Overview
Squirrel’s Nest is a magical combination of clean Scandi style and childlike wonder, with a spiral staircase that carries you up into the trees and away into another world. While you won’t want for any home comforts - the bed, kitchen and bathroom are all modern and top class - you can wrap nature around you as you sit out on the deck or soak in the wood-fired hot tub with a glass of wine, listening to the birds or waiting for the rustling of a deer. You can cook in nature as well, with a pizza oven and a choice of outdoor seating spots, as well as the unique bbq hut, which you’ll find over a small bridge onto an island in the pond by the treehouse.
Owners Lisa and Richard, who’s house is 40m behind Squirrel’s Nest, fell in love with the area a few years ago and wanted to create a place that would help guests do the same. They’ll mainly leave you to it, but you’ll find plenty of info on great local pubs like the Miner’s Arms, hiking, biking and kayaking in the Wye Valley and walks through the Forest of Dean. If you keep quiet and stay sharp, you might even see the elusive wild boar that roam those peaceful woods. There’s a sculpture trail nearby, a steam railway and some striking caves at Clearwell, with the firepit below as the perfect place to settle when you get back, toast a marshmallow or two and reflect on the day’s adventures.

Kathryn
We were drawn to Squirrels Nest because of how cosy and unique it looked. The BBQ hut and pizza ovens were great selling points for us. We wanted somewhere where we could get away from it all, switch off and have good amenities within where we were staying. The hot tub and fire pit were also a great selling point along with the uniqueness of the treehouse.

Absolutely beautiful location, private and cosy.

This is a truly special place. We have stayed at many Canopy and Stars places (because we know they are always amazing!) but Squirrel’s Nest is really outstanding. Fabulous design, attention to detail and lovely hosts.

We stayed at the Nest for my partner's birthday and had a wonderful time. It is the perfect place to recharge your batteries and be amongst nature, whilst also not being far away from amenities. The Nest is incredibly accessible via public transport - just a train to Gloucester followed by a bus for Bristol-based folk. There was great communication with the hosts. Every detail has been considered by them, and we never found ourselves thinking 'oo wish we had X and Y'. We visited Puzzlewood, GoApe, and took a ride on the Forest of Dean steam train during our stay. There are plenty of things to do in the local area.

I took my partner here to celebrate his birthday. On the first day we went to the local Tesco and bought ingredients for pizza - as we didn’t have any flour they turned out a bit more like bagels. On the second day we found a cute place for afternoon tea and came back to use the bbq hut which we loved. The use of the hot tub was also special - we liked that there was built in seats in the tub. We saw lots of squirrels and ducks. Really enjoyed our stay as we reconnected with nature.

Well what can I see this place is amazing, everything you need has been thought of. There’s been no expense spared, the peace and tranquility has been fantastic even the wild boars that came to visit were fabulous. We used all the facilities available and it took us back to the days before mobile phones and the internet. I didn’t want to leave I will most definitely recommend this place to anyone wanting peace. The hosts are so friendly and can’t do enough for you, we will most definitely be back.

Squirrel’s Nest is a wonderful place. The hosts go above & beyond what is necessary. The facilitates are great and the general area is perfect for getting away from the hustle and bustle of city life. We’re not the best fire starters or pizza makers but we had a great time

We had a wonderful stay at the Squirrel's Nest Treehouse. Then scenary was exactly what we wanted and the home was way above our expectations. The hosts were extremely courtious and responded to any queries we had very quickly and made our stay just that bit more special.
29/03/2024Sam
We had an absolutely fantastic time
29/09/2023Kay
Squirrel's Nest is lovely! Extremely clean and tidy, very well kept and clearly cared about! We had everything we needed! It was my partners' first C&S stay so I wanted an option with a nice kitchen and bathroom, and this didn't disappoint. Lovely hosts, nice location (not much around so be sure to stock up on food etc), and local pubs sadly were shut during our stay (Mon-Weds) BUT overall the location was lovely and quiet, very peaceful!
18/09/2023Stephanie
A lovely short break in secluded surroundings. The treehouse was nicely designed and owner very welcoming.
13/09/2023Alec
Absolutely fantastic place. High quality tree house, no expense spared on interior and the grounds. Lovely place.

We stayed for 2nights and it was perfect. The small hut with BBQ on the lake was perfect for the evenings to have a BBQ and drinks by the fire. The treehouse was clean and very well equipt and our hosts were very welcoming. We visited Puzzle wood and other amazing woodland walks and cycle routes nearby and was perfect for an outdoors adventure.

Whether you come as a couple or a single person, this is the treehouse of my dreams! It was a blissful 2 nights away from the city where I could hear the water flowing through the stream, squirrels running along the tree branches over head on the balcony and a perfect way to spend a Summer UK staycation. I came back from visiting the Sculpture park (10 min drive away) for lunch time just so I could spend the rest of the day at the treehouse, reading and drinking tea. Such a magical gem!
16/08/2023Sophie, Canopy & Stars
A lovely little treehouse, had a relaxing time in spite of the rain! Bbq hut on the duck pond was fab.
10/07/2023Jenny
A relaxing unique break with nature. Accommodation quirky but very comfortable.
23/06/2023Fiona
It was magical. Such beautiful and peaceful surroundings. The treehouse was to the highest standard, cozy and clean with great attention to detail. Kitted out with everything you would need for your stay. The hosts are very welcoming and friendly but equally leave you to enjoy your stay and are not at all intrusive. Although you are in the grounds of the hosts own home, you are completely unaware of them when you are in the treehouse, you feel like you are in the middle of nowhere. Great location for walks and access to the forest. Great pub within walking distance.
19/05/2023Martine
Beautiful treehouse and beautiful location! Great welcoming from the host too. Everything was perfect as we wanted!
12/04/2023Valeria G
I booked a two night stay to celebrate my partner’s 30th birthday. I wanted somewhere special and something a bit different and this treehouse ticked those boxes.
31/03/2023Eleanor
We had an amazing stay at the Squirrel's Nest. It was a lovely cosy weekend where we could watch the squirrels in the trees from the comfort of the cabin with the log burner to keep us warm. The garden and woodland surrounding the treehouse were amazing and the little bbq hut on the Pond is a lovely feature. We also got to make use of the wood fired pizza oven which was a really fun activity, even in the January darkness. Would definitely recommend to friends and family.
27/01/2023Helen
We stayed at the Squirrels Nest from the 28th Nov - 30th Nov for a short getaway to relax and explore the Forest of Dean. We couldn’t have asked for a warmer reception from the Hosts and had such a lovely stay. Would highly recommend.
28/11/2022Louise
A short escape from busy city life, to walk, rest and reset. We remained mindful that our trip was autumn/winter and not summer as per all of the pictures.
25/11/2022Kezz
The most perfect hideaway from the world amid the beautiful woodland of the forest of Dene. Perfect location for exploring from and to come back too to be warm and snug. We really enjoyed using the BBQ hut and Pizza oven, admittedly we weren't the best pizza chefs but we had so much fun trying and the end result was still tasty! Safe to say it's inspired future cooking adventures. The treehouse is the perfect mix of disconnected and everything you could need for it to feel like home, it has just been the most perfect weekend and we were so sad to leave! Thank you Richard and Lisa for creating this wonderful space, it's been magical to come and stay and we hope to be back in future.
11/11/2022Emily
We had a fantastic stay at Squirrel’s Nest treehouse. The property is absolutely stunning and we had everything we could possibly want. When we arrived, we were met by Richard who was extremely friendly.
24/10/2022Alex
The treehouse was lovely. Very cosy and private. The wood burner was great. The bed was very comfortable.
21/10/2022Kate
What a wonderful place, the treehouse was so tastefully decorated, couldn’t have wished for a better place to stay for our short stay, would highly recommend, thank you…
10/10/2022Lisa
Brilliant stay! Beautiful location with easy access to the local pub and a short drive to beautiful walks. We really enjoyed using the BBQ hut and pizza oven and the small kitchen is well stocked. We also enjoyed breakfast on the balcony in the trees! Richard and Lisa were very prompt and kind at responding to our questions and we were lucky enough to try the delicious honey from their bees! Would recommend!
05/08/2022Tara
Me and my boyfriend loved it, we had such a lovely stay at the treehouse. The location is perfect, the treehouse is decorated beautiful and so cosy, the bbq hut is stunning and being surrounded by so much nature is amazing. We had a lovely pizza night using the pizza oven where they turned out amazing, we had a lovely bbq in the hut, the local pub is only a 10 minute walk and being so close to Yat Rock we watched the sunrise which was perfect. A lovely way to spend our anniversary. There was everything you needed in the treehouse and you could tell it was very thought through. We would definitely recommend and would love to stay there again the future.
18/07/2022Phoebe
It was perfect. A super place to unwind and relax. We had beautiful weather which was a bonus. Really lived the outdoor life, cooking late night barbecues after long walks in the day spotting the deer, wild boar, jays and very few humans…idyllic.
11/07/2022Louise
We really enjoyed our stay, it was cosy , relaxing, everything about it was good
06/07/2022Belinda
We wanted a weekend away far from the madding crowd…..and that’s exactly what we got.
03/06/2022Sara
We booked the Squirrel’s Nest Treehouse as soon as it came onto the Canopy & Stars website because it looked so magical. Our stay did not disappoint! Richard & Lisa have thought of everything you might want for your stay. From bathroom toiletries, to milk, jam and biscuits, to all the utensils you’d need for barbecuing and pizza-making. The treehouse is fantastic: modern, clean and cosy with a real sense of being in nature. The bbq hut is awesome and the bbq itself is state of the art! We loved trying the pizza oven even if our pizzas didn’t turn out quite right (not the pizza oven’s fault!). The local pub The Miners is great for an outdoor drink and we enjoyed a filling breakfast at Only Food and Sauces down the road (a big yellow double decker bus decorated Only Fools and Horses Style - you can’t miss it!). Plenty to do nearby - 30mins walk down the road there’s a bike rental centre. We rented two bikes and did the family cycle trail through the forest which was fantastic and pretty much suitable for all fitness levels! We arrived by public transport and it very easy. From Gloucester we took a bus right to the village so it was very straightforward!
01/06/2022Gemma
It was wonderful. Richard was a great host, extremely friendly and helpful. The house was well positioned within the trees. We also loved the BBQ hut on the island and the pizza oven was a great success. The Forest of Dean is beautiful and full of wildlife. We even saw a wild boar family under the Squirrels Nest one evening. Loved seeing the free roaming sheep in the villages and even at a pub that we visited. Great walking area.
20/05/2022Christine
We had a great stay at Squirrels Nest Treehouse for my girlfriends 30th birthday. We stayed for 2 nights and thoroughly enjoyed it - the treehouse is fantastic. Such a nice, unique place to stay.
18/05/2022Alex
Excellent. Very relaxing. Beautiful spot. The hosts were so welcoming. We saw lovely wildlife: foxes, boars, birds and ducks. We visited the beautiful sculpture woods and a trip on the steam train was fun. Being in a tree house was magical . We will definitely like to visit again.
16/05/2022Nikki
The location was gorgeous, picturesque and peaceful. We had a wonderful and relaxing time and would recommend the venue to others.
29/04/2022Jack
Being up in the canopy of branches and enjoying the site of squirrels and birds darting across nearly within our grasp was a lovely experience. Hearing a nearly deafening morning chorus of birds across the woods of the Forest of Dean echoing around far and wide is a stark reminder of what we are missing in the city. We do hear birdsong in our garden but never like this where you feel you are in a wide ocean of birdsong. The treehouse is cosy and lovely. The smell of wood inside enhances the feeling of being amongst the trees. We greatly enjoyed the BBQ hut and making a pizza in the pizza oven. We had a lovely walk across the woods up to the Mallard Pike Lake where we were treated to a delicious vegan panini and a lovely vegan cake - we did not expect such amazing vegan options in the heart of the Forest of Dean. But the greatest treat was seeing a family of wild boar from the treehouse at dusk on our first evening - 3 big adults and about a dozen little piglets! That was a first and an immense delight. Richard and Lisa were lovely and most helpful with any local advice and with instructions how to use the pizza oven...
28/04/2022Lianka from Canopy & Stars
Fantastic chilling couple of days . Such a lovely place. BBQ hut on the Gonks Island was great . We cooked our food whilst watching a dear about 50 foot away grazing.
20/04/2022Paul
Wonderful stay, so relaxing. Beautiful tree house, great location.
15/04/2022Janice
We thoroughly enjoyed our two night stay. It is a beautiful spot and so peaceful and tranquil. We wished we could have stayed longer. We particularly loved the outdoor pizza oven and indoor bbq on the island in the pond. David and Lisa had literally thought of everything from having lovely toiletries in the bathroom to providing every kitchen utensil you could possibly need.
13/04/2022Emma
We had a fabulous stay in the Squirrels Nest. Despite the weather not being the best it was very warm and cosy, with all amenities to hand. Sitting on the balcony in the morning watching a squirrel run through the trees was a highlight. We didn't get to use the BBQ hut or Pizza oven, but did have a lovely fire pit one evening. Very friendly owners and a beautiful place to stay. We hope to return again one day.
11/04/2022Marianne
cosy cabin for short stay of 2 persons .all you need in a lovely "romantic" setting without losing out on modern comfort. Not for hard core wilderness fans as wifi, skytv,en suite shower and all mod coms are there.
08/04/2022Dirk
Loved it - host was friendly on arrival but respected privacy otherwise, accommodation was as described, location was great for exploring the area, and weather was perfect.
18/03/2022Ben
We stayed from February 23rd to 25th & had a wonderful, relaxing break, it was so perfect I every way, just what was needed ❤️
23/02/2022Jason
It was perfect! The treehouse came with everything we needed, lovely toiletries, warm and cozy, the bed was so comfy we didn’t want to get out! It really was the perfect little hide away. Richard was very helpful if we needed anything and even lent us some flour to stop our pizza dough from sticking. The bbq hut and outdoor pizza oven were great activities to do and the garden was beautiful and peaceful. It was a perfect weekend away- thank you!
18/02/2022Holly
The accommodation was clean and homey. The treehouse was just gorgeous, along with the accompanying house on the lake. It was so close to the Forest of Dean that we were able to take many walks into the forest. The lovely fireplace and pizza oven were a treat.
14/02/2022Stascia
Lovely little weekend away! The treehouse was so much warmer than it looked and was very cosy, it had everything you could possibly need. It was located near to some lovely walks and nice local pubs. We loved the BBQ hut and enjoyed cooking breakfast on it, what a way to start the day! We arrived a bit late in the evening so was very dark and didn't get chance to use the pizza oven which was a shame, but it looked amazing. Our hosts were helpful. We loved our stay and loved the biscuits and jams/chocolate spread that were provided.
11/02/2022Tammy
We had a most lovely stay! The place was perfectly clean, cosy, and equipped with all the things we needed to make our stay very comfortable. We enjoyed long walks from the treehouse, had a lovely barbeque in the hut, and went to some great pubs nearby. Highly recommend staying here for a nice weekend break!
04/02/2022Kalin

We had the most wonderful few days in squirrels nest It looked different and was different but the quality was outstanding
08/11/2021Nicky
A real hidden gem, lovely peaceful location. With the perks of a bbq hut and a pizza oven. Richard & Lisa we’re lovely hosts. It was very clean, and well presented. The log burner made it super cosy too.
25/10/2021Nicola
This weekend away was fantastic. Such a different experience. Despite being in someone’s back garden, it felt like we were very secluded. The location, in the middle of the Forest of Dean, was perfect, we could walk right into the Forest. The treehouse was quite unique and beautifully designed with all the mod cons and everything of high quality. Having a pizza oven and BBQ shed at our disposal too was brilliant. The host was very welcoming, very responsive to queries but respected our privacy.
22/10/2021Philip
Upon arrival at squirels nest treehouss the owners met us to give us a guided tour of the property and how to use the amenities. They reassured us that if we needed to we could ask them for anything! Situated within their back garden the place was surprisingly secluded with you not realising that you're on someone's property. The treehouse is nestled within an array of trees all bustling with wildlife and nature. The amenities such as the pizza oven and bbq were used on all nights of our stay with the bbq being our favourite ! It allowed us to keep warm within the cold winter months and sheltered us from the rain and wind ! While providing us with home cooked food. The treehouse is located a 10 minute drive from the local tesco which meant we could get everything we needed conveniently. The hosts Richard and Lisa paid attention to detail providing us with milk, jams and honey as well as biscuits which was a sweet touch and much appreciated. We would definitely recommend this place to any wildlife lovers as well as people who love to cook. It was a 10/10 experience and we would definitely come again.

We loved our stay at Squirrels Nest. The facilities and setting were stunning. Richard and Lisa have created the perfected getaway but with the convenience of being close to town. You forget where you are and get lost over looking the grounds. Waking up and and overlooking the tree watching the squirrels was a highlight.

Very enjoyable and relaxing time. The accommodation was well equipped and spacious. The amenities were also very good. The hosts went above and beyond to make our stay as enjoyable as possible, whilst also leaving us to enjoy our stay. Nice local walks and attractions. Pizza oven and coal BBQ were great.

We were very much looking forward to our stay at Squirrel's nest & it didn't disappoint in any way. Attention to detail was second to none. Sitting outside in the morning sunshine up in the tree tops was amazing. We cooked outside all three evenings on the BBQ & attempted to use the pizza oven which was tricky! We would highly recommend a stay in this beautiful part of the country & I'm sure we will return!

We had such a lovely time at the treehouse. Everything had been so well thought through and everything we needed we found instantly. The location is gorgeous and peaceful and lots of Forest of Dean activities only a 10 minute drive away.

We had a wonderful long weekend at Squirrel's Nest. Perfect location for exploring the Forest of Dean. The treehouse is fabulous. Immaculately clean and every thing is thought of. The shower is lovely, the bed is super comfy and the balcony is perfect for a glass of wine and watching the wildlife. We also enjoyed the BBQ in the hut on the pond - we spend our whole evening in there! I would recommend this little place wholeheartedly; it's a great escape from daily life! Thank you Richard & Lisa.

Me and my partner stayed here for a couple of nights during his birthday week and have both agreed it is the best place we’ve ever stayed. It is idyllic, relaxing, fully equipped, has brilliant hosts and is SO unique! Richard & Lisa were lovely and extremely helpful (even kindly lending us flour one night for our pizzas!) After mentioning that we were vegan Richard also went to the effort of finding us some carefully picked vegan snacks for the apartment and my partner’s birthday which was so thoughtful and made our stay that extra bit special. On top of the choice of wonderful walks and picnics, the Treehouse offers the use of the pizza oven (just a stones throw away and back up the path), and the quaint BBQ hut meaning that you can treat yourself to delicious food without having to go out to a restaurant (if you want to stay within your fairytale and nature filled recluse!) We are so happy we have found this gem and I would 100% recommend you visit - it is perfect if you need a calming reset or just fancy something different and fun-filled!

The perfect getaway right in the heart of the Forest of Dean! This space really offers sanctuary after a day of exploring and is a great in all weather! Morning coffee on the decking listening to the birds, or bat watching at night; cosying in on cold nights by the wood-burner, or sitting by the firepit on warmer evenings; cooking in the BBQ hut on a wet night or firing up the outdoor pizza oven and relaxing in the sun. This space offer all the home comforts you might need in a unique space with very friendly Owners on hand to make sure your getaway is as enjoyable as possible!

We had a wonderful stay in this treehouse. While compact, the treehouse had all the comforts of a modern hotel whilst artistic in design. Outstanding location amidst wildlife and a pond. Very thoughtful in ensuring the smallest things are provided. The hosts were very helpful in guiding us on activities in the vicinity during our stay.

We were away for my husbands 50th birthday and we had a wonderful relaxing stay at the treehouse. There is a fantastic BBQ hut, pizza oven and a hottub, so you can relax in the hot tub after a fantastic bbq and watch the wildlife in the surrounding woods. It's a magical place and we loved it, we'll definitely go again.

A lovely little treehouse, had a relaxing time in spite of the rain! Bbq hut on the duck pond was fab.

I booked a two night stay to celebrate my partner’s 30th birthday. I wanted somewhere special and something a bit different and this treehouse ticked those boxes.

We stayed at the Squirrels Nest from the 28th Nov - 30th Nov for a short getaway to relax and explore the Forest of Dean. We couldn’t have asked for a warmer reception from the Hosts and had such a lovely stay. Would highly recommend.

A short escape from busy city life, to walk, rest and reset. We remained mindful that our trip was autumn/winter and not summer as per all of the pictures.

It was perfect. A super place to unwind and relax. We had beautiful weather which was a bonus. Really lived the outdoor life, cooking late night barbecues after long walks in the day spotting the deer, wild boar, jays and very few humans…idyllic.

The location was gorgeous, picturesque and peaceful. We had a wonderful and relaxing time and would recommend the venue to others.

Fantastic chilling couple of days . Such a lovely place. BBQ hut on the Gonks Island was great . We cooked our food whilst watching a dear about 50 foot away grazing.

We hope to return again one day.

cosy cabin for short stay of 2 persons .all you need in a lovely "romantic" setting without losing out on modern comfort. Not for hard core wilderness fans as wifi, skytv,en suite shower and all mod coms are there.

Loved it - host was friendly on arrival but respected privacy otherwise, accommodation was as described, location was great for exploring the area, and weather was perfect.

A real hidden gem, lovely peaceful location. With the perks of a bbq hut and a pizza oven. Richard & Lisa we’re lovely hosts. It was very clean, and well presented. The log burner made it super cosy too.
