You’ve found your soul mate, you want to spend the rest of your life with them and now there’s just the small matter of where to pop the question. You’ll reminisce about the proposal for years to come so make sure it’s unforgettable for all the right reasons. Scotland is just showing off with its sheer number of spectacular natural backdrops that might as well have been designed with romantic moments in mind. It’s all epic views, rugged beauty and barely a soul in sight to witness you getting down on one knee. Here’s a selection of incredible places to propose and gorgeous spaces to stay nearby.
Get your hiking boots on and head to the top of the Old Man of Storr at sunrise or sunset, for a proposal with spectacular views over Loch Leathan. The exhilarating climb up should banish any nerves, but wait for them to get their breath back before you produce something small and sparkling from your rucksack. We’d recommend visiting off-season for more privacy and to avoid the crowds. Stay an hour away at cosy Bothan Buidheag shepherd’s hut in a crofting village on the edge of the small village of Heaste. There are dramatic walks from the doorstep, “fairy pools” to explore, a communal fire pit for al-fresco BBQs and lovely restaurants nearby to celebrate your engagement with a slap up dinner.
Take a picnic to sheltered Calgary Bay, drop down on one knee in the fine white sand and once they’ve said yes (and it would be hard not to in this Hebridean beauty spot) pop the fizz and toast each other. To add to the atmosphere and photo opportunities, Calgary Wood, next to the beach, is home to the ‘Art in Nature’ project and you’ll discover beautiful sculptures and pieces of artwork dotted among the trees. Rustic Kittiwake Cabin is a short walk away, set back in a high spot with sweeping views of the bay so you can keep reliving that magic moment. It was built by local wood-sculptor Matthew and is topped with an old rowing boat to celebrate the Isle of Mull’s maritime heritage. The pretty port of Tobermory is nearby but the real adventures await out at sea with whale watching and puffin watching trips, and the chance to spot sea eagles.
One of the most remote Munros in Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park, Ben More literally means Big Hill and the Scots weren’t exaggerating. Adventurous couples who scale the summit will be rewarded with spectacular views – there aren’t many people who can say they proposed against the backdrop of Ben Nevis. Not a bad start to a lifetime of happiness. Continue the theme of stunning scenery by staying at the foot of mountains in Pilot Panther, a retro 1950s showman’s wagon with loch views from every window. The wagon is the grounds of Monachlye Mhor, a boutique hotel with exceptional foodie credentials. If you feel confident that your beloved will accept, pre-book a table in the chic Mhor restaurant to celebrate, or if you’d rather shut the world out and stay in a love bubble, the hotel can provide take away ingredients and eat-in goodies.
Easily the most photographed Scottish castle, iconic Eilean Donan is perched on a tiny island where three great sea lochs converge. For pure fairy tale romance, arrive at dawn or sunset and ask the big Q against a panoramic backdrop of mountain scenery. Once you’ve dried your eyes and taken some envy-inducing photos, you might notice that you can also tie the knot at Eilan Donan castle. Now there’s an idea. Stay nearby at cosy Bothan Beileag shepherd’s hut on the Isle of Skye and you can rush back and share the good news with Gilbert and George, the two resident donkeys. In this gorgeous, peaceful spot, it’s easy to hold on to the quiet magic and excitement of the proposal before returning to the real world.
The deep valley and towering mountains of Glencoe evoke an emotional reaction before you’ve even popped the question. A grand gesture feels fitting in this dramatic spot that has featured in world-famous films like Harry Potter, Braveheart and Skyfall. Just make sure you channel the romance of the silver screen when you propose. Stay nearby at gorgeous Blue Cottage where you can celebrate your engagement in sumptuous surroundings, making the most of the roll top bath and delicious welcome hamper. Raise a glass to each other on the private deck with views over Loch Awe and start planning your big day, or stay happily in the present moment and head out for more adventures together with a round of golf, a mountain bike excursion, fishing or kayaking trip
