Overview
This might be a human-sized beehive, but there’s no colony of guests, just the two of you. Sip champagne as the steam from the outdoor bath drifts up the rock walls that make the Humble Bee such a hidden spot or fold back the various doorways and let the woodland flow in. Moving between the landings inside, you’ll find thick furs, a day-bed for lounging and on the top floor, a king-size bed that appears suspended in the ceiling. The light from the honeycomb feature wall and heater flickering off reclaimed crates, barrel strapping and rich, dark wood give the hive a sultry, honeyed glow.
If you choose to venture out of Humble Bee in search of the sweet nectar of adventure, then the wilderness of Dartmoor is merely a bumble away. Take the short tramp to the Railway cafe or grab bikes from the nearby youth hostel, get a good route from Yvette and range a little further. You’re just a hop from town, so you might hear the nearby park and local school from time to time, but it also means you can drop into the shops of Okehampton then retire to Humble Bee’s kitchen to cook up a storm. There is even a hot tub shared with your neighbours in The Bird Box and Nutshell at Honeyside Down. However, it’s in the cosy den of the hive where you’ll likely spend most of your time - soaking in the amazing private outdoor bath and napping and luxuriating in the wonderfully creative habitat of Humble Bee.
As featured on George Clarke's Amazing Spaces on Channel 4.

Meet Yvette
Yvette is a warm and lovely gallery owner and environmental artist who has lived in her dream house at 129 Station Road for several years. She studied environmental art at the Royal College and says, "all my work grows out of the experience of specific spaces, allowing the locations to dictate size, design, and theme." Designing Moonbeam, The Bird Box, Humble Bee and the Pottering Shed has been a real treat and all nestle nicely into the landscape.
She also has a small art gallery in town, showcasing the work of up to 50 different artists and designers exhibiting at one time: painters, printmakers, photographers, textile designers, jewellers, potters, and glass workers, woodworkers and sculptors all find a space for their work here, and are mostly local but with some well-chosen pieces from outside the South West. Pop in for a browse, and if something tempts you, Yvette will give you 10% off the first thing you buy!
Wildlife & Environment
Deer have been known to graze the undergrowth of the bottom garden and a very active fox lives nearby! There are squirrels by the dozen and an array of colourful and vocal birds from wrens to woodpeckers, robins to chaffinches. At night it's quite normal to hear the hoot of owls.
Okehampton is on the edge of Dartmoor National Park with wild, open moorlands, deep river valleys, forests, wetlands and dramatic tors. An area with a rich history and rare wildlife.

I booked this accommodation for my partners 30th birthday present. She was absolutely over the moon, the outdoor bath, hot tub and house were all absolutely exceptional. The countryside feel and nature is what drew me to the accommodation originally.
24/11/2024Chris
We booked Humble Bee for our 30th wedding anniversary. It was a night two night stay. We wanted something quirky and memorable. It was quiet, secluded and in the most lovely location. Humble bee was even more gorgeous than the pictures showed. We absolutely loved it and the outdoor bath and hot tub was a real treat and still fabulous even in the rain with a glass of champagne!
29/09/2024Claire
Had 2 nights at the humble bee. It’s a fantastic place but 2 nights was enough with all the stairs!
09/09/2024Anita
What an amazing place to stay! From the moment we walked down the steps to Humblebee we were able to relax. Such beautiful accommodation with everything that we needed for a two night break. We used the hot tub and the outside bath which were a real treat. Okehampton station is on the doorstep did foot and bike access to Dartmoor. Just a short walk in to the town where we found nice pubs and independent shops. Yvette was a very friendly and helpful host. We’d definitely love to visit again.

We booked The Humble Bee for my boyfriend’s 25th birthday and it did not disappoint. It absolutely exceeded our expectations and was such a beautiful, peaceful and romantic stay surrounded by nature. I would definitely recommend this to anybody looking for a cosy getaway, couldn’t fault it! Thank you Yvette for being so welcoming too.
01/08/2024Taylor
Wow is the best word to describe the beehive , it’s pretty amazing and very unique . The pictures don’t do it justice , everything you need under one very unique roof . The location is very surreal on the edge of a town but so peaceful . The town itself has everything you need and the surrounding area is beautiful with some amazing walks .
10/05/2024Carl
We had a fantastic time in Humble Bee. It is a unique and beautiful building, in a fantastic location allowing easy access to both great eateries and wild countryside. The cabin itself was so cosy and romantic. A truly wonderful experience

It was wonderfully quiet and relaxing. Just what we wanted

Wonderful stay in Humble Bee - well-equipped and well-maintained accommodation, comfortable bed, and flexible host.
19/05/2023Philippa
We had a wonderful second stay at Honeysife Down, the Humble Bee is a great new addition. Wonderful design and lovely and cosy. Kitchen facilities really good and lots of room. Yvette is a great host.
06/04/2023Frances
We absolutely loved our stay at Humble Bee! I had been wanting to go for so long, and whilst usually the place never is as good as the photos, this place did not disappoint. The owner Yvette was very friendly and helpful and the accommodation was so cosy! We had the most relaxing time and loved the satay there. I have never seen such unique design.
09/03/2023Louise
What a wonderful and delightful place to stay. One of the most unique, lush, and well designed spaces I have ever stayed in. It was so gorgeous, peaceful, calming and we loved every minute of it. Yvette our host was throughly welcoming and charming and had provided everything we needed. It was just a very special stay in a very special place.
01/11/2022Chris
We had the most amazing stay at the Humble Bee. Yvette was an incredible host who offered so many suggestions ahead of arrival and the location and property itself was just stunning.
23/09/2022Joshua
Humble-bee was recommended to us and we are so pleased we went. It was magical, a perfect location and the owners could not have been more helpful. Yvette's suggestions of where to go/see we're spot on, it was like she knew us. The actual Humble-bee was lovely to stay in, quiet, peaceful and very relaxing. The outdoor bath was wonderful and we used it everyday - definitely the cherry on the top!
08/08/2022Claire
We had the most magical stay at the humble bee. It was everything we expected and more. Such peaceful surroundings, and there was so many intricate details inside that we were constantly discovering new things! Yvette was a lovely and welcoming host.
29/07/2022Beth
Fantastic holiday, the attention to detail in the accommodation was amazing. Yvette was so friendly and made us feel very welcome. Highly recommend and will definitely stay again.
07/07/2022Alison
We just loved Humble Bee - it was the perfect blend of middle of nowhere while still very convenient. It was walking distance to amazing walks on Dartmoor and bike hire for exploring a bit further a-field, but the really special thing was being able to get the train from London direct to the door of Humble Bee. The long list of recommendations the host gives you on arrival is beyond helpful - the wild swimming spots were out of this world. Even when it rains the hot tub and outdoor bath are there waiting for you to arrive soggy back from a hike on the Moor. It would not be possible to love this place any more than we did.
27/05/2022Marie-Claire
We had the most amazing time here. Having had two previous trips cancelled, we’d waited 18 months to visit but it was absolutely worth it. Location was fantastic and peaceful, accommodation was beautiful (everytime I looked around I spotted another intricate detail)…… and that bath! Wow! Owners were really helpful too. Great communication and always on hand.
09/05/2022Kelly
A fabulous time for not quite campers. Amenities and a cosy bed and yet a little bit of living nearer nature. Peaceful and relaxing away from the everyday,
22/04/2022Eleanor
What a beautifully planned and decorated place. So much thought had gone into detail, the interior and views are beautiful from every angle. A great base for walking or travelling further.
18/03/2022Alison
It was wonderful! Being able to switch off from the outside world and curl up infront of the fire whilst hiding from the rain was just what we needed. Being able to do it in such a fun location was just the icing on the top!
11/03/2022Katie
Such a charming place to stay for a long weekend, with lots of lovely little touches to make you feel right at home. Curled up together in the nook by the faux fireplace under the faux furs was a highlight, as was sipping prosecco in the cosy hot tub while listening to the rain.
10/02/2022Meghan
Yvette was there to welcome us to the humble bee. The up cycled decor especially the hi hat lamp shades and copper plumbing were, along with the eclectic crockery and cutlery, very much my style. The cleanliness, despite being in the middle of the countryside, was top notch, in fact I didn’t see one cobweb or dusty nook or cranny. The outdoor stone bath was a great way to spend a special birfday day! Everything you need is provided. Yvette supplied plenty of useful information on the area and recommendations on things to do and places to visit and to eat out at.
12/01/2022Vivienne
Absolutely loved it, the most unique and charming place I've ever stayed in.
01/01/2022Sarah
Yvette was lovely on arrival she showed us round where we was stopping and also shown us the Hot Tub! We was very impressed with everything.
07/11/2021Caitlin
We chose to stay at the Humble bee, as we stayed at the Birds nest a few years ago, so knew how great the location and the site was. The Humble bee didn’t disappoint, it’s a place you can really switch off if you want to. You don’t have to get in your car, as there’s all the amenities you could want in walking distance, lovely restaurants, shops and takeaways that are also happy to deliver to the site. We love cycling and around a five minute walk takes you to a cycle hire shop where you can cycle along a 9 mile gravel trail, taking you through breathtaking scenery and finishing at a gorgeous country pub. We chose to venture out this time and took a drive to Padstow, which is somewhere we have wanted to visit for a while, it was only a 1 hour and 15 minutes away, and the drive again was through lovely countryside and Padstow did not disappoint. I would highly recommend staying at the Humble bee, it’s such a unique building, you feel so remote with nothing but tree’s surrounding you. The hosts on the site are so lovely and inviting and could not be more helpful if you need anything, but stay out of the way otherwise. Thanks for another great break!
04/11/2021Estelle
The stay was fantastic. We used it a a base to visit a few of our favourite spots in Cornwall as it was only an hours drive. Yvette was the perfect host and gave us a full tour on arrival. I would definitely stay again
10/10/2021Neil
It was amazing! Loved it.
04/10/2021Gerard
We had a fabulous time - the cabin was lovely, and exactly as advertised (if not a bit bigger!). Weather was terrible, but that didn't bother us in our hive.
27/09/2021Dan
A lovely welcome and tour from the host and such a lovely cosy cabin with everything you could need for a weekend away. Location is perfect for walks in Dartmoor and loads of nice pubs nearby.
24/09/2021Ellen
I absolutely loved our stay, it was just what we both needed after a difficult year . It was very private ,dispite being close to other canopy and stars properties, the outside bath was my absolute favourite, I could have stayed in it for the entire trip! The building was very uniquely designed ,and I loved that too, it was literally like staying in a giant tree house ! I felt like a big kid , but an adult at the same time . It's a great place to relax , and the fact that you open up your windows and doors onto the Forrest was magical!
27/06/2021Vicky
We had an absolutely amazing time at the humble bee. So peaceful and was warmly welcomed from the moment we stepped out of the car.
19/06/2021Charley
Really wonderful stay - couldn't have been better! Everything on hand you would need - and the outdoor bath is out of this world!!!!!!! I hate baths - but I stayed in it for at least two hours!
30/04/2021Joe
Really cute place, everything was lovely and we had a great time. Yvette was really understanding about the new lockdown rules and reassured us that everything was fine to go ahead.
30/12/2020danica
The humble bee is an absolutely gorgeous place to stay, we really enjoyed and it was here that my partner proposed to me so it will forever have a special place in our hearts.
04/12/2020Sophie
This was a treat for us both and we LOVED it. Despite COVID restrictions we were impressed with Oakhampton and the people we met. Humble Bee was everything we hoped it would be, from the research we had done on your site and Yvette was a delight. Always at hand but never intrusive and helpful with tips and ideas on the local area. The bath and hot tub were to die for. I will always remember sitting in the hot tub in the pouring rain, sipping champagne with the acorns dropping all around. It was just one of those moments to treasure.
22/10/2020Jane
We stayed for 3 nights from Oct 2nd to Oct 5th and despite the awful weather we had an AMAZING time! Humble Bee was a truly spectacular place to stay, larger than we expected and everything we hoped it would be. Ideal for a romantic stay. The whole place feels very secluded, obviously an essential to fully enjoy the outside bath! The shared hottub also felt relatively private and we didn't see anyone while we took a dip (you will however need to keep your cosie on for this, just in case lol). Everything else about the place was great. The shower lovely and hot (and big enough for 2!), the comfy mid floor sofa room lovely to relax in, the kitchen area had all we needed and the bed is super comfy. Yvette is very friendly on arrival and assures you to call her with any needs/problems but then leaves you to relax uninterrupted. We thoroughly enjoyed every minute we were there and would definitely consider booking again.
02/10/2020Kevin
Absolutely amazing little staycation. The attention to detail that has been put into the humblebee is second to none! We loved every aspect from the private outdoor heated bath to the quirky tin shower room. Just wow, we've left the humblebee feeling very relaxed and can't wait to return there!
31/08/2020Rebekah
We stayed at the Humble Bee for 3 nights after our wedding in February. We had a lovely time! The bed was so comfortable and cosy. The space heater and electric fire were remarkably good at heating the whole place so it stayed nice and warm. From the Humble Bee there are so many different places to eat and things to do. Yvette was extremely lovely and helpful. We couldn't ask for more really!

I absolutely loved my 3 night get away at Humble Bee. After a challenging past 3 months I decided I’d take myself away for R&R. The pics don’t do it justice! Humble Bee is beautiful. The little touches make it so quaint. I love the twinkle lights and the huge comfy bed at the top of the hive

Very good stay. Lovely setting & very special accommodation.

We had such an amazing time at the Humble Bee! It was pure bliss. The building itself is amazing with lots of little details that made it really special. The outside bath and hottub were also a unique and special treat. Annette was really welcoming and helpful with letting us know what was around the area. I miss the Humble bee already! I have already recommend to family and friends.

We had an amazing stay at Humblebee. Everything about it is so cosy and comfortable from the beautiful bed to the lonely snug in the middle floor. We stayed for three nights for our minimoon and it was just the peaceful and relaxing stay that we needed. We loved the location taking advantage of the amazing nearby walks - walking the entire Granite Way and back (18miles) and also over the moors to Belstone. Yvette was a perfect host with a warm welcome and lots of helpful local information. We definitely recommend Humblebee.

A wonderful stay in a beautiful beehive. The outdoor bath is magical and the inside spaces fun and quirky. The bed was super comfy - prehaps too comfy! Okehampton is a lovely little town and all the people were very freindly. Recommend the Highwayman pub for an unusual expereicne and delicious food. Also Sidiki's taxi was great.

It was pure bliss! Such a beautiful hideaway for a few nights away from it all. It is ideal for a winter getaway, super cosy with lots of soft furnishings. We took full advantage of the outdoor hot tub and outdoor bath, which was such a lovely experience.

Genuinely unique venue, really well looked after and really well thought out. We had everything we needed and had a lovely, relaxing stay.

Very unique place to stay. Can tell its be done with care and all the little touches were delightful. Outside bath is great and right on the edge of the moor to go exploring

Humble bee was a fantastic way to relax and get away from the noise of busy life, with loads of cosy features and quirky furniture, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay!

We had a fabulous magical escape here for my partner's 40th birthday. Yvette was so welcoming and friendly and enthusiastic and was also very helpful in advance in arranging someone locally to make a personalised birthday cake which was ready and waiting when we arrived. Having read other reviews I didn't make too many fixed plans as I thought we might just enjoy being right where we were and we really did - from the unique and cosy interior to the terrace and the hot tub and the outdoor bath, everything was delightful. We are very intrigued to come back another day and try the yurt!

We had a wonderful stay as part of our honeymoon. We loved the tranquility of Humble Bee; it was amazing to be so close to nature but feel so comfortable at the same time. We'd definitely recommend to anyone looking for a romanti retreat.
25/07/2019Emma
We have an amazing time at the Humble Bee and the host helped me given my fiancé as surprise for his 30th birthday. We both enjoyed the outdoor private bath which we used every evening because it was so good.
19/07/2019Jess
We had intended to take full advantage of the wonderful range of amenities available locally. However, we found ourselves enjoying the delightful charm and character of this beautiful structure so much, that actually we did very little and opted instead to recharge and absorb the tranquil and calming space provided. We especially enjoyed the hot tub and the outdoor bath as well as preparing our own food and dining on the veranda.
27/06/2019Anthony
The Humble Bee was the most unique, inspirational and magical place to stay. We loved every second and didn't want to leave! The whole concept of staying in a giant beehive was amazing and we loved how everything blended so nicely with the surrounding nature.

I booked this trip as a gift for my niece and her partner. They loved it saying it was the best British holiday they had been on. They enjoyed the nature walks and loved the outside bath. It was very fitting for them to stay at Humblebee as it the same name as their band. The also said the hosts were amazing and they were made to feel very welcome. They even went to a local pubs open mic night which they thoroughly enjoyed

Absolutely stunning, arriving you just wouldn't believe it could possibly be there. The pictures on the website did it for us. It looked very quirky but cosy as well. The pictures in Canopy and Stars were great but they still didn't do it the justice it deserved. What an amazingly stunning structure. And all designed and built by Yvette and her husband (the owners). It really does need to be seen to be believed. The outdoor bath is designed so you can keep the hot water running all the time you're in it so it doesn't matter what time of day or night or what time of year you will never get cold and although on first seeing it, it looks like you're in full view of every one, you soon realise it's very secluded and private. 3 nights was no where near enough especially if you get chatting to Yvette who is not only a bundle of knowledge but also extremely interesting and funny to boot. Can't wait to go back. Thank's Yvette for making our wedding anniversary so amazing.

We had fantastic time at Humble Bee - it truly exceeded all our expectations and made for the most romantic anniversary getaway - couldn’t have asked for more!
17/05/2019Jacob
Everything I had hoped for and more. Really beautifully done. I can't get over waking up to that amount of birdsong and being able to enjoy a cup of coffee looking out through the trees. Loved the shower and outside bath. Blissful.

Our stay was magic - a perfect weekend of relaxing, being more mindful, and enjoying a somewhat "simpler" lifestyle than the every day. We loved the Humble Been so much we barely wanted to leave it! We were left more relaxed than we have been in a long long time, and it has highlighted some practices and principles that we would like to introduce into our every day lives in order to keep that feeling of simplicity and relaxation.
29/03/2019Lana
Absolutely loved it. Will be recommending to friends and family. Loved the design.
08/03/2019Rosie
Loved staying at the Humble Bee with its quirky design and features. Well organised and a great welcome from Yvette. We loved the outside stone bath and how closely we were situated to Dartmoor, with Yvette giving is advise on where to walk.

We stayed at Humble Bee - what a unique experienced. The " lodge " is built using reclaimed products and is really unique. We were welcomed by the owner and shown round. We were made to feel at home from the get go.
05/10/2018Petra
We really enjoyed our time staying in the Humble Bee. The build and architecture of the place is just fantastic. I was given a voucher of £250 from my parents for my 30th Birthday and used this towards our stay. The place had such a cosy and warm feel despite. It blended the industrial feel alongside warm and comfortable bumble bee furnishings. The outside was wonderful to based within the woodland with some beautiful flowers and an outdoor bath and hot tub which really made our stay very special. The location of the Humble Bee is great. We managed to get to Bude Beach on a sunny day and spent a rainy day in the local cinema and surrounding pubs. By far this is the most creative, enjoyable and special place I’ve stayed. It was easy to relaxed and unwind within the accommodation or get out and about if you wanted to. Our host, Yvette was also really friendly and was available if we needed her. I’ll definitely tell my friends about our stay and recommend the Canopy and Stars website.
04/09/2018Kate
A well-deserved birthday break like no other! Highlights were the ingenious outdoor bath - by a long shot - and the wilderness to explore within walking distance (a nice treat not to have to use the car). Make sure to find the quarry for a wild swim! Then a tie between the suspended bed on top floor and day bed on the second - both cosy, luxurious and built for two. Yvette was wonderfully full of energy and passion too - a real treat to meet.
10/08/2018Nada
Humble Bee was an amazing place, so secluded and allowed for pure relaxation. The outdoor bath was a dream! Yvette is so lovely and helpful. The beehive was very impressive and everything is very well thought out. I would definitely visit again.
29/07/2018Debra
Absolute heaven for a get away with privacy, quirky character, comfort of mod cons but connection to the outdoors. Ideal location for exploring Devon too. Hosts are so lovely and we will absolutely be back to visit again.
04/07/2018Natalie
We had a great stay - the accommodation was very well laid out and great fun. It is well placed to be able to do activities during the day.
15/06/2018Will
The pictures do not do this place justice, just beautiful! Amazingly spacious, all the amenities you could want plus the added bonus of the outdoor bath and hot tub. Yvette was so welcoming and knowledgeable, we really valued the recommendations on restaurants and walks. Couldn’t of been a better host.
26/04/2018Nikita
We had an amazing time at the Humble Bee! It was just the two of us on a romantic minibreak to get away from our stressful jobs and enjoy each others company without the distractions of life! We definitely de-stressed during our time here.
13/03/2018Anna
What a great experience! Get what you see Super cosy and warm Lovely owners and a beautiful town!

Staying at Humble Bee was such a unique and wonderful experience. Every aspect of the human beehive was considered and beautifully crafted and we spent many happy hours on each floor and having a bath in the rain mid January has to be one of the most magic experiences of my life!
19/01/2018Yunita
Wow, this really is a one-of-a-kind space. A giant beehive spread over three storeys - I've literally never seen anything like it, it's incredible! The space itself is the latest of Yvette's quirky creations, with walls and doors that open up to bring the outside in and little "bee-themed" touches that make this a truly unique place to stay.

Had 2 nights at the humble bee. It’s a fantastic place but 2 nights was enough with all the stairs!

We had a fantastic time in Humble Bee. It is a unique and beautiful building, in a fantastic location allowing easy access to both great eateries and wild countryside. The cabin itself was so cosy and romantic. A truly wonderful experience

We had a wonderful second stay at Honeysife Down, the Humble Bee is a great new addition. Wonderful design and lovely and cosy. Kitchen facilities really good and lots of room. Yvette is a great host.

Really cute place, everything was lovely and we had a great time. Yvette was really understanding about the new lockdown rules and reassured us that everything was fine to go ahead.

The humble bee is an absolutely gorgeous place to stay, we really enjoyed and it was here that my partner proposed to me so it will forever have a special place in our hearts.

We stayed at Humble Bee - what a unique experienced. The " lodge " is built using reclaimed products and is really unique. We were welcomed by the owner and shown round. We were made to feel at home from the get go.

Humble Bee was an amazing place, so secluded and allowed for pure relaxation. The outdoor bath was a dream! Yvette is so lovely and helpful. The beehive was very impressive and everything is very well thought out. I would definitely visit again.

Absolute heaven for a get away with privacy, quirky character, comfort of mod cons but connection to the outdoors. Ideal location for exploring Devon too. Hosts are so lovely and we will absolutely be back to visit again.

We had an amazing time at the Humble Bee! It was just the two of us on a romantic minibreak to get away from our stressful jobs and enjoy each others company without the distractions of life! We definitely de-stressed during our time here.

Staying at Humble Bee was such a unique and wonderful experience. Every aspect of the human beehive was considered and beautifully crafted and we spent many happy hours on each floor and having a bath in the rain mid January has to be one of the most magic experiences of my life!
