Escape the city for the countryside, and swap reality for a starring role in your favourite film or TV show. The UK’s historic castles, atmospheric coves and rugged mountains have provided the backdrop for many iconic screen moments from Bridgerton and Sex Education, to Star Wars and Harry Potter. Anyone can wander around these living, breathing sets, but you’ll need to provide your own costumes (and lightsabers) if you want the full immersive experience. Stay nearby in a cosy cabin and after the exhilaration of seeing spectacular filming locations up close, you can cuddle up by the wood burner to rewatch your favourite film or TV show, and spot the places you’ve just visited.
The wild, majestic landscape of Northumberland lends itself to epic adventures whether you’re exploring the rugged coastline, or embarking on a wizarding adventure. A fifteen-minute drive from Bilton Lookout, is atmospheric Alnwick Castle which had a starring role as Hogwarts in the first two Harry Potter films. Pack your broomstick and head to The Outer Bailey where Harry and his school friends first learned to fly.
After a busy day battling the Dark Lord, grab a drink (Butterbeer is optional) and kick back on the deck at the cabin. The hot tub has sweeping views over the fields and out to the North Sea. There’s a stargazing window above the bed and a remote control blind to let in the morning sun. On Bilton Barns working farm the only sounds to break the peace are birdsong and cows mooing in the distance, but you’re still pleasingly close to the Northumberland Coast Path and the seaside village of Alnmouth.
Most Sex Education fans lust over Jean’s (aka Gillian Anderson’s) house as much as Otis lusts after Maeve. The instantly-recognisable Chalet at Symonds Yat East, is a Norwegian former fishing lodge with spectacular views over the Wye gorge. It also happens to be a mere ten-minute stroll from Watson’s Cabin which has equally beautiful views over the same river.
The cabin is in an idyllic hilltop setting with a large terraced garden. Soak in the hot tub, BBQ on the deck and sip sundowners as night falls and the fairy lights cast their magic spell. If you want to set a frisky mood, stick on the Sex Education soundtrack. Beyond the gate, there are endless outdoor adventures to be had from canoeing on the Wye, hiking in the hills and freewheeling down Herefordshire country lanes on bikes, Eric and Otis-style
Tighten your corset, pull on your velvet tailcoat and live out your best Bridgerton life at The Straw Bale Lodge. It’s a fifteen-minute drive to the grandeur of beautiful Bath, home to many filming locations including No.1 Royal Crescent – residence of the Featherington family – and Bath Street with its striking line of colonnades. Close your eyes and you can conjure up an appealing image of The Duke riding his horse along the cobblestones.
Straw Bale Lodge perched on Solsbury Hill is the perfect sanctuary at the end of a busy day’s sightseeing and a safe distance from the ‘Ton’ gossip of Lady Whistledown. It has a meltingly warm hot tub with panoramic views over Bath. In this area of Outstanding Natural Beauty you can walk straight out of the front door to the famous skyline circular walk, and drink in the gorgeous vistas of the city and surrounding countryside.
Just like Game of Thrones, House of Dragons is known for its spectacular filming locations. Even if you’re not a fantasy superfan, you’ll be captivated by this dramatic stretch of coastline with smugglers coves and secluded beaches. Kynance Cove is one of the most Instagrammable beaches in Cornwall, and its white sands and turquoise waters featured as the backdrop to the Valyrian Camp in the series.
The Cabin at Halzephron House has front row seats to all the action with sea views, a secret cliffside garden, and a path down to the dog-friendly beach below. If you’re partial to a bit of role play, act out dramatic duels in your very own open-air cliffside amphitheatre with St. Michael's Mount (another House of Dragons filming location) as the backdrop in the distance.
Stock up on Cornettos and head to the tiny city of Wells, the setting of Simon Pegg’s buddy-cop parody, Hot Fuzz. The picturesque streets of Wells became the fictional village of Sandford and in this intimate location it’s easy to play filming location bingo as you tick off Market Place, The Swan Hotel and other backdrops to comedy shoot-outs and chases.
Stay an eight-minute drive away at Vilberie, a tranquil spot set up for luxurious afternoon movie marathons. In a separate circular room there’s a huge granite bath, plus Bluetooth speakers and a movie screen so you can lounge in the tub and belly laugh at Hot Fuzz on repeat. When you’re ready to stretch your legs, take a stroll through the arboretum, head out into the beautiful Mendip Hills or just walk to the end of the lane for a slap-up meal at The Pheasant Inn. If you’re feeling thirsty, take a deliberate wrong turn and end up in the nearby vineyard…
The force is strong at Helvellyn Hut in the Lake District National Park, a magical spot in the heart of the wild with spectacular mountain views. With huge windows, no light pollution and a Japanese spa bath on the deck, you might catch a glimpse of an intergalactic spaceship or two whizzing through the dark skies overhead. Or it might just be a shooting star.
This beautiful spot is close to Derwentwater and Thirlmere, two of the most recognisable Star Wars filming locations in Cumbria. Derwentwater was used in Star Wars: The Force Awakens as The Millenium Falcon flies into the planet of Takodana. Once you’ve had your fix of Jedis and Stormtroopers, head out into the fells to conquer Helvellyn or Scafell Pike, take a cruise on Lake Windermere or browse the market stalls of pretty Keswick.
