Overview
This is a place of incredible peace. Your only neighbours are sheep and you have the views of the dale all to yourself from your home by the stream. The Shepherd’s hut is a homely space that serves as your bedroom with a cosy wood-burning stove and gas hob for your morning coffee, but you’ll mostly be living outdoors. If you’re not soaking in the hot tub and marvelling at the area’s dark skies, you’ll be sitting by the fire bowl or cooking over the open fire. It’s a few steps outdoors to the compost loo as well, there’s a basic-but-fun shower and you have running water for washing up. Shepherd’s Rest is run on solar power, so lighting is minimal, leaving the stars bright and letting you clear your head of tech for a few lovely outdoor days. With the option of buying a welcome hamper of local meat, home-baked bread and freshly-laid eggs from the farm to tuck into, as well as the little shop on site selling Jill's ready made meals and a few essentials, people have been known to check in and stay put for their whole stay. If you do fancy a little excursion though, there’s plenty to see and do.
The Yorkshire Cycle Hub is just round the corner, so you can hire bikes and explore the moors, if your thighs are up to it. There are hikes right from the door, including a couple of owner Jill’s favourites to Graze on the Green tea rooms in Rosedale or over the hills to the Fox and Hounds at Ainsthorpe. They’re good distances, but well worth it for the views, the food and some well-earned hot tubbing. If you’re craving the sea, then Whitby’s fish & chip shops and goth community aren’t far off and you can take in some of the coastal path before you stop for lunch. But the temptation, which you should definitely give in to, is to ditch the car and spend a few days doing nothing more than idle wandering and lazing by the stream.

It was magical. Perfect location, only a 2 hour drive from our home. Hot tub hot and ready for when we arrived. So remote and such a great way to disconnect. No phone signal or electricity sockets. Great for walking and a lovely pub nearby. The family who ran the farm and shepherd's huts were so warm and friendly.

Lovely little hut for the most relaxing birthday get away. Fab skies viewed from a hot tub
23/02/2025Katie
We had a wonderful stay over New Year at Shepherds Rest. The cabin is really comfortable and the wood burner makes it super cosy even on very cold nights. The hot tub is great for stargazing. Jill and family were extremely helpful in keeping us stocked up with wood and checking we were all good. There are lots of walks nearby and the local pubs are brilliant. Looking forward to staying again soon!

Well….what can I say other than we had a fabulous time. We thoroughly enjoyed everything, taking in the incredible views, walking on the moors, relaxing in the hot tub, relaxing in the hut with the fire on just reading the paper and playing games. There is no phone signal here so get used to it, along with the stamina using the wheelbarrow to wheel your bags back to the car. Last night was very stormy and wet but we felt safe and cosy in our hut. We went to Graze on the Green for brekkie, twice and it was so nice. The bed is so beautifully comfortable, and the peace and tranquility of it all makes this so memorable, it will be hard getting back into a work routine. Our host Jill & Partner were just superb who made our stay so special.

We had a fantastic time at Shepherds Rest enjoying the complete seclusion and ‘off grid’ experience offered. The hut was gorgeous and comfortable and the hot tub was an added bonus. The weather was sunny when we arrived and we were warmly greeted by Jill the owner who gave us a lift down to the hut with our bags. The Saturday started dry but we had some torrential rain in the afternoon which didn’t spoil our stay as just cosying up in the hut was a novelty. The little stove ensured it was warm and we had everything we needed.we went for a short walk up the bridle path but hadn’t planned on getting in the car to go anywhere. There are plenty of things to do in the area though, and places to eat if we had wanted to venture out.

Shepherds Rest occupies a quiet spot in it's own field above the stream, all to yourself. First things first were to fire up the hot tub and consider dinner options whilst you wait for water to reach it's optimum soaking temp, best enjoyed with a glass of something in hand. After the sun had dipped, I got the wood-burner going and settled in for the evening, kettle whistling for my bedtime brew. Honestly the most comfortable bed. Thank you to Jill and Andrew for a wonderful stay!

We had the most relaxing stay in the shepherds rest, the location is so beautiful and peaceful and the hut has everything you need. Jill is so helpful and I would definitely recommend the breakfast hamper!
23/02/2024Emma
Amazing stay. Jill was a great host, set the woodburner in the hut going before we got there so it was toasty and then started the woodfire for the hot tub going when we arrived so it was warm when we got back from the pub for tea. Amazing location, great for stargazing and walking, and the hut was a lovely cozy nook for reading at the end of the day. Would 100% recommend and will almost certainly be back.
02/02/2024Jonny
This place is idyllic and tranquil - Jill is an amazing and invigorating host - but equally not interfering - perfect location and vibe to get away from it all
12/01/2024russell
It was so wonderful, thank you for a restful, peaceful few days hidden away from the world! The owners picked us up and dropped us off at the station and gave lots of wonderful recommendations. We spent time in nature, went on long walks and the hot tub was just amazing!
17/12/2023Freya
What a lovely little get away to start the Christmas season. Unexpected level of snow, the owner Jill reached out and offered us to rearrange if we didn’t feel comfortable driving in the snow. Luckily the roads were clear we made it. Beautiful location out the way perfect to unwind. Plenty of wood to keep the fire going. With it been so clod (-8) we never got in hot tub! But was plenty in the hut to keep us entertained with no service was great to get away from social media. We can’t wait to return in the summer the to experience the amazing scenery in the summer.

My girlfriend and I had a fantastic stay at Stonebeck Farm. Our host Jill went above and beyond to make sure we had a the most comfortable stay possible. The Shepherds rest hut was in such a idilic spot and we would highly recommend Jill’s breakfast hamper! She also had plenty of local recommendations for walks and places to visit during our stay. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a comfortable off grid escape!
10/11/2023Fred
We had the best stay at Keepers Watch. The hut was perfect! Every detail had been thought of, equipped with everything you could need and very cute and cosy interior. The bed was SO comfy and warm! The hut was plenty warm enough even with the snowy weather outside. The hosts are so kind and helpful, really make you welcome during your stay. The location is stunning, gorgeous scenery and plenty to see and do. Can’t recommend enough, would love to return!

We had a lovely peaceful break at Shepherds rest.

The perfect getaway under the stars. A perfect remote location for an escape from bright lights and technology! Jill and Andrew's home made breakfast hamper is a MUST.
25/08/2023Sarah
We had a wonderful two nights at the Shepherd’s Rest- perfect to be off-grid and a wonderful little hut with all that we needed.
23/08/2023Suzy
A lovely stay at Shepherds Rest, would recommend to anyone who wants a weekend away from any technology!! It was so nice to have no signal to switch off from the outside world for a couple nights. The owner (Jill) was so lovely and accommodating. A clean and welcoming hut with a lovely wood fired hot tub. Facilities for minimal but for 2/3 nights it's absolutely fine! :) If you're debating booking, just do it!! :)
28/07/2023Abbie
What an amazing location and fabulous little hut. It had everything you could possibly need for a romantic, secluded or remote getaway. We absolutely loved it and was blessed with the best weather, which meant a lovely walk up the beacon and surrounding area was a must. But just the beautiful sounds of the running spring and birds will set you into a relaxation whilst dipping into the woodstove hot tub. The hosts, the location, the hut... Everything was amazing.
26/05/2023Susan
I’d like to extend a huge thanks to Jill and her sons for making our stay exceptional. The Shepherds Hut is in a very private location on the farm, it feels like there’s nobody around for miles. It was clean and well stocked, and the views of the moors are brilliant. We struggled to get the hot tub working and Jill went out of her way to help by getting it going whilst we were out and about, ready for our return. All in all I couldn’t recommend this place enough - will definitely be back!
12/05/2023Nicholas
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Shepherd's rest. It was quiet and peaceful, which was exactly what we were looking for. It's close to Danby and Danby castle and there are plenty of walks to do in the local area. Jill and her family are lovely. They were very accommodating and friendly, bringing us afternoon tea and offering extra firewood when needed.
05/05/2023Ryan
The Shepherds Rest was a glorious break in nature, we very much enjoyed having some time without phone signal with the lovely sheep around us! The hot tub was fabulous and the facilities provided were everything we needed. We were even helped out by the family when our car got stuck!
28/04/2023Joy
Despite the weather being appalling the location and facilities were perfect
05/04/2023Paul
Loved every minute of our stay wasn't long enough peaceful and quiet was so relaxing
19/03/2023Amanda
We had a lovely stay at Shepherds Rest. It was a cold, rainy and blustery weekend but we spent it cosied up by the log burner and lounging in the hot tub watching the amazing stars!
04/11/2022Harriet
Lovely, tranquil stay at this beautiful place ! We very much hope to return. Jill and her family made us feel very welcome but also gave us our much-needed space and switch-off from the world. The hut is spacious and cosy and the wood-fired bath is divine as is the wraparound veranda for admiring the view.
15/08/2022Rebecca
Nice quiet stay in a lovely part of the North Yorkshire Moors. The owners were very friendly and made checking in and out easy. The shepherds hut was clean and well equipped for a short stay with a nice little welcome hamper on arrival. Had a day trip to Whitby then relaxed at night in the hot tub and by the fire with a few cold beers looking at the stars and listening to the owls.
05/08/2022Dave
Perfect peace getaway. The shepherds hut is perfectly furnished and the host (Jill) was very approachable and friendly. The setting is beautiful and the fact there is no phone signal was the downtime we both needed. We completed a few walks in the surrounding area which has brilliant scenery and a visit to the Danby Moors centre is recommended. Interesting visitor centre with a great cafe and a fab place to refuel after our 9 mile walk.
08/07/2022Sara
Pile your stuff into the wheelbarrow and set off across the field to your very pretty little cabin. The views are stunning up onto the fells and hillside, behind you are mature trees and a gurgling stream, curlews cry, lapwings hurtle about.
27/05/2022Nic
We stayed in the Shepherds Rest hut on Stonebeck Gate Farm. It was a perfect, relaxing stay and an escape from daily life. Perfect secluded setting, gorgeous attention to detail in the cabin and wonderful log fired hot tub outside. Would definitely recommend to anyone who wants a relaxing stay in the Moors.
25/04/2022Harry
We loved every minute of our stay. We arrived in the evening but Jill gave instructions about what to do on our arrival. There was plenty of wood to get a fire going and heat up the hot tub. The additional breakfast hamper we ordered was delivered in the morning and was delicious. Jill was really welcoming and happy to help. Her son dropped off more wood after we asked about it. Beautiful setting and we were lucky to have beautiful weather. The hot tub and a walk over the moor to the pub was all we needed.
18/03/2022Ailidh
We had a really lovely stay at shepherds rest, it completely exceeded expectations. The break away from city life and technology was just what we needed and the hut itself was so cozy and relaxing with lovely views. The host Jill and her son were very nice and helpful, as we arrived late and it was dark, her son gave us a ride down to the hut and helped us with directions to the nearest pub to get dinner. I didnt want the experience to end!
05/03/2022Sophie
Utterly blissful!!! 2 nights away just my husband and I disconnected from phones, laptops, children, work and the world beyond.
01/03/2022Kendra
Owners more than helpful and friendly the accommodation was fantastic and location stunning. Would definitely recommend and also stay again 5*
25/02/2022Hayley
The most amazing 2 nights in this gorgeous Shepard’s hut on a working farm in the middle of the country. Surrounded by woodland and little stream. Total relaxation and peace!
01/12/2021Natalie
From the moment we entered the front gate to the very welcome and necessary man-powered assistance we got on our departure in the car due to the snow and ice, our stay couldn't have been any better. What a lovely little lodge, and what a fantastic family who run it. A great escape with everything you need in a neat and tidy package. Great little shepherd's hut, with the hot tub outside a fantastic added luxury. Nice 40min walk over the moor to a great pub, or a few hundred yards to a good little cafe/cycle hub. It was ideal for our needs. We've never experienced friendlier hosts. From all the young lads who are a credit to their parents, to the little dogs and the horses... The whole experience was great.
27/11/2021Keith
Lovely dark skies location and friendly owners. The seclusion was perfect for a restful getaway and even transferring our luggage to the cabin was a bit of fun.
15/11/2021Dale
We couldn’t have loved this holiday more. The farm was situated in the most beautiful and remote place in the middle of the North York Moor national park it was honestly breathtakingly beautiful. Jill and Andrew the hosts were the most welcoming and kind hosts and made themselves very approachable for either advice or more fire wood. I loved every second of this holiday and the lack of mobile signal made it the perfect place to escape London and stresses of work.
02/11/2021Alice
Lovely secluded little hut in Whitby. We loved how quiet it was! Everything you needed was included at the hut. We loved the little fire place inside the cabin and also the gas burner and Kettle! The bed was comfy with plenty of pillows and space. Really toasty warm. We loved seeing all the wildlife running about in the field and the gorgeous views.
28/10/2021Sophia
The place itself was lovely. The shower was quite daunting and the hot tub took some attempts at heating up, and the condensation dripping on the fire made it 10x harder, which we gave up in the end. The shepherds hut though was amazing. Couldnt knock that at all. Would go back again in the summer. Jill and her family were spot on and when we had a light trip with the battery, her sons were there in 5 minutes to resolve it.
22/10/2021A
Absolutely fabulous stay at this gorgeous and quirky little cabin. I bought this for my partner for his birthday and he loved it! The hot tub was a particular highlight despite the weather! The hosts were amazing and nothing was too much trouble, such lovely people! Will definitely be going back.
29/09/2021Abigail
We loved it! The area was so peaceful and the hut was really a home away from home. Jill, the owner, was super accommodating and even dropped off some delicious cake for us on the first day. The views from the hot tub were amazing and the whole area was perfect.
19/09/2021Amy
Lovely stay, very peaceful and the owner was really friendly
17/09/2021Jo
we had such a lovely weekend here! We loved the hot tub, the cabin itself was basic but cosy and the bed was so comfortable! Hard to get phone signal but it’s possible with a short walk. The walk over the moors to the local pub is about 2 miles and really pretty (though quite steep). Sheep were in our field the final day and they were so sweet and peaceful to watch. We were given loads of extra firewood when we requested some and having the fire pit and hot tub going at the same time was magical. Theres so little light pollution we could see thousands of stars. There’s also a stream near the hut which is relaxing to listen to. The composting toilet was nicer than most I’ve seen!
10/09/2021Hazel
We had the best time! Jill was so lovely and her newly opened cafe on the farm was fantastic with lots of tastey home made items. The hut was well thoughtout down to the finest details and finishing touches. It is in a remote location so approaching roads are narrow although this is expected in national parks. Parking is at the top of the field and a large wheel barrow is provided for crossing the sheep field to access the hut (we had lots of fun pushing that down the hill). The hut is lovely, with lots of nice finishing touches. It has almost everything you might require with a gas ring, kettle, utensils, cutlery and crockery, BBQ coals, Towels, dressing gowns torches ect. Are provided. Just be aware you are in a hut without electricity and a single tap with hose. I would recommend warm clothing and bottles of drinking water. Quick tip, get a good fi re going for the hot tub on arrival as we only made a little fire and the hot tub then takes a long time to heat. Would highly recommend and would love to stay again!

Our second visit to this lovely spot, fantastic Shepherd’s Hut with wood fired hot tub. Enjoyed another peaceful and relaxing stay.

The Shepard’s Rest was a delight, a perfect getaway and a lovely way to spend our 22nd anniversary. The hut is very off grid and super quaint. The wood fired hot tub was a perfect way to relax after some spectacular hikes. Jill was very helpful and accommodating. We plan on visiting again.

I booked shepherds rest for my boyfriend and I for his birthday. We stayed 2 nights but wish we could’ve stayed more. The owners were absolutely lovely and brought us more wood for the hot tub when we asked for awesome. All of facilities were extremely clean and the views were gorgeous from our hut. Will definitely be coming back again!

Shepherds rest was a magical retreat from the worlds and an opportunity to reconnect. Jill the owner was excellent and so helpful.

We had a wonderful 2 night stay at Shepard’s Rest, we struggled to heat the hot tub the first night (our fault) however having spoke to the owner we spent the majority of the second night in it which was perfect. It was amazing to escape the real world with no noise, no phone signal just the sheep in the near by field.

Fantastic stay, despite the weather, was really comfortable. The shower doesn't run fast outside in the wind, but in fairness this just added to the fun and laughter. The place is really quiet and we were provided with everything we needed. We really liked sharing the field with the Sheep & lambs. When the wind drops and the farm is done for the day, you can close your eyes and hear no traffic which is really rare and a great feature of the place.

Absolutely perfect. So cosy, exactly as it said it would be. Shame about the UK Bank Holiday rain.

We had a beautiful and perfect stay here. All we could hear were the sheep in the nearby field, no road noises or people anywhere to be seen. Enjoyed not having our phones buzzing every 2 mins. Everything was in excellent condition and we were provided everything we could need during our stay. Extremely happy customers

My girlfriend and I had an amazing stay in this beautiful cosy hut last September. The host was so friendly and made sure we had everything we needed. The cabin was warm , the instructions on how to use the hot tub and fire was very clear and simple to do. We stayed for two nights but wish we could have stayed so many more.
29/09/2020Florence
It was really comfortable and we were supplied with everything we needed for our stay. It is a really quiet area with lovely people. Plenty of places to go for a long walk.

We had a very enjoyable stay over the weekend. It was very comfortable and had pretty much all we needed, the hot tub was an added bonus and we did at least get one clear night to watch the stars from it. The fire put was also great and allowed us to toast marshmallows.

We had a wonderful stay at the Shepherd's Rest. Nestled in the heart of the North York Moors, it is a beautiful and incredibly tranquil location. The hut itself has been tastefully decorated, and we really enjoyed the wood fired hot tub!

We had such a lovely stay at Sheperds Rest. Even though it was windy and a bit chilly the hut stayed incredibly warm and the hot tub was fantastic! Our hosts were so kind and caring, always quick to respond to messages and had stocked up the hut with plenty of firewood and all the basic we needed.
28/03/2025Katy
It was magical. Perfect location, only a 2 hour drive from our home. Hot tub hot and ready for when we arrived. So remote and such a great way to disconnect. No phone signal or electricity sockets. Great for walking and a lovely pub nearby. The family who ran the farm and shepherd's huts were so warm and friendly.

Lovely little hut for the most relaxing birthday get away. Fab skies viewed from a hot tub

This place is idyllic and tranquil - Jill is an amazing and invigorating host - but equally not interfering - perfect location and vibe to get away from it all

It was so wonderful, thank you for a restful, peaceful few days hidden away from the world! The owners picked us up and dropped us off at the station and gave lots of wonderful recommendations. We spent time in nature, went on long walks and the hot tub was just amazing!

The perfect getaway under the stars. A perfect remote location for an escape from bright lights and technology! Jill and Andrew's home made breakfast hamper is a MUST.

Despite the weather being appalling the location and facilities were perfect

We had a lovely stay at Shepherds Rest. It was a cold, rainy and blustery weekend but we spent it cosied up by the log burner and lounging in the hot tub watching the amazing stars!
04/11/2022Harriet
Lovely, tranquil stay at this beautiful place ! We very much hope to return. Jill and her family made us feel very welcome but also gave us our much-needed space and switch-off from the world. The hut is spacious and cosy and the wood-fired bath is divine as is the wraparound veranda for admiring the view.

Pile your stuff into the wheelbarrow and set off across the field to your very pretty little cabin. The views are stunning up onto the fells and hillside, behind you are mature trees and a gurgling stream, curlews cry, lapwings hurtle about.

Owners more than helpful and friendly the accommodation was fantastic and location stunning. Would definitely recommend and also stay again 5*

The views from the hot tub were amazing and the whole area was perfect.

we had such a lovely weekend here!
