Overview
Bruadar means ‘a dream’ in Gaelic, and this place isn’t far off being a dream. Set upon a gentle incline in a beautiful Scottish glen, the surroundings are nothing short of spectacular. To one side there’s the Cairngorms on the horizon, behind the cabin there’s tall pine woodland while in front of it there’s a river meandering through the bottom of the glen – which you can take a bracing wild swim in. This space is for the adventurous of heart, completely off-grid, drawing its electricity from the solar panels on site, and its water straight from the hillside. With the Cairngorms just 10 miles away, Bruadar is perfectly placed for a long hike to the foothills, or a quick drive to then venture upwards to the lofty mountain heights. With long-lasting snow patches, and tundra-like flora, the Cairngorms are frequented by skiers, rock and ice climbers as well as hill walkers. And if you’re brave enough for any of the above, you’ll enjoy coming back to relax on the cobbled area outside the hut, with two chairs fashioned from whisky barrels, taking in the sights and sounds of the glen, and enjoy a glass of something - maybe even the water of life itself. If a frisky naked gallop down to the river is a touch too wild for your bathing tastes, the cabin has a gas supply which not only powers the indoor rainfall shower, but the two-ring gas hob. There’s also a small tabletop electric oven. If looking to eat heartily it’s best to be prepared as the nearest shops are a good 24 minutes away by car!
Owners Clare and Alec, who were married by the river at the foot of the hill, built the cabin during the initial stages of the pandemic after years of dreaming about it. Though the land itself has been in Alec’s family for 50 years, and the views are as primordial as ever, the local activities are becoming a touch more contemporary, with kayaking and paddleboarding available about a mile away at the Backwater Reservoir. It’s half a mile to the nearest building, and mobile signal can be patchy, but this is an ideal contender for those looking for a real escape!

Meet Clare and Alec
Clare and Alec have a shared love of campervanning, tiny houses and off-grid sustainable living and, over the last 17 or so years, Alec has fitted out several campervans as well as a narrowboat which was his home for a number of years. They are inspired by living well in small spaces, being connected to nature, the landscape and the environment without compromising on comfort or style, and have brought all of this passion and experience to their latest venture - a lovingly hand-crafted shepherd's hut in the hills of Glenisla where they both grew up. Despite having spent their childhoods in this most idyllic of surroundings, they both left the area and lived and worked across Scotland for around two decades, before meeting up again by sheer coincidence (or maybe fate!) when they parked up next to each other at a festival in Ullapool in the north-west of Scotland. Four years later they got married in the field by the river at the foot of the hill where the shepherd's hut is located. Building an off-grid space in this stunning location had been a dream of theirs for a long time, and, during the coronavirus pandemic lockdowns, finally became a reality. Alec was furloughed from his work in a nearby whisky distillery and much of Clare's event photography work had stopped. They had no other project builds at the time (Alec usually has something on the go!) and decided to go for it, with the hut finally being completed and ready to welcome guests on Hogmanay 2021. It was a dream come true and the hut was duly christened Bruadar, which is one of the Scottish Gaelic words for a dream or dreaming.
Wildlife & the environment
Bruadar is located on a hillside in Glenisla, the most westerly of the Angus glens, on the eastern edges of Perthshire in the heart of Scotland and just north of the 500-million-year-old Highland Boundary Fault - the great geological feature that divides the Scottish Highlands from the Lowlands. It is situated on a piece of land that is around 60 acres in size that has been in Alec's family for around half a century, with the only other property on the land being a historic stone cottage which is also run by Alec and Clare. In terms of wildlife and flora and fauna, the area is a wonderfully unspoilt biodiverse space, with deer, foxes, badgers, red squirrels, numerous types of birds including red kites, at least one woodpecker and an owl, and probably much more that they have yet to spot!

Beautiful shepherds hut in stunning remote location of Glen Isla. Spent a couple of, rather stormy, cosy winter nights here enjoying the fire - plentiful wood supplies, and the starry skies. The home comforts of rain shower and fully equipped kitchen were wonderful. Thanks for a great stay!

What an amazing little cabin!! I loved my stay here!
21/08/2024Oxana
Wonderful location and the accommodation itself was brilliantly appointed with everything you could possibly need.

We have stayed in a few shepherd's huts and this one is by far the best. Clare and Alex have thought of everything and you can see the love that they put into it. Location is spectacular so beautiful and peaceful. We will definitely be back
02/08/2024Evelyn
My partner and I had the most magical stay at Bruadar. Alec and Clare went above and beyond to make our trip accessible, information, and everything we dreamed, hoped and wanted for a celebratory weekend away in the beautiful remote countryside. Their hosting is second to none, as is the impeccable craftmanship of the shepherd's hut and the location within it is set. It is one of the best glamping experiences I've had - adding comfort to an off-grid experience.
12/07/2024Joy
A great stay in a beautiful location, the accommodation has been very well thought out to make the most of the space.
23/05/2024Anthony
A truly perfect off-grid experience and the epitome of indoor outdoor living. I now feel rather claustrophobic in “normal” accommodation. The knowledge that everything you do is solar or gas powered is amazing, and the view across the valley never tires. I spotted something new every day. I explored some of the Cateran trail but to be honest, sitting outside with a coffee was so nice i didn't explore too far! I was very lucky with the weather with only one rainy day, otherwise it was simply glorious and topped off with a swim in the river. My dog loved sitting outside and watching the wildlife (and listening - the birdsong here is just beautiful).
12/05/2024Alice
A lovely weekend in splendid isolation close to the wildland and beaver project at Bamff
27/04/2024Laura
We booked a beautiful shepherds hut and you may say luxury for a hut is not luxury but we have stayed in 5 shepherds huts over the years and this was by far the best and luxury for us. Not just the scenery but a lovely warm shower and immaculate kitchen and bathroom. The hut was by far the best for good insulation and we didn't have to put the fire on first thing.
30/12/2023Melanie
Had a great time staying here with our two dogs, the peace and quiet was so relaxing. The hut was extremely cosy and so well equipped with everything that we needed. Would definitely return!
13/11/2023Laura
A beautiful peaceful place to stay. The accommodation although small was wonderfully thought through. Excellent service from the owners both in preparing the emaculately clean hut but also responding to questions during our stay. Amazing

Amazing place, full of Bea memories. 5* from us in terms of accommodation, and equipment. Lovely to try to live different lifestyle as we use to in busy city. Always wanted to be more close with the nature and this place was made for it. We really enjoyed every moment, rain , sunshine, wind , all of that in one day and the sound of wildlife. We had a great time at Bruadar, in spite of the rain, we had lovely view of the hills and river Isla. The hut itself is gorgeous, with so many little touches that just makes it extra special. The log fire kept a nice cosy temperature and the bed is very comfy. Would love to return when it's a bit warmer and try out the hammock! All in all a great wee getaway :)
21/03/2023Julie
We had such a fabulous time at Bruadar! Our hosts, Claire and Alec, were so kind and helpful throughout. The location was beautifully remote, surrounded by wildlife and hills - no need for a meditation app when you’re falling asleep to the sound of the wind in the trees! The accommodation was wonderful too, with an incredibly comfy bed and everything you need for a snug romantic getaway. Overall, it was the perfect place to celebrate our engagement :)

This was a last minute booking to get some peace and quiet with my dog. It was an awesome location, even had a dip in the river. But had everything I needed

We had the most relaxing, away from the reality of the world today stay at Bruadar. We wanted some serious down time as we have our own business and Bruadar delivered. The shepards hut was amazingly equipped and you could see the hosts considered every detail of their guests needs.

If you want a break that gets you off grid, enables you to switch off from your day to day stresses and just surround yourself in breath-taking views of the beautiful Scottish wilds.... this is the place for you. After leaving the car and strolling for 10 minutes uphill along a path, I was not disappointed! This was a stay that felt like a real adventure and had me tying up my hiking boots to explore the local countryside and untying them for a bracing paddle in the river before warming my toes by the woodburner.

My partner and I had the most refreshing and relaxing stay at Bruadar, a true hidden gem nestled in nature. From the moment we arrived, we felt completely at peace—surrounded by serene woodlands, fresh air, and the gentle sounds of the countryside. The cabin itself was cozy, beautifully designed, and well-equipped with everything we needed for a comfortable stay. Whether we were unwinding by the fire, enjoying a quiet morning coffee on the deck, or simply soaking in the tranquility, every moment felt special. What really set Bruadar apart was the sense of seclusion and connection to nature—it was the perfect place to slow down, reset, and truly unwind. If you're looking for an escape from the hustle and bustle, this retreat is a great option.

We had a really lovely time. The scenery was inspiring and the hut was well-thought out in terms of what we might need, and making the most of the space.
