About Canopy & Stars
More from Sawday's
If you’re gearing up to ask the biggest question of your life, the backdrop needs to be breathtaking. Think of the selfies. Wales is bursting with remote beauty spots just begging for someone to drop down on one knee at sunset. Pack the fizz, book a Canopy & Stars place to stay nearby and you’ve pulled off the perfect proposal. Take a look at our favourite romantic spots in Wales and the cabins and shepherd’s huts that you can float back to afterwards and start celebrating.
If you need to work up the courage to pop the question, the hike to beautiful Lyn Llywelyn lake should banish any nerves. There’s no need to worry about onlookers in this serene spot either. When you’ve got your breath back, get down on one knee and the awe-inspiring mountain backdrop is sure to elicit an enthusiastic yes. An hour away, charming Ty Twt cabin continues the theme of blissful seclusion with its own woodland to explore and a stream to dangle your toes in. Cuddle up together in front of the glowing wood burner, loll in the deckchairs in the garden and set the bar high for domestic bliss with a demonstration of your culinary skills in the outdoor cooking area.
You’re spoilt for choice at Poppit Sands in Cardigan Bay. You could drop down on one knee in the dunes, (carefully) hide that tiny box inside the turret of a sand castle or head out on a sailboat for an exhilarating proposal at sea. Just make sure you stick around for a glass of fizz on the beach at sunset afterwards. There are two gorgeous places to stay nearby – Damselfly is a beautifully appointed double shepherd’s hut with an idyllic garden, overlooking the Preseli Hills. A little nearer Poppit Sands, Ffynone Bach is practically as tall as Damselfly is wide with a romantic mezzanine bedroom, hot tub and easy access to breathtaking waterfalls with a plunge pool that’s perfect for wild swimming.
The spectacular dams and reservoirs of the Elan Valley in mid Wales win the prize for the most dramatic proposal setting. There are four dams to choose from but the elegantly curved Craig Goch is regarded by many as the most photogenic. Just check that your partner can hear you pop the question if the water’s thundering over the dam at the time. To up its romantic credentials even further, Eden Valley has International Dark Sky Park status so if you’re still there after sunset on a clear night, you can toast your engagement under a twinkling blanket of stars, planets and constellations. Less than an hour away, Shepherd’s Hill cabin is a luxurious love nest high in the Welsh hills with staggering views from the king-sized bed, the big copper bath and the hot tub.
Tap into some ancient folklore on Llanddwyn Island, a rocky outcrop off the coast of Anglesey that was once home to Saint Dwynwen, the Welsh patron saint of lovers. Walk over the causeway at low tide and head to stunning T?r Mawr Lighthouse to pop the big question in an elevated spot with views of Snowdonia in the distance. Stay fifty-minutes away at Cwt Coch, an open-plan bothy surrounded by meadows and woodlands on Anglesey’s ‘Wonderfully Wild’ glamping site. It’s the perfect place to stay cocooned in a love bubble as you BBQs under the stars, visit Puffin Island and stroll barefoot on award-winning sandy beaches.
When you’re down on one knee, Britain’s tallest single drop waterfall looks even more impressive. Often referred to as one of the seven wonders of Wales, Pistyll Rhaedr is captivatingly beautiful and surrounded by wild walks to the Berwyn moors. Cascading water is supposed to be energising (all those negative ions) so when you produce a sparkling ring, the effect should be positively euphoric. There won’t be a come down after all that excitement if you stay at Dragon’s Cruck cabin. Made from local timber it’s a magical space that feels like it grew out of the surrounding woods. In the evening, candles and lanterns fill the clearing with a soft light perfect for gazing into each other’s eyes and making plans for the future.
