Overview
This area of Devon’s craggy coast is a sub-tropical micro-climate that means it abounds with rare flora and fauna, which makes something as special as The Cove right at home here. It’s been designed by a crack team with experience in travel, construction and interior design, who have artfully shaped it to echo and enhance the sea views that come with the hillside setting. Another testament to its design is the suitability for its intended audience: everyone. Anywhere you choose to relax, from the bed, bath or sofa inside to the outdoor shower, recliners or hot tub outside, you’ll never lose sight of the shifting waves. The only exception might be the sauna, tucked away near the outdoor shower, where you and your partner can retreat into your own vapour-filled world of calm. Indoors there’s a fully equipped kitchen and a top-class TV and sound system that’ll try and draw your eye away from the sea, as well as a handy Vertuo coffee machine to keep you awake long enough to enjoy everything.
You might never leave The Cove once you’ve arrived, but if you do then you’ve got the wonders of Devon’s coast to explore, with beaches minutes away and the coastal footpath running nearby. You’re advised not to explore past the balcony, because the footing is difficult, so you’ll need to head up the steps, past sister space Rook’s Nest to the parking area, but the sense of seclusion this short walk creates is incredible. Once you’re down in The Cove, you can sit and watch for wildlife in the trees or the sea, never troubled for a second by the intrusion of the modern world.

Meet Ross, Martha, Richard and Claire
Hand Breaks is the shared vision of two couples Ross and Martha Travill and Richard and Claire Jeffery who are friends based near Lyme Regis in Bridport. With a shared background in the travel industry, they had a shared vision for creating unique self catering holiday experiences. Each were running their own successful private rentals in West Dorset when an opportunity came up to purchase a truly one-off piece of land in South Devon. They were lucky enough to snap it up and spent nearly six years planning and building the ultimate coastal retreats.
Wildlife and Environment
The area is a sub-tropical micro-climate and has some really unique vegetation, flora and fauna. There are deer, badger, owls, buzzards and many types of sea bird spotted regularly. The site was originally owned by a very forward thinking local doctor in Dartmouth who used it as an area for convalescence for his patients having identified it's potential for healing given it's pristine natural environment. Rumour has it that a certain member of the Rolling Stones stayed there in the 1960s when it was part of a commune.

Caroline
I booked as a surprise for my son’s 21st as I wanted something special. It didn’t let us down. Stunning location and a beautiful lodge. If I could build my own home that would be it. The hot tub takes a long time to heat up but is well worth the wait and stays hot overnight so you can relax and chill again in the morning. The sauna was great and gave the the cove an extra Wow factor. My son loved it he was lost for words at first. We would highly recommend and would stay again and again! A perfect place to relax and enjoy your natural surroundings. Beautiful memories have been made.

We had a wonderfully relaxing stay. The Cove provided everything we needed for a Twixmas break with the kids and our dog and we took full advantage of the hot tub and sauna during our stay which very much sped up the relaxation process! The property is finished to a high quality and the views and surroundings were the icing on the cake. Peaceful and tranquil, a true getaway.

The Cove is a beautiful holiday destination, very clean, everything you could need. The views are wonderful.
26/08/2024Alex
The Cove was everything we had hoped for and more; just the perfect getaway destination. The house was immaculately clean, beautifully decorated and very private. The welcome hamper was a nice touch and having use of the sauna, hot tub and bath made our time here all the more special. The view was stunning, whatever the weather, and I havent felt so relaxed in a long time. The only negative was having to leave at the end. Internet coverage can be a bit patchy which might bother some but it didn't bother us. We will definitely be back!
13/07/2024Alana
A truly beautiful secluded luxury cabin with the most amazing view. Perfect for a few days retreat. It was central enough to get out and about but equally had everything you needed.
24/06/2024Claire
We basked on the decks in the sunshine, bubbled away tension & loved walking the beautiful coastline. The cove is a beautiful & luxurious cabin , everything we’d hoped for & definitely didn’t want to leave on our last day!
18/06/2024Kerry
The Cove is perfect. The house is right up in the trees overlooking a beautiful cove surrounded by wild flowers and birdsong. The house is designed so you can sit and watch the changing sea in so many lovely spaces. From the shady terrace which has patches of sunshine through the day, pretty lights and a steamy hot tub for evenings. From the bedroom bath tub and the reading nook’s beanbags and swingy chair. Even the view from the loo is like a framed living artwork of trees and foxgloves. The house has everything you need; the style, decor and furnishings are calming and beautiful. The attention to detail is spot on. You will relax as soon as you walk into this space and never want to leave!

We had a fantastic time staying at The Cove! It looked great online but the pictures really don’t do it justice - it’s a huge space, really modern and comfortable. One of the nicest houses that we have ever stayed in (and only 45 min drive from home too!)
15/03/2024Tom
From the moment you arrive at The Cove you are immersed in nature. The snow drop lined path amongst the trees opening to the rugged Devon coast with the crash of the waves and the gentle serenade of bird song, is truly awakening. The Cove sits unobtrusively in its surroundings with sensitively chosen materials in keeping with the woodlands and coastal location. We loved the reclaimed scaffold board panelling the earthy tones and sumptuous soft furnishings. Despite being sensitive to the surroundings it also provided that touch of luxury we were looking for. The well appointed kitchen with welcome pack of treats waiting was a lovely touch. Attention to detail with toiletries and linens all add to the touch of luxury. The log burner provided a source of focus for my son, enjoying both laying the fire and gazing into it mesmerised. We loved the rocking chair and cosy rugs and cushions. It gave us the comfort and relaxation we were looking for. The reading nook in the bedroom was a big hit for time to totally recharge whilst taking in the breathtaking view. The free standing bath perfectly situated for views of the sea and and star gazing in the wood fired hot tub. A perfect stay!
08/02/2024Emma
We had an amazing time at The Cove, an amazing location with stunning views out to the sea. The sauna and hot tub were so nice to have after our wet and windy walks with the dogs. The perfect place to relax and chill, despite the terrible weather.
08/12/2023Callum, Canopy & Stars
Had an amazing time, just what we needed after our wedding day. It was like going to our very own spa, the house is nestled in a forest and is so peaceful that you can’t help but absorb nature and release any stress.
02/10/2023Nina
This is a real hidden gem, such a beautiful location and wonderful escape. The weather wasn’t on our side but it didn’t matter we had everything we needed for a super cosy and relaxing break at the Cove. I couldn’t rate it any higher, we’ll absolutely be back.
15/09/2023Faith
It's safe to say The Cove is an absolutely magical place to stay. Set in the woods and with the most stunning sea view it offers both peace and privacy. The cabin itself is designed with both function and beauty in mind. The amenities and equipment are of the highest spec and the open plan kitchen/ living room is both spacious and stunning. We visited in the summer but would love to visit again in the colder months as The Cove can so obviously the perfect holiday for all seasons. 5 stars!

Loved it! A peaceful retreat with lovely views and amenities. Everything you need for a getaway from real life!
22/05/2023Ross
We absolutely loved our stay at The Cove - it was even better in real life than we expected. The position of the house in the woods but with a sea view allowed privacy and yet stunning views. It was beautifully equipped. We walked to (and back) Start Point (24 miles) which is a stunning walk and the bonus was the hot tub had stayed hot enough from the day before to get straight into….while the sauna heated up! It was more than a holiday home - it was an experience. Would totally recommend (but don’t tell everybody as we would like to go back!)
12/05/2023Ruth
Such a beautiful and rare find! This cabin is so spacious, comfortable and well designed. It's equipped with a BBQ and wood-fired hot tub so there is plenty to do whatever the weather and I loved being tucked away in the trees and not lose sight of the sea!
