs, praying mantis, cicadas, golden orioles, kingfishers, lizards, wild orchids, and a few not so common trees among classical oaks, ashes, linden, maples, acacias, hackberry trees...

We had a fabulous stay in the tree house which has been constructed incredibly well and has a fully fitted kitchen and shower as good as at home, the views from the balcony over the pond were so relaxing with ducks and storks often coming to visit. We were very fortunate to have the beautiful pool and hot tub to ourselves also for the whole stay, if you are looking for peace and tranquillity surround by beautiful countryside then this is the place to stay.

Lovely place, would definitely stay here again. Beautiful unique lakeside treehouse and grounds where everything has been very well thought out. Amazing pool and hot tub. Very welcoming hosts with friendly dogs. So grateful that I was bought a gift card as I would have never known about this place!

The treehouse is an amazing spot to stay, the structure and light filled areas are great with the outlook over the water. We arrived late and Florence was very accommodating and helped show us around. We had visits to the markets in Issigeac and Bergerac, and the kids loved the castle at Bridoire with the games. The treehouse was great for children with cot provided upstairs, we did have to watch our one year old on the stairs and outside steps.

The stay was absolutely fantastic. The place is so relaxing. Great tree house, pool and jacuzzi. Florence and were so nice. The photos are really nice but to be honest it is much nicer in real life. It is so close to Bergerac which is gorgeous and the little hamlets and villages around are so pretty. We highly recommend Gauthie Lakeside Treehouse.

Our absolute favorite for holiday in France. The most incredible place to stay, the Château and its huge park are beautiful, quiet and relaxing. Seeing their stork learning to fly over its lake was just an additional marvel

A magical week: the treehouse and its surrounds are beautiful, peaceful and joyful. We loved lazy mornings on the terrace watching the lake and forest come to life - with herons, storks, kingfishers, red squirrels, and rabbits - and cherished the evenings, too, when a whole new set of creatures come out to play! The treehouse is welcoming and well-appointed, with everything you'll need. Stephane and Florence are excellent hosts, always ready with recommendations for guests to make the most of the lovely area they live in. The meal we shared with other guests, cooked by Stephane, was truly something special. They have worked hard to create a haven for guests to relax and play and with great success. It was lovely just to potter about the grounds, discovering all its delights. We adored the pool and its view of the trees and played our fair share of badminton! The region offered a perfect mix of activities: ancient towns, historic sites, plentiful markets, and a great landscape for cycling and kayaking. Plus good food and good wine as standard! Thank you Stephane and Florence - we hope to return to Gauthié one day.

We have had a wonderful holiday. Florence and Stephane couldn't have been more welcoming and the treehouse was everything we had hoped it would be - comfortable, very well equipped and totally unique. The children loved the pool, I loved the hot tub and we all loved exploring the local area. There is so much to see and do if you're feeling adventurous or want to soak up the local atmosphere, or, alternatively, you can laze around and relax. There is an abundance of wildlife to watch and the dogs were a bonus! Thank you for a wonderful time.

This was the most relaxing and fantastic stay we have ever had in France, I would highly recommend it to anyone who just wants to get away from it all. The owners are lovely and were helpful in every way, they couldn't do enough to help with any questions we had and the tree house we stayed in was well equipped with everything we could have possibly needed. It truly was a five star break

Wow, all I can say. We have just returned from sensational week at Gauthie treehouse, near Issigeac, not far from Bergerac. Stunning grounds, gorgeous pool, spectacular treehouse and generous and welcoming hosts in Stefan and Florence. Our three children spent hours in the pool, piqueniquing around the lake, climbing trees and roaming about as explorers. The kind of holiday that will be etched into their memories for years to come. The treehouse was perfectly kitted out for a family which doesn't like to rough it, especially the Dad, who insists on hot shower, flushing toilet and a dishwasher. This had everything, as well as wireless in the Chateau. Just brilliant. We are waiting for Stefan to build a third treehouse and we'll be back!

We had a terrific stay at the Chateau Gauthier treehouse. The hosts were very friendly and helpful - they made us feel like it was a home from home. There was a large range of activities for us to enjoy during our stay. Every consideration had been given to the facilities and equipment provided, even a pair of binoculars to watch the wildlife. The setting was gorgeous and the atmosphere was very relaxed, hence I would unreservedly recommend a holiday at Stephane & Florence's treehouse

The tree house is in a beautiful location overlooking a peaceful lake and surrounded by trees. Beautifully built with an unexpectedly large bathroom with great shower. Kitchen very well equipped and even included a dishwasher. Plenty of hot water. Fantastic all surround terrace. Wonderfully quiet and fabulous views. Fantastic and relaxed hosts.
