Overview
The cabins at Birkett Mire are nestled deep the heart of the Lake District and offer the perfect luxurious base to explore the National Park. Slip on a soft bathrobe and cosy up with a good book in your gorgeous bespoke cabin, hut, cleverly constructed from locally sawn timber and even some old lambing pens by owner Luke and his brother Jack. Stay warm with instant heating and the boost of the hobbit wood-burner should you need it. The kitchen has a smart gas hob, a proper kettle and toaster and you’re left tea, coffee from the local roaster (Carvetii) a jar of milk and home-baked cookies to get you started. Take a gentle stroll down the old railway line into Threlkeld and Keswick, a mile or so away. In the village you’ll find The Horse and Farrier, where you can enjoy local ales, spirits from the nearby distillery and hearty meals of locally-sourced pub classics. Drive 15-minutes to Grasmere for the family-owned, cow-themed restaurant The Jumble Room.
Start your day sipping tea in a supremely comfortable King sized bed with a grand view of Blencathra before choosing a warming climb to embark on. Choose from Blencathra and Skiddaw to the north or Helvellyn to the south and return to bubble your limbs into comfort again in the wood-burning hot tub while you marvel at the stunning views. Buzzards soar overhead, clouds scudder over green fields and hills, you’ll feel very far away from city cares and there are wild swimming spots nearby (two rivers and, of course, plenty of lakes) if you want some cold-water therapy. As night falls you’ll feel content lighting the fire pit and sizzling something warming and nutritious over the barbecue. There is little or no light pollution so on cloudless nights you can watch the stars pop up one by one.
Experience the joy of e-biking this summer! From 15th July - 16th September, Birkett Mire will be offering two e-bikes for hire and is also part of our Green Travel collection. Meet Luke, Wendy, Ellie and Jack
The Birkett family has farmed on these hills for generations. Eldest son Luke is the craftsman who has handmade each of the luxury hideaways. Daughter Ellie is the baker responsible for fresh farmhouse treats you will find inside your accommodation on arrival. The youngest son Jack is on hand to make sure there’s plenty of wood for the log burning stove and the hot tub. Finally, you will see the loving crafted finishing touches throughout the cabins, put in place by Mum Wendy.
The Birkett’s are traditional Lake District sheep farmers and their flock of 350 fell sheep spend most of the year roaming free on the side of Clough Head. When they come home to lamb - from March to May – you might see their Swaledale ewes and lambs close by. Their friendly herd of Belted Galloway cattle slowly roam around the fields beside the farmhouse, setting the pace of life for visitors. These girls, gentle in nature and clearly marked with a wide white band around their middle, enjoy the lush green pastures of Birkett Mire.
Wildlife & the environment
Birkett Mire is located in the heart of the Lake District National Park which has recently become a World Heritage Site. Throughout the grounds of Birkett Mire guests can expect to see foxes, red squirrels, hares, badgers, owls, buzzards, kestrels, salmon, trout and the occasional osprey.

We had such a perfect holiday staying in The Fawn and did not want to leave! The attention to detail within the cabin was superb and made up feel like we were staying at a luxury 5* hotel. The cabin was well equipped with everything needed for our stay, and the fresh linens and extra wood provided half way through our stay were very much appreciated and added to the luxurious feel to our stay. The picturesque location of The Fawn was simply breathtaking, and we enjoyed our evenings either sat around the fire pit or in the hot tub admiring the view. We are already planning out next holiday to go back and stay at The Fawn as we loved it so much!

It was the most amazing place to stay in the Lake District! With beautiful views, relaxing environment & the most incredible lodge with hot tub! Overall, it was a magical place to stay! Highly recommend!

We spent a wonderful two nights at The Fawn. The place was spotless and the facilities were well-maintained. The extra special goodies (cookies, Prosecco etc) were a very thoughtful touch. We particularly enjoyed using the wood-fired hot tub and the fire pit! We are looking forward to returning soon!

We had an absolutely wonderful stay at The Fawn. Booked after needing a getaway from busy city life The Fawn certainly delivered! The cabin was immaculately clean and the bed so comfy! I especially loved the personal touch of presseco and glasses waiting for us when we arrived. Staying in march I was worried about being cold but with the inside fire burner we were so cozy. The cabin is a short walk from the Keswick railway trail which was stunning and suitable for everyone. We opened the door one morning to find two very well mannered sheep dogs waiting for some pets which obviously we obliged in giving. Overall a beautiful cabin in stunning location and would definitely come back to and recommend to friends and family.

We had a glorious stay at The Fawn. The cabin was beautifully presented with everything we needed for our short stay including tea/coffee and chocolate cookies! The view was amazing and even though there were a few other cabins we still felt completely secluded and had plenty of privacy to enjoy the hot tub in peace.

The most beautiful setting and perfect stay. The host met us as we arrived and was so warm and welcoming, offering us some advice on the local area. They’d also noted it was my Partners 30th when I booked and put up balloons along with a little treat - wasn’t expected and was so thoughtful! The cabin was perfect, beautifully done with all the right amenities. The hot tub was fantastic too - a real labour of love to get it going in the rain but it was totally worth it! We’ll definitely be back!

We stayed at The Fawn for 3 nights. It was the perfect base to explore the Lake District from. The views from The Fawn were incredible, the bed was comfortable, the kitchen had everything we needed, it was clean and the hosts were really friendly. We really enjoyed the wood fire hot tub, it was just what we needed after climbing Scarfell Pike!

Had a lovely stay at The Fawn. We were welcomed by the host who was very helpful and provided some good recommendations. On arrival at the cabin it was kitted out with balloons and prosecco, having noted it was a birthday celebration, which was a very thoughtful touch. The cabin was spotlessly clean and had all the conveniences we could have wanted. A wonderfully peaceful location and the hot tub was fantastic. Despite poor weather it was very cozy in the cabin and we made use of the outside space where we could. Can't wait to return.
27/06/2022Rupert
Very enjoyable, views were amazing from the cabin, you don’t really have to leave your cabin you can just sit outside and admire the view all day, good location very close to Keswick and surrounding towns, but still in the middle of no where how good!
10/06/2022Henry
The Fawn is a wonderful place to stay! Really helpful, kind and welcoming hosts. Beautiful cabin with stunning views out of the window. Really comfy bed, and lovely touches with the local toiletries etc. Amazing shower. Would 100% recommend to others.

Lovely break away and opportunity to unplug. The hosts were very helpful answering any queries we had. The cabin was indeed cozy and spotlessly clean above all else. Fantastic location. Once we got the hang of heating up the hot-tub- it was perfect!
04/05/2022T
We came here on our mini moon and was not disappointed. The views are amazing, we were lucky enough to come in lambing season so got to see all the little lambs in the morning and night! The hosts were lovely and nothing was too much trouble, we had trouble with the outside wood fire but jack came and helped us get it started and came back to check on it as well. We are definitely coming back for our anniversary sometime

We had such a lovely break at the Fawn. The cabin was cosy and beautiful, it was very relaxing. The views were stunning and in a brilliant location. We loved the little touches of prosecco and yummy cookies! Jack and Luke are very friendly and so are their lovely dogs. We can’t wait to visit again soon!
28/01/2022Rebecca
We truly enjoyed our stay at the Fawn. The cabin was beautifully designed with a rustic and homely feel (which felt even more cozy with the snow outside). We woke from the very comfortable king sized bed to overlook the stunning landscape from the window facing us. The owners were extremely helpful and went out of their way to ensure our stay was as good as it could be without encroaching privacy. They provided extra wood supplies for the log burner when we were running low, kindly lit the fire for our hot tub while we were out and thoughtfully decorated the cabin on arrival for my boyfriends birthday. The location is perfect for a peaceful and secluded stay, with a pleasant pub in walking distance. You have everything you would need!
07/01/2022Christina
We had such a lovely break at In The Vale. This was our post wedding uk break. Brilliant location waking up at the foot of Blencathra, with Keswick just 10 mins drive away. Bottle of bubbles on arrival and a little bottle of milk to make a cuppa to have with the cookies supplied We got a change of towels and restock of logs. Plus some extra cookies! Even when we mentioned we were planning to climb Scafell Pike, the log fired bath was ready for us when when we returned. Nothing was too much trouble and we didn’t feel encroached on or visa Versa.
29/10/2021Sian
We had the most perfect stay from start to finish. In the vale had considered every aspect of hospitality and every small detail was thought out. We enjoyed the hot tub under the stars, a comfy and restful nights sleep, pampering with lovely products and excellent ‘on the house’ gifts on arrival including Prosecco and cookies. We enjoyed every minute of our stay, we will most definitely return.
25/10/2021Alice
We really enjoyed our stay at The Fawn. It's a unique experience! We found it comfortable and cosy and the views were breathtaking.
20/10/2021Hannah
Our stay at the Fawn was lovely. When we arrived we were treated to a bottle of Prosecco and staff had kindly lit the fire for our hot tub outside so it was ready for us. Everyone was really welcoming, the dogs on site were friendly and happy to come over.

What an amazing place to stay! absolutely amazing views, well kitted out, very clean and the hot tub was a great to chill out in the evening. The little touches including the prosecco, cookies and cards are so lovely. the shower was perfect! The bed was extremely comfy and was lovely to wake up with a cuppa looking out of the window at the bottom of the bed. All in all i would 100% recommend this to everyone and we will definitely be booking again. I loved the location so much that I actually proposed to my now Fiancée at the cabin during our stay.
11/10/2021samuel
We had a fantastic couple of days at the Fawn on the last leg of our honeymoon! The team arranged a wonderful welcome for us will balloons, banners, champagne and chocolates, so special! The cabin itself is finished to a high standard, even though it's a compact space, it has been maximised excellently and looks great. The bed was the most comfortable we'd had in the two weeks of our honeymoon and we slept so well. The hot tub was nice and easy to use and the views from that and the decking are phenomenal. Jack was great, very friendly and helpful and help to cement another stay in the future! Can't wait to return

Gorgeous, well presented cabin on a working farm with great facilities, including a wood fired hot tub, bbq, decent sized fridge & ice box. The fawn felt super remote and peaceful all day & night. Would 100% recommend.

Stunning location, amazing cabin and all you could want for a short break away

The best cabin stay we have done and we’ve done a few. All the small touches made it the perfect stay. Perfect location, enough privacy and beautiful surroundings. watching the animals graze with the beautiful background of the mountains. Warm cosy cabin with heating available and a beautiful hot shower. Bathroom done to a high standard. Perfect forest get away that felt as though you were within nature but had all your luxuries with you. Little touches like dressing gowns for the hot tub made it perfect. Down to the cups and plates available to use in the cabin, everything was thought out perfectly and done to a high standard. Comfiest bed and beautiful decor within in the cabin.

We're super excited to be adding Luke's latest space. A wonderful addition to the collection. The feedback for The Stag should give you a good feel for what it will be like. Book a stay and be the first to write a review!

Beautiful place. Really comfortable and peaceful. Finished with a great deal of thought and style. Amazing views of Blencathra - great for a hike - and easy to walk to a good pub in Threlkeld

I have honestly never in My life been to such a beautiful scenic place .... with the most attentive hosts NOTHING is to much bother.. before we came communication between myself and the hosts was unreal they organised the cabin to be decorated and a bottle of champagne on arrival as they told some very special places to propose before coming back to a perfectly decorated room ....... honestly 5 star is not enough 10 stars for everything location .... service .... hosts ... accommodation... hot tub you need not want for anything words are are not enough gratitude and praise will return several times to try each cabin

Just got home from an amazing 5 nights at the Fawn. The perfect location overlooking the stunning hills and farmland. The hosts couldn't do enough- so helpful and friendly. It was our mini moon and we were greeting with a bottle of fizz, balloon and home baked cookies. The hut itself was spotless and done to a have high standard. Couldn't fault it!

This stay was absolutely incredible, the smallest details did not go unnoticed. The cabin was beautiful and the views were some of the best in the lakes.

We had a wonderful, tranquil few days in the lakes, staying at The Fawn near Threllkeld. Wendy was a lovely friendly host with fantastic recommendations for places to eat and drink and the cabin was perfectly located for all our needs. We would highly recommend this stay for anyone looking for beautiful views, great walks and a little R&R.

Absolutely stunning. I have zero criticism. From the welcome, the accomodation, the cleanliness, the glorious views and the hot tub and prosecco combination, it was an incredible short break.

This is our second stay at The Fawn. We first went in Winter, which was just lovely and wanted to return to experience the setting in the summer too. It was simply lovely. A warm welcome awaits you, the cabins are spotless and the location is excellent.

Very enjoyable, views were amazing from the cabin, you don’t really have to leave your cabin you can just sit outside and admire the view all day, good location very close to Keswick and surrounding towns, but still in the middle of no where how good!

What a place! Stunning location, beautifully crafted cabin and breathtaking scenery! Everything about the fawn was spot on down to the finest details. My wife and I made the long trip up from Bournemouth for a long weekend and we where not disappointed. Our hosts Wendy, Luke, Ellie and Jack are excellent hosts and a lovely family and couldn't do enough for us. The views where amazing from our cabin at all angles. We can't wait to go back! Thank you Carl and Kelli
