If you were watching World’s Most Secret Hotels the other day and found yourself trying to claw your way into the screen and get to the places it featured, here's a way you can stay in them that's much easier on your fingernails. Our owners have built cabins, yurts, shepherd’s huts and treehouses, and much, much more – some so unique, you can barely believe they’re real, let alone stay-able. To see the real scale of how many there are you’d have to trawl through a list of around 900, so to save you some time, here’s a few of the highlights, some of which you might have already spotted on the telly:
There’s electric heating, but the three-sided wood-burner warms the space beautifully. Circular skylights sunk into the curved ceiling give the space an atmospheric light, but when the sun shines you can sit out on the roof under the tree that overhangs the far end of the bunker. Step outside to sit on the swing and you can look out on the views that reach all the way to the Bristol channel. Hit the footpaths that lead straight from the hillside all across beautiful Monmouthshire. You can fish or swim in the river Usk, or head over to Llandegfedd for paddle boarding and other water sports. Finish the day sitting on the grass above the bunker and watching the sun set over the valley.
Treehotel in Sweden has created spaces straight out of a dream, from the weird and fantastical, to the creative and inspired, each space either amazes with its outlandishness or stuns with its style. You'd do well to check out Mirrorcube, The Cabin, UFO, Dragonfly, or Blue Cone -- each as amazing as the last, but one particular stunner is worth investigation -- The Bird's Nest:
Accessed via an electronic stepladder that descends and retracts via a keypad strapped on to one of the neighbouring trees, it's feathered with two bedrooms, a loo, living area, underfloor heating, designer kettle, stylish woollen rugs. The urge to hibernate will be strong and you may just want to stay put in your treehouse, listening to the rain on the roof with the stove purring quietly, leaving only to pad over to the wood fired sauna and back, but there's also lush boreal forests to trek through, husky-drawn sleds to ride, rustic Nordic cuisine to be sampled, and quite possibly the Northern Lights to be peeked at, so don't get too cosy.
If you’re a glamping aficionado – you might well have already met Earth Conker – a futuristic style sphere tucked into the Welsh countryside, but like her larger counterpart, she has a beautiful satellite that sits not far off in her orbit: Moon Conker.
Surrounded by woodland, nestled into the hillside and enclosed by a stream, this brilliantly designed pod has a wood burner to keep things cosy no matter the season, and windows set up high so you can stargaze in comfort at night. The outdoor kitchen nearby is kitted out with a gas cooker, a pizza oven, plenty of crockery and a sink; pop any perishables in the stream to keep them cool. Bathing in the twin outdoor tubs is a very special experience indeed.
You’re surrounded by 80 acres of woodland with lots of lovely walks – a four-mile hike gets you to Newbridge-on-Wye, or you can explore the scenic reservoirs and lakes of nearby Elan Valley or visit Hay-on-Wye. End your evening next to your firepit toasting marshmallows over a crackling fire or drift off to sleep in your pod: you’re in the Cambrian Dark Skies Park, so the night skies are fabulous.
Hands up if you’ve dreamed of building a lovely cabin in the woods? It’s been crafted with love and expertise by the ever-inventive team at Boutique Farm Bothies, with a log-burning range, an indulgent copper bathtub and floor-to-ceiling glass that gives amazing views while you’re lying in bed or lounging downstairs.
In a break with milking parlour tradition, a vintage larder cupboard has been turned into a cocktail bar (for making White Russians, presumably), and a reproduction Dansette record player hides a bluetooth connection. The private hot tub, designed to look like a milk tank, has plenty of room for four, the hammock is a lovely napping spot and the Vulcanus fire provides a crackling, atmospheric glow as well as a great place for some sophisticated al fresco cooking.
