Overview
Settled between woods and meadows, the Welsh word 'Cynefin' means ‘rooted in place’ – everything is new and sparkling but feels like it’s been here for much longer. The Felgate family saw something in the overgrown trees and unloved farm buildings of its origins, with visions for futuristic pods handcrafted by local artisans. The pods curve and swoop, with a wide terrace for sitting out and basking in the sun, and inside a fully-equipped kitchen has everything you need to cook up a feast. Beds appear to float and are topped with feather duvets, bathrooms have rainfall showers. Dim the lights for a cosy dinner for two, stoke the wood-burner on crisp winter eves, and momentarily brave the chill to slip into the hot tub on your outside deck. You might wake to the hoot of an owl or the sound of gently melodic birdsong. You can wave to your neighbours next door, but each pod at Cynefin Retreats is carefully angled with privacy in mind.
Nearby there are plenty of hikes, Offa’s Dyke and the Wye Valley Walk – stick wet gear and walking boots in the cloakroom to dry off if the weather turns. Rent a canoe to glide along the river and stop off at pubs for pints of local cider and plates of chips or make a trip into Hay for dinner out – the Globe hosts good quality curry and burger nights, St John’s Place serves inventive tapas and cocktails. Forgotten supplies? There’s a farmer’s market about a mile away – grab a picnic and a book for long afternoons among the shady willow trees, bring torches for late-night meandering, and swim suits for wild swimming in the Wye. Pull out the board games in front of the fire or cosy up and stream a movie using the cabins fast WiFi and 4G.

Meet your hosts
Meet Lorna and Steve
Bringing Cynefin Retreats to fruition has been 6 years in the making, starting in 2012 when father and daughter team Steve and Lorna first visited the plot of land, consisting then of an almost impenetrable woodland and some decrepit low grade utility barns. Yet even in its overgrown and unloved condition, Lorna could feel the magic of place. They then started to dream of creating a luxury getaway where people could leave their busy lives behind, and find year-round inspiration and rejuvenation in a short break and holiday stay located in the Wye Valley.
The family's inspiration for Cynefin is the wonder and joy of British landscapes – the mountains, hills, meadows, rivers and streams – and their aspiration to make this stunning Welsh-English border landscape accessible and enjoyable, year-round, whatever the weather. Like others, the pair have often headed to warmer climes where living in the outdoors is more-or-less guaranteed by a stable climate. They dreamt of creating a natural, uncontrived holiday destination in the UK, for people to escape to where it remains possible to enjoy nature and an outdoor lifestyle all year round. Lorna and Steve were so excited when this perfect setting of five acres became available and they began turning their dream to reality.
Lorna and Steve's aspiration is to be an exemplar for eco-tourism, founded on a low carbon footprint in aesthetically beautiful contemporary accommodations, providing year-round employment to local people and service providers. They invite you to celebrate the magic of the British climate, famous for its diversity and changeability, from the luxury of their state-of-the-art accommodations, purpose designed for living in the local landscape, across the seasons.
Wildlife & environment
Cynefin is are located on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park, one of only five locations worldwide with a ‘dark sky’ status due to its low light and air pollution. The lodges therefore make for an excellent spot for star-gazing. There is a ‘secret willow garden’ at the end of the woodland, with woven and shaped willow boughs, the perfect quiet spot for a picnic, or reading a book. As you walk through the woodland, you will see habitat piles providing a home for local wildlife, hedgehogs, along with a plethora of bird, bat and owl boxes. There's also a public footpath bordering Cynefin Retreats, which leads up to the hills and down to the river. The path connects into the Wye Valley Walk and Offa’s Dyke is also close by.

We had a fantastic weekend in this cabin surrounded by nature! The accommodation was cozy and equipped with everything needed for a comfortable stay, including all the essentials for our 18-month-old baby. We appreciated the attention to detail and the availability of useful accessories for little ones, which made our stay even more relaxing. A perfect place for a refreshing break—we would love to come back!

Staying at Willow Cabin was an absolute dream. Having 2 nights away from the city, in amongst the most beautiful countryside - truly relaxing. The cabin is beautifully clean, with a glass front allowing you to feel at one with nature, despite being warm and cosy inside. It has everything you need to completely chill out, have a glass of wine in front of the fire or in the hot tub whilst looking at the stars. Hay itself is a wonderful place, the people in the local cafe's and shops are friendly and accommodating, talking to you as if you're an old friend. There seems to be a real focus on whole foods and support of small businesses as well as accommodation for dietary requirements.

Our stay at willow cabin exceeded all expectations, first of all it’s situated on a beautiful farm out the way. It was bright, spacious, clean & so relaxing. I went with my bestfriend and we just had the best girly weekend, enjoying the first of the spring sunshine, in the hottub with a glass of wine. It was perfect.
22/03/2024Lucy
What a fantastic getaway, it was relaxing, homely, cosy and refreshing all in one! My partner and I cannot wait to go back when we get our puppy in a few months. What a fantastic location.
16/02/2024Ellie
WOW is probably the best word to describe our stay! Everything was just so perfect down to the cabin its self, the location, the scenery, the staff it was just an unreal stay. We’ve stayed in many locations but I must say the cabin its self was perfectly equipped which I just loved it had everything. We stayed for two nights for valentines and we just had the most relaxing stay, the views from our cabin was lovely and it was exactly what we wanted… peace and quiet! We left feeling super refreshed with only one regret and that was not booking an extra nights stay as we just didn’t want to leave and come home.
14/02/2024Stephanie
Lovely cabin nice to be able to switch off from the world

17/06/2023Rhian
The two night stay was fantastic. The cabins were amazing and beautiful.
10/03/2023Samuel
A wonderful, relaxing long weekend stay at Willow Cabin. We couldn't have asked for more, well, except maybe warmer weather! The cabin itself is absolutely lovely, with all the comforts of home, but in much more beautiful surroundings. The location is quite remote, but not so far away from civilisation that we couldn't pop out to pick up bread, milk, etc. really easily. It felt like a real treat staying here and we'll hopefully be back in the summer to take advantage of being outdoors more!
03/03/2023Carly
We had a great few days staying at willow cabin, it is such a comfortable pod, with those glass windows and all the light, an absolutely perfect place to stay looking over the green hills in the morning from our bed. The hot tub was lovely in the evening to chill and relax. We got takeaway pizza delivered from one of their recommended suppliers which was a nice change. We took a trip into Hay on Wye for a wander and tried one of the recommended cafes which was fab. It was a fantastic stay and I would highly recommend them.
05/05/2022Louise
Wonderful stay, beautiful cabin with glorious views. Very well equipped and baby friendly. Highchair and travel cot were made available for our stay! Hot tub and fire pit also an added bonus!

A beautiful spot with all the luxuries you could need to relax and rejuvenate. Very welcoming hosts. Comfy bed!!

We had a great two night stay in Willow Cabin. Everything we needed and more was available. Wonderful information of what to do, local places to eat and little secret spots that we wouldn’t have found otherwise. Our view was beautiful and we just had a lovely time
14/01/2022Sarah
Our stay was amazing and had everything we needed / wanted and more!
25/11/2021Hannah
Myself, my partner, 9month old baby and dog went to Cynefin Retreats for a weekend in June which was fantastic. Weather was great, pod had all the amenities that we required (no microwave for sterilizing bottles). Only thing i would say is maybe offer an extra towel/drying rack as only 1 small towel and 1 larger towel is provided per person. With showering and using the hot tub the extra towel would be really useful. The 4 pods were all angled so that we could not see one another. The town of Hay on Wye isnt too far away. The river is beautiful. Very dog friendly area. Lots of parking in town.
11/06/2021Aimee
Had the most wonderful time at Willow Cabin, which I booked as a surprise for my husband’s 40th birthday. Everything had been thought of, from how the kitchen was stocked, to the bootroom, hot tub and fire pit. It wa amazing!
04/05/2021Andrea
We have a wonderful stay here. They had thought of everything possible in this cabin, you didn’t really have to leave! In a lovely location, but near enough to the town if you wanted to do some shopping in the quirky village! Lovely walks, peaceful and tranquil xxx
16/10/2020kylie
It was fab! We loved it, totally relaxing. Had two nights there, did a little trip to Hay on Wye but apart from that stayed at the cabin. The hot tub was great in the cooler evenings and we used the fire pit to cook some food. Bed was comfy and shower was great! All in all, definitely want to go back again (especially when its colder!)
18/09/2020Lindsey
The cabin was immaculate and clean when we arrived. We spent 3 nights there and having the hot tub and fire pit were welcome additions. The privacy of the cabin was great and views amazing.

My husband, our 10 month old baby and I had a great stay at willow cabin. Plenty big enough for the three of us and baby friendly touches - high chair and travel cot already set up on arrival
11/11/2019Hannah
Fabulous stay in this beautiful pod. Fantastic attention to detail, very well equipped and comfortable
04/10/2019Jane
Two blissful nights in a cabin that provided peace and quiet and special touch of luxury. From the moment we parked up on arrival through to our reluctant departure we were mesmerized by everything Cynefin Retreats had to offer. We 100% would return immediately!
18/09/2019Alexandra
Visited for our 25th wedding anniversary and enjoyed both the accommodation and the surroundings very, very much.
09/09/2019Magda
A relaxing 3 night break with my son, to detox from a busy year of work and school. Just the right mix of an idyllic, peaceful setting, and a weatherproof, state-of-the-art, Tardis-like home. We wanted for nothing! The bluetooth speaker, hot-tub and the fire-pit (with logs and marshmallows) were thoughtful extras that made our first experience of glamping one we will never forget.
05/08/2019Cecilia
Lovely relaxing stay. Enjoyed the 'Soft-tub' and the firepit/bbq facilities greatly. A fantastic way to spend our first wedding anniversary.
12/07/2019Jess
We had a great time. We had everything we needed and found the setting really peaceful.
06/07/2019Lydia
The cabins are beautifully crafted with skilful care and precision. The huge glass windows give you views across the fields allowing the sense of being connected to nature from the comfort of the cabin. You can open the doors and let the fresh air in or close up to the night sky and cosy up in-front of the roaring fire. The perfect peaceful escape and stones-throw from Hay, our favourite town of books where you can spend days wandering from bookshop to antique store to deli and more.

What a fantastic getaway, it was relaxing, homely, cosy and refreshing all in one! My partner and I cannot wait to go back when we get our puppy in a few months. What a fantastic location.

Wonderful stay in a beautiful setting. Really impressed with how private it felt, just with trees and hedgerows. Clean and high attention to detail.

Wonderful stay, beautiful cabin with glorious views. Very well equipped and baby friendly. Highchair and travel cot were made available for our stay! Hot tub and fire pit also an added bonus!

We had a great two night stay in Willow Cabin. Everything we needed and more was available. Wonderful information of what to do, local places to eat and little secret spots that we wouldn’t have found otherwise. Our view was beautiful and we just had a lovely time

Had the most wonderful time at Willow Cabin, which I booked as a surprise for my husband’s 40th birthday. Everything had been thought of, from how the kitchen was stocked, to the bootroom, hot tub and fire pit. It wa amazing!

We have a wonderful stay here. They had thought of everything possible in this cabin, you didn’t really have to leave! In a lovely location, but near enough to the town if you wanted to do some shopping in the quirky village! Lovely walks, peaceful and tranquil xxx

Two blissful nights in a cabin that provided peace and quiet and special touch of luxury. From the moment we parked up on arrival through to our reluctant departure we were mesmerized by everything Cynefin Retreats had to offer. We 100% would return immediately!

Visited for our 25th wedding anniversary and enjoyed both the accommodation and the surroundings very, very much.

Lovely relaxing stay. Enjoyed the 'Soft-tub' and the firepit/bbq facilities greatly. A fantastic way to spend our first wedding anniversary.

We had a great time. We had everything we needed and found the setting really peaceful.
