At Canopy & Stars, we define remote cabins as places deliberately tucked away from roads, crowds and everyday noise, often reached by footpaths, farm tracks or winding country lanes. Many are completely off grid, where phone notifications fall silent and the only schedule is sunrise and sunset.

But that doesn’t mean roughing it. Our off grid stays balance comfort with quiet, using solar power, gas cooking and thoughtful design to provide lighting, hot showers and places to charge the essentials. If you’re craving a proper reset, these remote cabins range from wild lakeside hideaways to woodland cabins deep in the trees and offer a restorative way to step out of everyday life and leave normal behind for a while.

1. Hinterlandes Cabin, Cumbria

Cabin type: Off-grid valley cabin
Remote rating: Quiet Lake District isolation
Nearest public transport: Maryport Station + 26-min taxi

Hidden in the secluded Lorton Valley, Hinterlandes Cabin sits deep in Cumbrian wilderness where distractions quickly fade and the landscape takes over. Full directions are provided before you set off, but once you arrive it feels wonderfully cut off in the best possible way.

The Lake District is your back garden playground, with hill trails, wild swimming in mountain streams and abundant wildlife nearby. Designed with a light footprint in mind, it keeps things simple but comfortable, including a warm shower, hot tub and compost toilet. Sitting on the deck by the firepit, surrounded by woodland and big skies, you’ll feel like the only people on earth.

One of our guests, Jamie said: “Going off-grid for a week was really freeing and relaxing. The facilities in the cabin and the little extras thrown in were brilliant as well. I hiked around and saw loads without having to use the car, and then you can really chill out and decompress back at the cabin. I even managed to get quite a bit of writing done. A wonderful break all round!”

2. Otby Lake Boat House, Lincolnshire

Type: Lakeside eco cabin
Remote rating: Rural isolation
Nearest public transport: Market Rasen station + 12-min taxi

Perched on the edge of a six-acre, stream-fed lake, Otby Lake Boat House is the ultimate rural escape, where wild space stretches in every direction. Whether you’re floating across the water in your own private rowing boat or sweating out the stress in the wood-fired sauna, you’ll find plenty of ways to relax.

Inside, solar lighting and thick insulation make it both eco-friendly and toasty warm, and the lack of wifi ensures a truly off-grid experience. You’ll feel blissfully removed from daily distractions as you explore the Lincolnshire Wolds, cosy up with a book, stretch out on the yoga mats, or cast a line for trout in the lake (just remember to bring your gear). It’s nature therapy at its finest.

One of our guests, Sophy said: “We were able to truly relax at this stunning off-grid property. Lovely decor, perfect big comfy bed and very well equipped. The welcome pack was a lovely touch and we loved the sauna and rowing boat. We did the recommended walk to the king's head pub and had a great meal there. Perfect.”

3. The Withywindle, Devon

Type: Meadow hideaway cabin
Remote rating: Quiet countryside retreat
Nearest transport: Crediton Station + 19-min taxi

The owners of The Withywindle are living the rural dream after fleeing busy city streets for the Devon countryside. Feel inspired by the simple life during your stay, in this stunning off-grid cabin hidden in a meadow, surrounded by trees. Clad in a mixture of beautiful cedar shingle and rusty tin, The Withywindle has been cleverly designed to change colour and blend into the natural setting as it ages.

With a huge Swedish bath steaming on the deck, a double hammock and an outdoor pizza oven, you’ve got everything you need for deep relaxation and there’s no one around to disturb the peace. Stargazing by the firepit with a local cider at night will reset your system to seriously mellow.

One of our guests, Charlotte said: “The Withywindle was a perfect spot for our anniversary away. It was exactly as pictured, a really cosy stay and a wonderful hamper left by the hosts. We would 100% recommend it for an unplugged, cosy weekend reading and playing games.”

4. The Heron, Dorset

Type: Off-grid tiny barn
Remote rating: Secluded working farm
Nearest public transport: Gillingham Station + 20-min taxi. There is also a bus stop from Gillingham train station to Sturminster + 10-20 min walk on foot to the cabin.

Bring the kids to this ‘tiny barn’ in Dorset and let them burn off some energy running riot in the fun hayloft. Unplug your devices and settle in for some quality time reconnecting with nature on a 240-acre working dairy farm. The 10-minute walk from the car park to the cabin gets you in the mood for seclusion, but you can borrow a wheelbarrow or grab a lift if there’s too much to carry.

The beautiful River Stour runs through the farm where you can try your hand at fishing and kayaking, or you can access local footpaths with a 10-minute stroll. With exciting activities like hot air ballooning, quad biking and archery on the doorstep there’s no time to look at your phone anyway.

One of our guests, Lynsey said: “We had a fabulous family holiday. The outdoor bath, lack of wifi and tech was much needed. Loved the privacy that the heron gave us.”

5. The Lake, Cornwall

Type: Lakeside container cabin
Remote rating: Moorland solitude
Nearest public transport: Bodmin Parkway station +15 min taxi. The owners can also arrange collecting guests from Bodmin Parkway upon booking.

Hidden deep in the rugged expanse of Bodmin Moor, The Lake is a haven of solitude. Your off-grid retreat is a transformed shipping container, its minimalist design framing an ever-changing view of the flooded quarry below.

Owners Rupert and Fran welcome you on arrival, but once they leave, it’s just you, the lake, and the wilderness. Use the rod provided for fishing off the pier, or wild swim in the lake before warming up in the gas-powered outdoor shower. Even the fridge is wild, a simple crate submerged in the cool shallows, keeping your drinks perfectly chilled for a sundowner. As night falls, the magic of Bodmin’s Dark Sky status takes over, and the heavens explode with stars.

One of our guests, Anil said: “Absolutely stunning location. Perfect to get away and live the simple life. Love! Rupert and Fran were the perfect hosts, and it was lovely meeting them. I just hope this place stays a secret!”

Remote rating: Open countryside escape
Nearest transport: Crediton Station + 15-minute taxi

For adventure, head to Dartmoor for climbing or kayak the Exe. But with sunsets over rolling hills and a pizza oven at your doorstep, you may never want to leave.

One of our guests, Tia said:Big Sky Retreat was a gorgeous location, with plenty of space and a lovely view. We didn't even realize we had neighbours and felt completely alone. This is the perfect place to enjoy the peace and quiet of the countryside without the distractions of people or electronics.”

Type: Handmade rural cabin
Remote rating: Quiet countryside
Nearest transport: Ludlow station + 5-minute taxi or 20-minute walk to The Bivvy. The owners can pick up guests at no extra cost but has to be prearranged.

Simplicity itself in the quiet Shropshire countryside, The Bivvy is a lovingly handcrafted cabin filled with creativity. Built from salvaged materials found on the family farm, it’s a space that invites you to slow down and reconnect with nature. Entertainment is delightfully analogue – a deck of cards, a guitar, books, and a football to kick about.

With the famous Bringewood biking trails close by, the River Wye for canoeing, and Mortimer’s Forest offering long, meditative walks, there’s plenty to explore. But you may find that the stillness of The Bivvy is the biggest draw. Split some logs, stoke the fire, and let the peaceful countryside do its thing.

One of our guests, Holly said: “The Bivvy is an amazing place, great location for nearby Ludlow and being in nature. Very easy to get to via public transport but feels remote, and David & Andy have really thought of everything, super attentive hosts! Cannot recommend enough, will definitely be staying again.”
