Overview
From the doorstep, the Lake District stretches out invitingly for miles. When it’s clear you can see the Duddon Estuary, Coniston Old Man and even the Irish Sea, with all of them easily explored on long days of adventure. Closer to home, there are trails through the woods and fields, across the rippling beck to stunning viewpoints, with wildlife to spot around you every step of the way, from foxes, hares and deer among the trees to the incredible array of birds. There’s even a kestrel that sometimes makes her home in the barn’s high window ledges. You’ll probably meet the local Herdwick sheep too, who sometimes come up to nose around the farmhouse and two barns at the site, and are occasionally tended to by the farmer in the sheep pen opposite.
The location alone would make this 17th-century barn an incredible place, but the owner has worked wonders with the barn, preserving its character while adding touches of luxury and taking every care to make the place sustainable and low impact. The fantastic double heighted space works beautifully, framing the open-plan area split into kitchen and lounge. At one end, sofas and armchairs are gathered round the wood burner, perfect for raiding the board games cupboard for a bit of Lake District Monopoly. At the other is the kitchen with its large table for friends and family to gather round. There are induction hobs and an electric oven so you can cook up a storm, but the real joy for chefs is outside. There is a fire pit with griddles, a tripod, cast iron cooking pots, a paella pan and an outdoor cookbook to tempt you into wild culinary endeavours, with the farm shop in Broughton-in-Furness perfect for sourcing local ingredients. And if it all goes wrong, then a twenty-minute walk will take you to the local pub, where you can have a pint or two and a less wild but equally delicious meal before you head back to the cosy surroundings of the barn.

Meet Jess and Tim
Jess, who grew up on a farm close by, Tim and their family have lovingly spent time converting this old traditional lakes barn that dates back to between the late 16th and early 17th century that was part of the Furness Abbey Estate. It was important that they didn’t spoil the character, or the landscape of the old barn and that it is as environmentally friendly and sustainable as possible. Using local products and craftsmen they have managed to create a beautiful and luxurious space in a breath-taking location that is totally off the beaten track.
The barn is nestled up on the hillside with a stream nearby, giving incredible views of one of the most picturesque places in the Lake District National Park, spanning over the Duddon Estuary and Irish Sea, as well as the Cumbrian hills and mountains.
Wildlife & the environment
Guests can expect to see foxes, red squirrels, hares, badgers. There is an enormous variety of birds that visit the valley and surrounding area especially in the oak coppice, which has seen the buzzards, take as their home last year. Sometimes the kestrel makes her summer nest in the barns high window ledges, so please look out for her in nesting season. They also have a resident pair of greater spotted woodpeckers, chaffinch, blue tit, great tit, yellowhammer, greenfinch, goldfinch, siskin, wagtails, wrens and robins and nuthatches on occasion. There are also swallows that occasionally visit from the nearby barns where they nest, owls and often the sparrowhawk and an occasional osprey.
Carter Ground sits in The Lake District National Park UNESCO Heritage site.

This was a great vacation, the views from the property were absolutely stunning, everything we needed was in the barn and we could not ask for more. The hosts Jess and Tim were great hosts. It was lovely to return after some stunning local walks to a roaring log fire to end a pefect day. The recommended local pubs were great and the locals were very friendly.

We did quite a last minute winter break after finishing long (not so fun) jobs and the ravens crag barn couldn’t have been more perfect. Tucked away in the lake district, a good distance to any of the towns so we really felt like we were in our own little bubble (but close enough to get supplies when needed). We were surrounded by beautiful rolling hills, amazing wildlife and endless options to explore outside. The barn has been done up to a really high (but still feels charmingly rustic) way. In the evening we had the log burner roaring while tucking away champagne and cider, playing dominos. The hosts left a really clear and helpful booklet with all sorts of troubleshooting for the barn and knowledge about the area. This was the perfect base for our stay in the lakes.
13/01/2025Will
If you want a classic Lake District experience this place ticks every box, sheep coming right up to the door to say hello, valley views from the window, fell walks right from the space. We loved heading out on winter hikes then getting back to light the big fire and read our books. There's a really great 17th century pub a 20 minute walk away that serves good pub food, local ales and had three fires on the go.

We had the most restful, peaceful few days at Raven’s Crag. The accommodation was very cosy, comfortable & well equipped. The views from the barn are stunning & there were walls on our doorstep. We didn’t use the car for 2 days! The owners have thought of everything & they were so kind & thoughtful before our stay & when we arrived. ! There was even a Christmas tree to help us get into the Christmas spirit. I would definitely stay here again.
09/12/2024Ruth
Beautiful stay in a beautiful place. We totally fell in love with Raven's Crag - roaring fire and the Lake District accessible from your door. Amazing. The owners have thought of everything. Highly recommend.

Our mini break at Ravens Crag can only be described as wonderful. Jess has thought of everything to make her guests welcome and comfortable. An amazing location, superb local pub full of friendly people, we will certainly be coming back as soon as we can. We were overjoyed by the whole experience, well done Jess!

We had a wonderful stay at Raven‘s Crag. The setting and view are spectacular, and we were lucky to have experienced both very rough and very beautiful weather in the 4 days of our stay. The barn itself has been renovated as a living space with a lot of attention to details, and great taste and sensitivity. Beautifully done. The hosts where super friendly and kind, and available when needed. We had some great walks, days in the sun and evenings at the fireplace.

Fantastic converted old farm barn in the middle of the Lakes. We had a wonderful time with our 3 children. Jessica and Tim were grate hosts and went out their way to help us with all our questions and more. I would 100% book this place again as I would love to explore the local area more. Maybe next time
12/08/2024Joanna
It was a fabulous stay at Raven’s Crag. As my tween said it was really good, the beds were comfortable, she asked if we could stay forever and that is high praise as she is not easily impressed! The barn doors with views over the Duddon Estuary is fabulous. It’s so well equipped there was nothing wanting. We loved it. Great walking from the doorstep and great gastropub nearby. Thank you.
25/03/2024Catherine
Stunning location! Such a beautiful stay with everything you need in a cozy barn. Lovely pub close by, within walking distance and Coniston a short drive away.
15/12/2023Andrea
Amazing stay at this beautiful converted barn surrounded by sheep and views of the mountains all the way till the Duddon estuary. A bridleway goes immediately from the barn up into the higher mountains with breathtaking walking possibilities all around. The barn itself was perfect with a well equipped kitchen and very good bed(s). Outside was a nice fire pit for barbecues and a nice picnic table. The closest pub The Blacksmith Arms has the most amazing food we tasted in the Lake District.
04/09/2023Ronald
We came to Ravens Crag for our mini moon straight after our wedding. It was the perfect place to relax and unwind in a stunning location nestled in a valley, surrounded by sheep and lambs. It is just so peaceful. The barn was so cosy and had everything we needed, making the perfect base for hikes in the local area and further afield in the Lake District. We really enjoyed making dinner on the camp fire outside and going out for a tasty meal at the local pub. We really have had the best trip ever and would return without hesitation! Thank you so much!
26/06/2023Elizabeth
Wonderful relaxing weekend
23/06/2023Emma
Lovely house in an amazing location - has everything you need.
09/04/2023Oscar
Raven's Crag is a lovely place to escape too. Its warm and cosy and nothing beats waking up to the view of the Herdwick Sheep. It is also a great base to explore local walks and the 'Old Man of Coniston' is only down the road. Raven's Crag has a lovely kitchen and everything you need to cook. The wood burner keeps the place warm and cosy and there are lots of cosy chairs to choose from. The bed is super comfy, there are maps and board games and a lovely big table to play them on. We didn't seen anyone at the farm, so it really felt like our own private escape.
30/12/2022Hannah
Beautiful, private barn surrounded by lovely views. Lovely interior fully equipped with everything you need. Loads of local walks. Loved the peace and quiet.
11/11/2022Victoria
Had a glorious stay. Despite filthy weather. It was beautiful. Amazing location, well equipped, we made it warm and cosy. A real escape from normal life nestled in the hills in a remote part of the Lake District.
07/11/2022Samantha
A fantastic place. I liked the fact that we didn’t have much contact with the owners as it gave the place even more of a sense of remoteness which I liked.
21/10/2022Brian
Excellent! We loved Raven’s Crag! It’s in a great remote location that feels truly isolated from the outside world. That’s not to say it’s disconnected, as it has all the usual modern features inside the barn, as well as the occasional people walking past. The circular trails that start just up the path from the barn, made for an excellent first day out that meant we didn’t need to drive anywhere to start our adventure. We would happily stay again!
12/05/2022Joe
Absolutely heavenly to arrive to the peace and quiet and stunningly beautiful surroundings at Ravens Crag. Very comfortable and characterful barn conversion. So many thoughtful touches, very well equipped, great outdoor space. Jessica ordered us a super breakfast hamper and left some lovely welcome gifts. So relaxing to sit outdoors for breakfast listening to birdsong, dozing in camping chair in the sun trap at side of the barn ( in March, it was 7C!), watching the Herdwick sheep, sitting with home baked bread, local cheese and a glass of red wine in front of the log fire - we had a fabulous stay. Lots to visit in the local area, great walks nearby. Slept like a log every night and loved wakening to see blue sky and the fell through our skylight window. Excellent nearby pub for dinner. We enjoyed visits around Coniston and Ulverston and beach walk at Sandscale Hawes. Jessica provided loads of very helpful information about the barn and the area.

A lovely cabin/barn, nicely decorated with lovely furnishings. Our stay was disrupted by poor weather. The power went early on during our stay which knocked out the water supply and this never returned. The host was very accommodating and made our stay as relaxing as possible. For something out of their control this was very much appreciated. We wish we could have experienced in how we planned but none the less it was a good trip for different reasons.

Amazing experience at Raven's crag. lovely place to stay, very cozy. loved that it had allocated parking!

A amazing little get away for our mini moon straight after the wedding where a lot of chill was definitely required. The beauty of the barn is that it still looks like a ordinary barn just dotted into the landscape, no tv , log fire and a book shelf create everything you need to switch off. The facilities where top notch and the hamper was next level. We usually go to the lakes often but not as far south in the district but wow what a amazing location and amazing stay.

The owner Jessica came to meet us on our arrival. On the very hot and sunny day, they've thoughtfully left the entrance opened to ventilate the place before we came and got some welcoming gifts ready for us. It was secluded which was exactly what we wanted. Throughout our stay at the Raven’s and around the lakes ppl had been very friendly, something we didn't quite notice in all our previous trips to the Lakes, pre-covid. If I were describe Raven’s Crag in one word, it's "Perfection". And if in more words, it's class and thoughtfulness, meets comfort and cleanliness. It's the kind of place you'd dream of living in, maybe more. Thanks to Jessica and Tim for having us. It's the kind of break we desperately needed.

This was one of our best holiday rental experiences ever. The barn is gorgeous, cosy and modern with all the appliances you would need for a very comfortable stay. The shower is great, the beds and sofas are comfortable and the kitchen is well equipped. We really enjoyed the wood burner in the lounge area, which despite our lack of experience using one before, was very simple to use and brought warmth and charm to the place. In addition, there is a fire pit outside and all the equipment you will need to cook a lovely bonfire meal. We were looking forward to a break from the city and we were not disappointed. The barn is located in a beautiful field with a view facing the green hills and mountains. There are even some sheep roaming around. It is close to the "Old Man of Coniston" - a nice 6 mile hike that you can start from the house without needing to drive. It's about a 30 min drive to "Coniston Water" a beautiful scenic route. We would strongly recommend the hike from "Tarn Hows" which is not far from "Coniston Water" and the route can be found on the OS maps App (adaptable to all levels). For food, we would recommend bringing some of your own or you can order an online shop to be delivered. Make sure you stop by the "Blacksmiths Arms" pub who serve delicious traditional food (best lamb Henry!). You will need to book a table in advance as they are very popular and you don't want to miss out. Jess and Tim were brilliant hosts. We didn't meet them, but they gave us all the information we needed and were quick to respond. We also appreciated that all of the provided toiletries and cleaning products were eco-friendly. We look forward to our next stay there and we have already recommended the place to all of our friends!

We wound through the narrow lanes passing through villages and a tempting looking local pub (The Blacksmith Arms), greeted by the open fells as we reached the farm. The little stone bothy stood, full of history, surrounded by friendly Herdwick sheep and a few neighbouring properties. Inside we were welcomed by a cosy contemporary but characterful nest, perfect to hunker down in front of the stove after a walk in the rain spilling out into the garden and fells beyond, with a firepit perfectly situated to cook up a feast and watch the stars come out to play at night.

We were looking for somewhere to stay in the lake district and Raven's Crag fitted the bill perfectly, out of the way of the normal hustle and bustle with wonderful views. There are amazing walks from the barn and onto the fells with views across to the old man of Coniston, Scafell and the sea. We wanted for nothing at the amazingly well equipped barn and paid a little extra for the hampers full of fresh produce and local meats which didn't"t disapoint and kept us fed all weekend!

Thank you.

Stunning location! Such a beautiful stay with everything you need in a cozy barn. Lovely pub close by, within walking distance and Coniston a short drive away.

Had a glorious stay. Despite filthy weather. It was beautiful. Amazing location, well equipped, we made it warm and cosy. A real escape from normal life nestled in the hills in a remote part of the Lake District.

A fantastic place. I liked the fact that we didn’t have much contact with the owners as it gave the place even more of a sense of remoteness which I liked.
