Overview
Swinburne is a superbly spacious cabin that would have had a traditional shepherd wondering if he can get all the sheep in there with him. The flock are all on the other side of the fence though, so it’s only you that gets to enjoy the stunning space. There’s a lovely hot tub next to the hut and a big three-sided bench seat by the firebowl a few steps away down the flagstone path. Both make wonderful places to sit and watch the incredibly bright stars, while the fire bowl comes with a grill and tools, if you fancy a little outdoor cooking. There’s a more traditional kitchen with hobs and a sink in the hut, along with the big comfy bed, armchairs and the en suite bathroom. You’ll also find seating on the front deck, which makes the perfect place to sit and watch the stream, where you might catch a glimpse of the resident otters.
Swinburne has been designed by Claire, Michael, their son Paul and fiancé Trudie, to help you immerse yourself in nature, not just by sitting and looking, but by setting off and exploring. There are two big trunks for wet and muddy gear, one on the rear deck and another up at the parking spot, which is about 500m away across the fields. These are so you can head off and explore huge Kielder Forest or try the watersports available on the reservoir, then just come back and crash out, happily exhausted. If you’re still not done, then why not head over to Kielder Observatory for one of their nighttime stargazing experiences, or just grab a torch and make the mile long walk to the Barrasford Arms. The local taxi driver will be happy to bring you home again. Then you’ll have a quick stomp back down through the fields to sit in the hot tub, listen out for the badgers and the owls and reflect on a day of wonderful wild adventure.

Meet your hosts
Meet Michael and Clare
Michael and Clare Lishman along with their son Paul and his wife, Trudie live at Fell Lane Farm. The Lishman family have farmed here for over 60 years. It is a 500 acre working farm with 600 breeding sheep, a herd of Pedigree Aberdeen Angus cattle, 100 acres of arable land, half a dozen happy hens (eggs available and included in breakfast box), a horse called Midnight and two working collie dogs!
Michael and Paul work full time on the farm, Clare is a teacher and Trudie runs her own coffee shop - the Riverside Coffee shop, situated 3 miles from the farm, on the Roman Wall pathway at Chollerford. Guests will sample some of her delicious home made sweet treats when they stay in the hut! They were looking to develop a new project on the farm and decided that a shepherds hut would compliment what they were doing as farmers.
They love Northumberland and wanted to share this beautiful part of the country with others. The hut is sited in one of their favourite areas on the farm. Many happy hours were spent there with the children, damming up the stream. It is such a lovely, tranquil spot that they decided to site their hut there so that guests could share the peace, quiet and natural beauty of the location.
Wildlife & Environment
The hut is situated in the corner of a pasture field that provides grazing for around 600 sheep and their lambs, next to a flowing burn (stream). Roe deer graze in the woodland and are often spotted early in the morning. An otter has been seen catching crayfish in the stream. Lots of wild birds live in the area - a heron, ducks, pheasants, partridge to name but a few. Last summer a woodpecker could be heard in the trees nearby. A bird spotting book and binoculars are provided - guests are invited to record all sightings.

This is without doubt one of the best places we have ever stayed. The complete peace and serenity experienced has recharged our batteries completely and we will be returning we feel as many times as we can to be in what has become our favourite place to be together. The family have ensured that every single requirement for you is provided, both in and outside of the Beautiful Shepherds hut. The night time sky was an absolute treat and we were amazed and unable to leave the warmth of the hot tub it was simple perfect. The family were so kind and welcoming and all of the thoughtful little touches were so appreciated. From the raspberry gin to the home bakes, fresh flowers, cosy vibes and handmade soaps. Indeed if you want time alone and the most idyllic surroundings of this enchanting place then we whole heartedly recommend this. The wildlife and beauty of nature that surrounds you here will leave a place in our hearts forever, Thank you for sharing.

We had a lovely time, it was very relaxing. The hut was well equipped and comfortable and the hosts were very helpful. There was plenty to do in the surrounding area if we wanted to go out

Great stay in a new part of the UK for us to celebrate a birthday. Hosts were welcoming, had gone above and beyond with small touches and helpful recommendations. The accommodation itself was really well equipped so you had everything you needed to settle in quickly. Good location amongst several areas of interest, and lots of recommendations required. Ample supply of things like BBQ essentials, logs etc for making the most of the overall experience. Nicely decorated - they had taken time and care to think about every part of the accommodation inside and outside which made all the difference. The outside area particularly of this accommodation was well looked after, had multiple areas to enjoy when the weather was good and allowed you to enjoy the natural surroundings too - I don't quite know how it would work in the winter!

It was amazing from start to finish. Beautiful location, lovely accommodation. Could not fault anything.

A relaxing off grid mid-week break. Fantastic from start to finish. The wood fired hot tub was a dream and the tranquil setting by the babbling burne was beautiful. We were met and transported to the hut by ATV where home made made bread and sloe gin awaited in our Shepherd’s Hut in its own private field. Though it felt remote and isolated, just as we wanted, the farmer was on hand if needed. They even chased off the neighbours cows when they made an unexpected visit. We explored Hadrian’s Wall, observed Dark Skies, explored local towns and sampled local delicacies and brews. Perfect and relaxing

No pictures or words can describe this place, it was totally magical. It was just perfect, far better than we could ever have envisaged. We arrived at the farm slightly late due to traffic issues, the satnav they gave us, took us right to their door. The welcome we received was lovely, explaining about the hut and things to see and do around the area. We then parked our car, put are rucksacks etc in an ATV and was driven across the field to the hut, so much easier than carrying them. The hut itself had everything you need for a relaxing break and the setting is just perfect. The owners had left us fresh bread, milk, water, jam and a treat of raspberry gin. It also had fresh and instant coffee, tea and even hot chocolate with a jar of marshmallows to sprinkle on top. We were given instructions on how to light the hot tub burner and there were definitely more than enough logs for the hot tub, indoor and outdoor wood burners. So lovely not to have to purchase more, the owners said just use what you like. There's everything you need to make your stay special, they explained the fridge was small but showed us the net that goes in the stream to cool your wine and beers, a great touch.

This place was amazing. Private, beautiful, and lots of lambs to watch. It was super clean. I'd probably only stay here if I were driving as public transport seems difficult.

Nestled in the heart of nature, my stay at Swinburne Huts was an unforgettable journey into the wild. Tucked away in a remote location, the huts offered a sanctuary of serenity, far from the distractions of modern life. The soothing sound of the river running past provided a constant melody, lulling me into a state of relaxation. As the sun dipped below the horizon, I indulged in the wood fire hot tub, surrounded by towering trees and the soft glow of starlight above. Cooking under the open sky on the provided BBQ added to the rustic charm of the experience. And for the adventurous spirit, nothing beat the thrill of cold plunging in the refreshing waters of the river, invigorating both body and soul. Each moment spent at Swinburne Huts was a reminder of the beauty and simplicity of life in nature, leaving me rejuvenated and inspired.

Perfect, this shepherd’s hut is a gem. The location is secluded and the night sky from the hot tub is amazing. Nothing is missing from this hut it has everything that you could need. Hot shower, small but functional kitchen and log burner for those cold nights. Exceptionally clean and tidy even outside is beautiful landscaped. Friendly and helpful hosts with lovely welcome gifts.
18/09/2023Sue
If you want a place to go and press your ‘reset’ buttons then this is the place. The positioning of the hut is perfect, you do not see a single person whilst there. The stars at a night were amazing and just listening to the stream and all the nature around was very calming. Inside the hut was spectacularly clean and we were beyond impressed with our experience
08/09/2023Nikola D
Wow if you like remote and on your own no other huts around then this is ideal. The hosts were brilliant and gave you extra touches like food boxes, cakes were fab that were left as a welcome gift, Hot Tub was brilliant and the stay was brilliant.
04/09/2023Tina
We had a long weekend to relax and unwind. Simply beautiful . Idyllic location, impeccable accommodation, stunning facilities and a lovely family running the place. The additional touches of fluffy towel robes, tray bake cakes, damson gin and plenty of wood for the hot tub and fire pit really enhance your visit. By far our favourite Canopy and Stars stay yet and one we would love to return to next year. Highly recommended 5*
11/08/2023Chris
Beautiful accommodation and surroundings, very relaxing and private. The hosts were very welcoming and helpful.
04/08/2023Lisa
it was perfect! The shepherd's hut was in a beautiful, secluded location surrounded by trees, wild flowers, and a stream. The hut was spotless and very comfortable, with nice touches like flowers. Clare had kindly left homemade bread and chocolate brownies and gin for us. There was a hot tub, fire pit and BBQ and everything worked and was easy to use - loads of wood for the fire etc.
28/07/2023Caryl
We had the dreamiest weekend away at the hut. The owners were so lovely and friendly and the whole set up is so stunning. It's hard to describe the pure sent of retreat you get at this place nestled in a field on the sheep farm away from anyone else. There were so many thoughtful touches and we're already planning when we can come back again.
09/06/2023Laura
The hosts go above and beyond in the welcome, providing everything you need for your stay. They are lovely people who are rightfully proud of a brilliant location. The hut is a few minutes walk from the car through sheep fields and is not overlooked, tucked away in the corner of the field (fenced off from the sheep). There is a wood fired hot tub, a fire pit and a stove inside with an ample supply of wood provided. Amazing place and we will be going back!
26/05/2023Jack
If you want to have a relaxed, peaceful and away from it all experience this is the place to be. You may not be more than a short drive or a slightly longer walk to the nearest village but it feels like you are miles from absolutely anything. To arrive and get the warmest of welcome's, the complimentary items and all the essentials provided for you, next time we will take much less just in case, to being left to your own devices confident that if there is any issue you know it will be dealt with, there is very little to think about. Once we mastered the hot tub, got used to how quiet it was, realised that we had sheep for neighbours, that the stars are actually that bright, it was one of the most relaxing experiences you could wish for. Hopefully it won't be to long before we can return, but seeing how busy the bookings are it could be a while. P.S. the ingenious water borne wine cooler works a treat, just don't forget to empty it when you leave.
21/04/2023Joanne
My partner and I stayed at Swinburne for our anniversary. We wanted some peace and quiet and time to ourselves in nature to just enjoy each other's company. We were blown away immediately when we arrived, the pictures definitely don't do it justice. The hosts were fantastic and so friendly. The hut was to such a high standard and we couldn't have asked for more. We loved every second of the stay.
28/10/2022Fern
We had the most amazing stay here. It was a stay booked with intentions of staying put, so it's seclusion was perfect. We were met by Claire & Paul who kindly assisted with luggage as it's set away from the place you park your car. We were driven over fields and in the distance, appeared the most beautiful shepherds hut! The fire was on, it was superbly clean and we were set of 3 nights of pure relaxtion! It's very difficult to go 'off grid' these days but there were board games and clear skies for stargazing so we couldn't have wished for anything more! Something wholesome about a whistling kettle and a crackling fire!
21/10/2022Danielle
Hosts couldn't have done more for us. From leaving a fresh loaf of bread and milk to giving us a lift to the hut with our bags. The hut was immaculate and they have thought of everything to make your stay as comfortable as possible.
30/09/2022Megan
Our stay at Swinburne was truly amazing from start to finish. The hosts are fabulous and nothing is too much trouble for them, we were made to feel really welcome. The hut itself is well thought out with lots of lovely touches both in terms of decor and facilities. The hot tub was lovely and the stargazing - WOW! I would highly recommend this place to everyone looking for a quiet, peaceful break, off the grid but with plenty of lovely places nearby to go off and experience.
23/09/2022Rachael
One of the most fantastic places we have ever stayed. The hut was in a stunning secluded location. We really enjoyed spending our evenings in the hot tub looking at the stars. Lots of activities to do locally - walking, national trust properties and roman remains. The Lishmans couldn't be better hosts.
29/08/2022Laura
Our stay was perfect from start to finish, the Shepard's Hut was so beautiful, the location was remote enough to relax but close enough to everything to explore the beautiful Northumberland countryside, we loved using the hot tub after a day exploring and BBQing and firepit whilst waiting to watch the stars Everything was catered for, there were lots of lovely little touches around the hut, they really have thought of everything, I cannot recommend this place enough!
08/08/2022Kelly
Outstanding. Beautiful secluded area. Everything we could of asked for and more. Extremely well thought out. We will definitely be suggesting to our friends and family as well as revisiting ourselves.
29/07/2022Lorraine
We had a wonderfully relaxing weekend at Swinburne. Everything at the hut was to such a high standard and very spacious. The location is so peaceful and we loved listening to the sound of the stream and the wind in the trees. If you want somewhere to completely unwind, this is the place for you!
24/06/2022Vanessa
This was an absolutely idyllic place to stay! The owners have thought of every detail, and it was such a comfortable and relaxing experience.
20/05/2022Kathryn
We loved the Swinburne shepards hut so much in October 2021 we just had to visit again. This place is so unique and special and the perfect getaway for my birthday celebrations. The location is idyllic the perfect combination of private getaway and perfect location to explore the delights of Northumberland. The Shepard’s hut is very picturesque and has that camping under the stars feels with all the comforts from home. If you are wanting to get away for the hustle and bustle of life this is the perfect getaway to unwind and discover many hidden gems of Northumberland. We will certainly be visiting again, I am looking forward to meeting the hosts again. They super friendly and add lovely homely treats on your arrival. I highly recommend a stay here, top tip is get in that hot tub on a clear night to enjoy a bottle of bubbley under the stars - a highlight of our stay here. Thanks Lisa and Mike
02/05/2022Lisa
We loved every minute of our weekend at the hut and only wish we could have stayed longer. We spent the days touring the Roman sites (all very close by) and the evenings sheep-watching and star-gazing from the hot tub. We’ve stayed in a few shepherd’s huts and this one was by far the most spacious - you can get in the bed from both sides, and the shower is big enough that you don’t bang your elbows on the sides when washing your hair! There was plenty of wood for the fires, and the charging points for phones were very useful if you needed to be in touch with the outside world. That being said, you are entirely secluded, and except for a few nosy lambs, you could hide away from everything, which was just what we wanted. Absolute heaven!
29/04/2022Nina
Amazing from start to finish. Everything from our warm welcome on arrival, then the moment we got our first sight of the Shepherds hut took our breath away. The inside of the hut was amazing and all the extra little personal touches made it such a special break away. Watching the shooting stars from the hot tub made our stay even more magical and our hosts were amazing. 'A little bit of heaven'
13/12/2021Seonaid
We had an absolutely brilliant time-everything been so carefully thought out and every wish catered for-a very high level of accomodation and the Lishmans were so friendly and helpful..the hut is perfectly situated to explore a stunning area, with so much to do even out of season. We can’t speak highly enough of the whole experience.
08/11/2021Claire
This trip was booked as a 40th birthday present for my partner. we both have young children and live busy lives so just wanted someplace to relax and unwind together. Everything about our stay was amazing. the accommodation was immaculate and the scenery was to die for. Also the hosts were so lovely and very helpful. Only improvement would be to have some outside lights as it is pitch dark in the winter making it hard for hot tub at night. But when speaking to the host they said that they are getting fitted shortly.
05/11/2021Paola
Very comfortable shepherds hut in a quiet rural location. Excellent hosts.
29/10/2021Alastair
We loved everything about our stay. When we arrived we were greeted by Clare and paul who were so welcoming. We had a long journey and the weather wasn't great but as soon as we arrived we just felt so relaxed and calm. I honestly cannot recommend this place enough we loved everything about it and will be returning.
06/08/2021Jenny
Fantastic accommodation, great location. Hosts were lovely and really welcoming.
30/07/2021Dan
From start to finish this was an incredible stay. Such a warm welcome and fabulous hospitality with all the little treats and attention to detail. Nothing was left unconsidered, and we had such a peaceful and relaxing stay at this idylic base for our adventures around the surrounding Roman sites.
26/07/2021Georgina
The definition of an oasis! Arrived directly from busy central London and enjoyed every second of our stay, listening to the little stream and the sheep. What an amazing sheperds hut, what a phenomenal location! If you want to properly unwind, THIS is where you have to go. Big thank you to the lovely and caring hosts.
23/07/2021Felix
"The pictures do not do this place justice!" I Exclaimed as we were helpfully guided across the field, setting our eyes upon this beautifully picturesque hut and surrounding land. The owners of this amazing property were very welcoming, friendly and made us instantly feel at home. The hut is tastefully decorated, fully stocked with all your necessities. The hot tub is the perfect place to enjoy the garden and surrounding scenery, nature and beauty in every direction. We enjoyed a visit to the Riverside Kitchen, catering for Gluten Free, offering delicious home made meals and treats. The near by Bird of Pretty sanctuary was well worth the visit too. We will definitely be returning!
02/07/2021Matthew
It was fantastic from beginning to end. Communication was fab and the hosts couldn’t have been any more helpful
18/06/2021Karla
Such a lovely, relaxing time with the hot tub going and the lambs hopping about and peering through the fence. We only left the hut to walk down the road to the pub!

The hut is perfectly cosy. You get a lovely warm welcome from the owners and little treats to enjoy. The location of the hut is remote but perfect for what we wanted and the owners kindly provide transport to the hut with your luggage. The only neighbours you'll see are the sheep in the next field and the only thing you can really hear is the stream (or rain). I would highly recommend booking here, the hot tub is also amazing!

Wow if you like remote and on your own no other huts around then this is ideal. The hosts were brilliant and gave you extra touches like food boxes, cakes were fab that were left as a welcome gift, Hot Tub was brilliant and the stay was brilliant.

Beautiful accommodation and surroundings, very relaxing and private. The hosts were very welcoming and helpful.

it was perfect!

Hosts couldn't have done more for us. From leaving a fresh loaf of bread and milk to giving us a lift to the hut with our bags. The hut was immaculate and they have thought of everything to make your stay as comfortable as possible.

One of the most fantastic places we have ever stayed. The hut was in a stunning secluded location. We really enjoyed spending our evenings in the hot tub looking at the stars. Lots of activities to do locally - walking, national trust properties and roman remains. The Lishmans couldn't be better hosts.

We had a wonderfully relaxing weekend at Swinburne. Everything at the hut was to such a high standard and very spacious. The location is so peaceful and we loved listening to the sound of the stream and the wind in the trees. If you want somewhere to completely unwind, this is the place for you!

Very comfortable shepherds hut in a quiet rural location. Excellent hosts.

We loved everything about our stay. When we arrived we were greeted by Clare and paul who were so welcoming. We had a long journey and the weather wasn't great but as soon as we arrived we just felt so relaxed and calm. I honestly cannot recommend this place enough we loved everything about it and will be returning.

From start to finish this was an incredible stay. Such a warm welcome and fabulous hospitality with all the little treats and attention to detail. Nothing was left unconsidered, and we had such a peaceful and relaxing stay at this idylic base for our adventures around the surrounding Roman sites.

It was fantastic from beginning to end. Communication was fab and the hosts couldn’t have been any more helpful

Such a lovely, relaxing time with the hot tub going and the lambs hopping about and peering through the fence. We only left the hut to walk down the road to the pub!
