More from Sawday's
We’re certainly guilty of the odd treehouse getaway in full pjs, but if you’re going to spend a few days living the high life in incredible style, it makes a lot of sense that you dress for the occasion. If nothing else – for the grid. And there’s no one that understands how to craft a fit to suit the mood and the moment like Alice Catherine. We got her travel itinerary for visiting Cran Darach Treehouse, thoughts on dressing for a wild escape, and her suggestions for some winter glamping wardrobe choices.
So, what did you get up to during your stay?
You’re just a short drive away from Harrogate if you’re staying at Cran Darach, a beautiful little town filled with independent shops and boutique. We spent an afternoon looking around and then stopped off at the infamous Betty’s Tearooms for coffee, and the best carrot cake I’ve ever tried!
Is there anywhere good to go shopping?
I popped into Toast as it’s one of my favourite stores to get inspired by when it comes to autumn/winter dressing. I also spotted a huge Oliver Bonus, and an old-fashioned sweet shop if you’re looking to do some gift shopping. If it’s a gloomy or rainy day and you need to kill an hour, then I highly recommend getting lost in Space Vintage – we lost a good couple of hours here and I regret nothing.
Did you manage to take in the culture?
On our last day we drove to Ripley Castle. It’s a great little excursion if you fancy an afternoon stroll and a hot chocolate. It’s home to a 14th century country house, and the surrounding scenery is beautiful! We were also recommended a day trip to Ripon by the lovely hosts, but we didn’t get chance on this occasion.
What was the favourite part of your stay?
Cran Darach is definitely the most luxurious treehouse I’ve ever stayed in! Everything you could possibly desire is at your fingertips so there’s really no reason to leave the grounds (especially if the weather is a bit rubbish). We spent our time playing board games, topping up the log burner, and running bubble baths on the balcony…
What item do you never travel without?
What item do you never travel without? At this time of year, I’d have to stay a chunky oversized jumper or my trusty Grenson boots! You can’t go far wrong if you have something to keep you warm and a sturdy pair of footwear when packing for an outdoor trip. The rest is down to where you’re staying, the weather forecast, and what sort of trip you’re imagining. Will it be a cosy few nights by the fire? Muddy adventures exploring the local trails? Or perhaps a little bit of both!
Tell us what you find essential for the perfect treehouse escape?
I’ve been lucky enough to go on a few treehouse/cabin trips over the years, so I feel as though I’m well-seasoned in terms of curating the perfect packing list! During the autumn/winter months, there’s a few key pieces that spring to mind as being essentials, particularly if you want that element of cosy luxury and relaxation…
Some treehouses or cabins might only be heated by log burners, so it’s essential to pack some warm clothing for those inevitable cooler moments that might catch you off guard. A chunky jumper or cardigan that you can layer T-shirts or thermals underneath is a great way to save on luggage space. A pair of warm pyjamas and wool or cashmere socks are ideal for ensuring a warm night’s sleep and for pottering about in the morning. Life moves much slower when you’re in a treehouse so warm sleepwear is a must!
Alice’s Picks:
Donegal Grid Stitch Knitted Jacket by Toast
I’d also suggest taking an all-weather jacket that protects you from the elements. Something you can fit a chunky jumper underneath, but that also has a hood! This will come in handy for afternoon walks or just sitting by the fire in the evenings…
Alice’s Pick:
A pair of wellies or walking boots sounds obvious enough but I’ve often rocked up with just a pair of trainers and completely forgotten that the surrounding areas of the treehouse or cabin might be muddy etc. A pair of ankle length wellies are light to pack and still look great with your jeans even if you end up being blessed with blue skies and sunshine!
Alice’s Picks:
Last but not least! I always take a hat with me. Never underestimate how grateful you’ll be for a hat if you don’t fancy braving an outdoor shower or waiting for your hair to dry by the fire. Some places might have electricity and hairdryers available to you but even then, a hat will always come in handy.
Alice’s Picks:
Cotton Wool Knitted Hood by Toast
Any last tips?
