Best glamping places for digital nomads

The pandemic changed our work habits forever, with more opportunities to work remotely. If you don’t need to be in the office for your job, there’s no reason why home has to be your only work space. Digital nomads spend time travelling and working simultaneously – getting the 9-5 done in exciting locations that they can explore as soon as they shut the laptop. If you’re lacking annual leave left, but fancy a few days, a week (or more) away from the normal routine, take a look at some of our best glamping spaces for digital nomads. They all have great wifi, a table to work at and a smorgasbord of outdoor adventures on the doorstep for the ultimate in work-life balance.

The Dugout, Herefordshire

If you’re a creative type, this turf-roofed roundhouse in Herefordshire is guaranteed to spark inspiration. Set yourself up at the table by the window for regular meditative moments drinking in the breathtaking views of the rolling hills. On every coffee break (and you might take a few more than usual), wander over to visit the farm animals or stroll along one of the walking trails that lead from the front door. If your inbox gets too much, unplug with a mellow lunchtime soak in the ‘library’ bath tub surrounded by books.

Once work’s done the fun can really begin. Owners Ed and Rowena offer woodworking workshops, there’s cycling and walking in The Forest of Dean, canoeing along the Wye and wild swimming in the River Monnow. For a slap up meal, walk two miles by footpath to Michelin star pub, The Kilpeck Inn, which serves local and seasonal food.

The Chickenshed, Monmouthshire

Bring a colleague, or seven, to The Chickenshed in Monmouthshire for a coworking getaway. Or arrange a ‘tag team’ working break with your partner and the kids during the school holidays. Sleeping eight, there’s plenty of space to work from the large dining table, or the outdoor table for a change of scenery in warmer months. With a sleek modern interior, high ceilings, underfloor heating and three bathrooms, it’s the dream office you’d design at home if you had the space.

There are no views over industrial parks here, instead its undulating Monmouthshire countryside with glimpses of Sugar Loaf in the distance. Reward yourself for a hard day’s graft with an alfresco meal on the terrace with food supplied from The Marches Deli in Monmouth, or ask local caterer Penny Johnstone to deliver a meal. Shake off any lingering desk fatigue with walks in the woods and hikes along Offa’s Dyke trail.

The Straw Bale Lodge, Bath

The Georgian splendour of Bath is on the doorstep, but The Straw Bale Lodge feels far removed from urban hustle and bustle. It’s perched at the top of famous Solsbury Hill on the Bath skyline route with panoramic views over the countryside. Digital nomads can work at the cosy table near the wood burner then stride out to explore the wildflower meadows, woodland and farmland on an extended lunch break.

Once you’ve logged off for the day, it’s a 15-minute drive into Bath for a meal out or a mooch round the independent boutiques. Or you might prefer to spend leisurely evenings admiring the rolling hills from the hot tub and stargazing from the deckchairs on the terrace next to the chimenea. For a treat at the end of a productive working week, the UK’s only natural thermal spa, Thermae Bath Spa, is conveniently located in the centre of the city.

After work drinks can be chosen from the complementary gin bar and enjoyed on the balcony overlooking the estuary, then it's an easy walk to The Crabshell Inn for dinner, or to Wild Artichokes for one of their epic feasting evenings.

The boathouse is a treasure trove of sailing memorabilia, decorated in dark teals, wood and brass with a gorgeous mahogany kitchen island and a cosy window seat. For a day out, head to seaside-chic Salcombe, Burgh Island or beautiful Bantham beach.
