Overview
Carpenter’s Cabin soothes the tension of modern life right out of you and fills you with the peace of nature. There are rabbits and badgers rustling in the woods, kingfishers streaking over the pond and the sound of the rippling stream in the background. You can gather everyone round the wood-burner in the evening for games, stories and even guitar practice, light the firepit and stargaze in silence or unwind in the wood-fired sauna or hot tub.
The welcome hamper introduces you to the amazing local produce, and walking maps of routes surrounding the site and further afield, invite you to explore. There’s the Granite Way cycle path following the railway tracks from Okehampton and even the beautiful beaches at Bude if you need even more to occupy your time.
Carpenter’s Cabin was designed by Ben and Jo not only to give you a great experience of nature, but also to show how its possible to live more in harmony with it. Wood-burners, compost loos, local timber and solar power all minimise impact on the environment, while careful stewardship of their land has lead to flourishing wildlife that benefits everything except the plants in the kitchen garden, that need firm but friendly defending from slugs! Ben and Jo can talk you through any aspect of living in an ecologically sound way, and even build you a cabin of your own, but all they really want is for you to come and feel the peace of their slice of nature.

Getting there
Devon Dens, Germansweek, Devon EX21 5AL
The Owners do not live on site so please plan your journey in advance by taking into account any holiday traffic, food/drink stops etc. The Owners will need an ETA so make sure to keep in touch with them about your arrival time in advance. If guests are very late due to changing plans, a charge may be incurred.
Main gate: ///crackles.bolt.scout
By car
Directions are easy, although if you are using a phone satnav, you may lose signal for the last bit.
Devon Dens is best approached from the A3079. Use the postcode and take the turning signed Bratton Clovelly. There is a large mast which can usually be seen and the turning is opposite this. The junction is called Castle Cross, Broadbury (make sure it is the turning for Bratton only a mile or so from the site – there are other signs beforehand which won’t work with these directions). Then take the first right after half a mile, signed Germansweek. Devon Dens is three quarters of a mile down that road on the left. Look for the double gates that will probably be open, with an owl on top of the right hand post. Drive in and park on the top car park.

Meet your hosts
Meet Jo & Ben
Jo and Ben spent years living in Brighton, Amsterdam, Spain, Portugal and Greece, before eventually deciding to grow up in Devon. Jo set up and ran The Pickled Walnut restaurant in Okehampton for five years, whilst Ben ran large building projects before specialising in traditional carpentry and timber framing. They watched traveller friends create and live in beautiful and inspiring tiny homes, and in 2011, after another spell in Europe, Ben made the couple a unique wooden home and Barrel Top Wagons was born. They found the site that is now Devon Dens in the same year, and after a lengthy planning process, permission was granted in 2014. The idea has always been to create a natural site with beautiful structures suitable for year round use; to promote the extraordinary landscape and produce in West Devon; to enable guests to holiday in the West Country without trashing the planet. When they’re not building cabins or welcoming guests, the pair can usually be found enjoying the coastal path, wild swimming on Dartmoor or tucking in to a pasty or ice cream in Bude.
Wildlife & Environment
A strong eco ethos is at the heart of Devon Dens – from using locally sourced timber to create the extraordinary cabins, to the newt and toad ladders in the pond, bird boxes, wildlife log piles and the reed beds that treat the water. There’s a wildlife pond and stream, and extensive planting has been done of trees, flowers and hedge. Plenty of information is provided for guests regarding composting, recycling, energy and waste. It is hoped that guests visit with an intention to share that eco ethos.

Idyllic stay. Cabin was lovely, host was lovely. Great location.
17/04/2024Charlotte
We had a lovely stay at Devon Dens, the cabin is amazing. It’s beautifully built and really well equipped. Our 6 year old loved his mezzanine bedroom and exploring the site.
25/03/2024Louise
I had the most wonderful stay at Carpenter's Cabin. Jo, Amy and Ben were very friendly but also respectful of my wish to have a bit of a retreat and some 'alone' time. The Cabin itself was so comfortable - with an excellent shower and very hot water. Very much a plus! The area in which the cabins were set was simply beautiful; the whole area was simply beautiful with fabulous walking. I have no doubt I shall return at some point in the future as there was stlll so much to enjoy.

We had absolutely magical stay, Jo is a fantastic host, thought of everything. The place is stunning

What a wonderful three days we’ve had! We lead busy lives and really needed a way to start to relax at the start of the summer holidays. Within 5 minutes of setting foot inside Carpenter Cabin we all felt so much better. We have never stayed anywhere so peaceful and comfortable. It was like being wrapped in a big hug. The rain came but if anything it added to our ability to really switch off from everyday life. The lack of Wi-Fi and phone signal seemed like a challenge, but what a wonderful thing it was for all of us. Children included.:) The beds were so comfortable, and the children loved their little mezzanine nest in the sky. We took full advantage of the sauna and hot tub and our dog loved the river at the bottom of the beautiful garden. We ventured off for days in local towns and had a trip to the beach, there was a lot to do nearby but our favourite thing was to come back to the cabin in the evening. Our hosts were so helpful- they left brilliantly detailed instructions and made sure that we felt happy before leaving us to our holiday. We really would recommend that everyone try this holiday and we would love to visit again!

We had a wonderful holiday staying at Carpenters cabin. The cabin was beautiful and so tastefully designed. We had everything we needed for an eco conscious holiday- we can’t recommend it enough. You are truly immersed in nature and can completely relax in this idyllic setting. We can’t wait to return in the future- thank you so much for an unforgettable experience.
03/04/2023Carmen
We needed a quiet relaxing place for a short holiday and the Carpenters Cabin certainly provided everything we hoped for. This place is the epitomy of danish hygge. The quality of the entire place both indoors and outdoors was excellent and the little finishing touches just added that personal touch to make us feel welcome. I will highly recommend the Carpenters Cabin - we’ll be back for sure.
22/03/2023Mette
We had a fantastic time at the cabin. The place itself was beautiful and everything was so thoughtfully done. The deck was a dream and the children loved all the frogs in the pond. We were blessed with lovely February weather and spent a day in the beach in Bude. Communication with Jo was fantastic - she was a great host!
13/02/2023Gemma
A fantastic place to get away from it all. No TV, wifi or phone signal is a unique experience, but a great one. The DAB radio made the difference! Very relaxing stay with plenty around to do. Close for walks on Dartmoor or beach walks in Bude. Lots of places nearby for pub lunches. The log burner was lovely and it even stopped raining long enough for us to cook on the grill outside.
30/12/2022Sophie
We a wonderful stay at Carpenter Cabins, it was immaculate, peaceful and beautifully presented. The area was pristine, the log fire and fire pit were a lovely touch as was the food and hampers we ordered. The bed was unbelievably comfortable, perfect mattress and super comfy duvet! It was a weekend we really enjoyed where we could unwind from the business of our lives, turn off all our devices, not worry about what the time was and just chill out and be at one with nature for a weekend! I can't recommend this place enough, it was a perfect weekend away.
28/10/2022Thomas
Quite simply the best! The lodges are incredible, so well made and full of books and games, it feels so homely and peaceful. The fire pit area is a lovely place to take in the nature and look over the pond. I also enjoyed the addition of picking homegrown produce out of the greenhouse. Jo is absolutely lovely and I love the ethos behind a more greener way of living. Highly recommend a stay here.
08/08/2022Lauren
The Carpenter Cabin exceeded any prior expectations that we had - it was just amazing! We decided on staying at Devon Dens to celebrate my partners 30th birthday and I am so happy that we chose this lovely place. We were a group of 8 and we throughly enjoyed all of the luscious land to relax on the hammocks, have a bbq and do some relaxing yoga! Having no wifi and signal was the perfect detox and I feel that we need to do more often to completely switch off! I would 100% this gorgeous place to everyone if you’re going as a large group and I hope that we can visit again soon. Jo, our host, was very hospitable and made everything seamless.
05/08/2022Yasmin
What can one say, we had an incredible time at Carpenter Cabin at Devon Dens. So tranquil, our only regret is that we didn’t stay longer. Jo was an amazing host, ensuring we had everything we required, even down to the personal touch of the Birthday bunting up above the front door when we arrived to a cheeky cider in the Fridge for our 18 year olds Birthday! We’d definitely recommend a stay here in Paradise. Thank you Jo for you hospitality and information. See you soon.
27/06/2022Lisa
We had a very relaxing holiday in Devon Dens. The time seemed to have slowed down, we spent quality time together and made memories to last a lifetime. I got lost in reading few books, my son (11) learned and enjoyed making a fire every evening, we saw a lot of wildlife and children started recognising the birds by their sound. We had beautiful sunny weather with clear skies at night, perfect for star gazing. The logs of wood prompted creativity for drawing and wood carving. I would whole heartily recommend to any family with children as a perfect escape from the world of screens.
18/04/2022Iveta
We had the most magical weekend at the Devon dens carpenter hut. We got all our favourite food in, went on lovely walks and swam in the sea. It was such an amazing site, we had the warmest welcome and felt instantly at home. It was such a delight to not have WiFi, and we were blown away by the quality and standards of the cabin. We’ve been looking and dreaming of staying here for years, and it blew away our already high expectations. The site was quiet and peaceful, we sat out watching stars, ate amazing food off of the bbq. It was so lovely having a trip away knowing that we were having a minimal impact on the environment. Jo and her team keep the garden so well, and the lengths they have gone through to make it truly off grid are astonishing. We have been very lucky and spent a good few years touring with a circus arena show where we got to stay in four star hotels all over the world for years. This place was Better than any of those hotels!!! Even the standard in la! We hope to go there again in the future. Couldn’t thank them enough for such a special weekend.

Debbie and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Carpenters Cabin, quiet, tranquil, peaceful and relaxing, just what we needed. We have come away with some good ideas on how we would like our next home to be. If you are looking for a get away from it all weekend Carpenters Cabin is a lovely place to stay.
07/05/2021Simon
We stayed Monday to Friday at Carpenters Cabin and had a very nice restful stay. Jo was very informative and helpful. The cabin was very cosy with a great wood burner and plenty of books games and puzzles to do if you forget to take your own. Thank you Jo for a good break.
26/04/2021Tracey
Clean and wonderfully eco cabin, quiet and well appointed, great design with lovely pond and fire pit.
16/10/2020Kirsty
We only stayed for two night but was so nice to be ‘off the grid’. Sitting outside till after 10pm looking up at the stars and watching the satellites go by. Listening to all the sounds of nature and watching the animals go about their business without worrying about humans. Our host Jo was excellent keeping in touch before and during our stay. The cabin was clean and very cosy. Would recommend to anyone who wants to escape everyday life for a while to recharge their batteries
09/09/2020Sally
Devon den gave us a perfect get away holiday. It was completely private and quite site. It was exactly what I saw in the photo and it was actually better than the photos. A completely private space was guaranteed, and just sitting without doing anything there made me feel happy and healed. JO was a really cool host and gives bright energy.
10/07/2020April
This was our first family holiday. We have a 3 year old and a 6 week old and it was very comfortable for these 2 nights. It was very different for us to live in a self sustainable way and have taken points to help shape our day to day lives. The cabin was very warm and cosy and as a woodworker myself, I was very impressed with the quality and attention to detail that this cabin has to offer.
09/03/2020Daniel
Great 3 nights and very welcomed by the owner who made everything clear and was incredibly helpful ahead of the trip during and even afterwards sending back some stuff we left there!
19/02/2020Ian
Carpenters cabin is absolutely beautiful, it’s even better than it looks in the photos. It was cosy, comfortable and the perfect retreat from reality. There are lots of lovely walks close by and local pubs! Jo was so lovely and made us feel so welcome.

Jo’s Cabin is perfect, has everything you need to very comfortably stay in the countryside for a few days. Jo showed us around left us delicious home baked bread and eggs and let us get on with a peaceful break. Great location with sauna on site

Lovely stay in the Devon countryside. The cabin was well equipped with plenty of kitchenware, the bed was really comfy and loved having a log fire. Everything was clean and tidy, a lovely home away from home.

We wanted to experience being off-grid in an eco dwelling. The photographs looked amazing and sold the place to us. The whole package was incredible: the site was idyllic, the facilities were wonderful, and the hosts Ben & Jo couldn't have been more welcoming & accommodating. The drive home was the worst thing, leaving such a relaxing haven.

Great cabin, very nice furnished, children loved the outdoor and sleeping under the roof. We make a salade with the vegetables found in the garden, excellent!

We stayed at Carpenter's Cabin for four nights and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Devon Dens is a lovely place which adheres to ecological principles while providing beautiful, handcrafted accommodation, and additional facilities such as a fire-pit and sauna. It was very good to meet Jo - who had provided a lot of helpful information in advance - when we arrived. She showed us round the site and had ordered locally made bread, cheeses, cider, apple juice and cake for us, which were all delicious - especially the cake! We enjoyed walking around the immediate area, visits to Okehampton, Dartmoor, Bude and using part of the South West Coastal Path. But we also enjoyed simply staying around the Cabin and enjoy the peace and quiet.

The cabin has everything you could need and it was good for the children to experience an eco-friendly way of life. Our day were spent enjoying the sunshine, evenings warming by the fire pit. There are plenty of places nearby to go walking, canoeing, or to visit. In all, a perfect relaxing break!

A relaxing space, fab there is no TV or WiFi. Great little stream around the bottom of land that kids played in. All the little touches were fantastic, IE shower gel, shampoo, teabags, sugar, cider, picking veg from the garden. Loved it xxxx

An absolutely beautiful cabin and location with plenty to do. Jo was very accommodating from the start, supplying us with a vegetarian breakfast hamper to get us started. The sauna was delighful after a busy day to unwind. There was plenty of room for myself, partner and the three children and they didn’t go unentertained. Beautiful sights and great food at the local pub. The perfect way to relax and spend quality time with the children away from city life.

We wanted a few nights away together to relax and forget about the general day to day life stresses!! We also wanted some child free time but planned to do some walking so wanted to take our puppy Oscar. Carpenters cabin allowed us to do all of that...Oscar absolutely loved it too! It Exceeded our expectations! A beautiful place, inside and out, with creative decor inside the cabin, a cosy log burner....an absolute haven....just want we required. Jo was lovely, was there to greet us and advise on places to walk, eat out etc....she was on call had we required anything else during our stay. I would highly recommend carpenters cabin to anyone wanting to relax, I have already recommended it to many of my work colleagues.
25/01/2019Liz
An absolutely perfect start to 2019. The cabin was spot on, so well designed and cozy, especially once the Aga wood burner was in full flow. Great surroundings to explore. Perfect for couples wanting a quiet getaway from everyday life or a family wanting to get into nature a little. We will be back with the family no doubt at all. Jo was very welcoming and gave an explanation of the cabin’s features. We even had some locally produced cider and apple juice waiting for us. The cabin had everything we need plus that extra special atmosphere that just can’t be bought.

Our stay could not have been better. We stayed for two nights late November and absolutely loved it. Jo was really helpful and couldn't give us enough information when we arrived which was great. Bude beach is a half hour drive away and there are lots of places to go walking. We lit the log burner every night and also cooked on the firepit outside. This is definitely the place to go if you need to escape the real world for a little while to switch off and relax!

Four good friends and myself spent a fabulous weekend here. It is beautiful spot and very eco friendly (also within walking distance to a pub!) The cabin itself is very cosy, very well appointed and very comfortable and full of characteer. It is the perfect hideaway. I would highly recommend this place.

What a beautiful retreat in the Devon countryside! We barely left the cabin for 5 days - just enjoyed reading in the hammock, chatting around the fire and watching the wildlife. Jo is a great host, and is really knowledgeable about the local area. The cabin has SUPER comfy beds, and is well stocked with all the essentials. The cabin was set up perfectly for both sunny and rainy days :)

my friend has had a very rough time recently and her little dog is recovering from an operation to remove a cancerous growth so we were looking for a place with complete peace and quiet for a couple of days.the cabin was just perfect.jo the host made us very welcome.the cabin is an eco one with solar powered electricity.no flush toilets.solid waste is composted and wee is filtered through reed beds, purified and returned to nature.situated not far from Dartmoor national park it is in a perfect position.we went to meldon and had a beautiful walk to the quarry pools where my friend and her dog had a lovely swim.we followed this with lunch by the river in tavistock.the following day we went to becky falls and had a lovely walk in an ancient woodland park followed by lunch in widecombe-in-the-moor.in the evening we finished off our stay by having a Swedish massage on the terrace at the cabin by a nice lady called Karen.jo can arrange this.a wonderful ,wonderful place to stay.if you have a dog who likes playing in water then Dartmoor is just doggie heaven.if you are looking for a place to get away from it all then this is the place for you.highly recommended.

We had an amazing time. Completely cut off from WiFi and mobile signal ensured that we had to stop and take in the world around us. The cabin is charming and everything you need is there. The dry loo is a bit of an experience!! The location is great for exploring the local area. We went to Bude for the day. The local produce supplied by Jo was amazing - the lemon drizzle is a must. We would def recommend the Carpenter Cabin for a relaxing couple of days.

To say I had a good time at the Dens would be an understatement. Bonnie, the dog, and I had the most wonderful time and already can’t wait to get back there. The space was immaculate and equally cozy as it was comfy. The property was peaceful and had so many edible things growing in it. The hosts were so much fun to chat with and beyond accommodating. They made sure I had enough meat, bread, milk, vegetables, drink and everything else I could possibly need to last me the week. I wish we could live there and are already looking forward to our return.

It was absolutely perfect. What a beautiful spot, incredible craftsmanship, wonderful hosts.

We had a fabulous stay in Carpenter Cabin. The location is idyllic and the cabin is a truly amazing piece of craftsmanship. The place was spotless and well stocked with some basic essentials and some amazing local produce (eggs and milk). We used the cabin for a base to visit the beach and surrounding attractions. We were fortunate with the weather so had a bbq every day.

If anyone is thinking about what life might be like living off grid in a small space, then give this a go! The previous guests to us actually bought a similar cabin from Jo and Ben to live in themselves, and having spent a couple of nights here, I can totally see why... This is such a lovely, light filled little cabin home, that guests will love as much as we did. Be warned, you'll start to look at your own home in a different way!

We had a lovely stay at Devon Dens, the cabin is amazing. It’s beautifully built and really well equipped. Our 6 year old loved his mezzanine bedroom and exploring the site.

We stayed Monday to Friday at Carpenters Cabin and had a very nice restful stay. Jo was very informative and helpful. The cabin was very cosy with a great wood burner and plenty of books games and puzzles to do if you forget to take your own. Thank you Jo for a good break.

The most perfect place for a relaxing and enjoyable break!Words and photos don't do this place justice. So peaceful with nothing but the sounds of nature all around! The cabin has all the amenities you need so you get a great combination of an escape from the hustle bustle of life whilst still being comfortable!great base for exploring nearby places such as Dartmoor and Bude; excellent for dog walks! The owners were so pleasant and helpful and cannot fault them or the place in any way. Will definitely return!
