Dog-friendly cabins in Devon where you can walk to the pub

Hidden away from the rest of the world, Fleur's Retreat is a Scandi-chic pod at the bottom of a steep hill at Sturridge Farm. With no TV or radio, you'll soon relax into a soothing rhythm of picnics by the pond, BBQs and wild swimming. To really immerse yourselves, the hosts welcome guests to get involved in farm life with apple picking, elderflower cordial making or gardening, depending on the time of year. Less than a mile away in nearby Sandford you'll find a dog-friendly pub, The Lamb Inn which boasts an open fire, comfy sofas, courtyard and covered sundeck. The varied menu has plenty of vegan and vegetarian options as well as locally sourced ales and 'proper' coffees.

Hill Cross Hide is a sustainably built cabin on the borders of Devon and Dorset with a huge deck overlooking serene meadows and woodland. Hit the nearby dog-friendly beaches, explore the beautiful Jurassic Coast and stop off at the lively seaside towns of Lyme Regis and Bridport. A couple of miles away in Stockland, The King's Arms is open seven days a week and welcomes dogs as warmly as their owners. It's the hub of the community so you'll feel like a proper local as you tuck into delicious home-cooked food in a buzzy atmosphere. If you're lucky, your visit might coincide with one of the pub's regular music nights. The walk home is uphill, so you're guaranteed to sleep like a dog once your head hits the pillow.

The Withywindle somehow manages to combine storybook magic with effortlessly cool style in one stunning off-grid retreat. Clad in cedar shingle (which smells incredible) with a curved rusty tin roof and quirky little shuttered windows, the cabin merges effortlessly with its natural surroundings. Once you've drunk in the gorgeous views, hop into the large Swedish wood-fired tub on the deck and unwind with a G&T while your pup explores his glamping pad. The nearby dog-friendly Ring of Bells pub in Cheriton Fitzpaine village has a lovely beer garden and a delicious menu with some mouth-watering desserts.

On an idyllic smallholding, surrounded by (you guessed it) sheep and next to a babbling brook, The Sheep Shack is a cosy bolthole at the bottom of a beautiful valley. Curl up with a book on the veranda in blissful seclusion, chat for hours in front of the fire pit and explore south Devon's rugged beaches. As far as local pubs go, we've upped the ante with this one. Iconic, luxurious Gara Rock Hotel is 15 minutes' walk away and is about as dog-friendly as it gets. Tails will be wagging and mouths watering if you manage to bag a table in the popular restaurant (dogs are welcome in both the lounge bar and the restaurant). If you're less of a forward planner, the hotel usually has a food truck outside in high season.
