Overview
If epic sea views and stargazing are on the top of your list then The Observatory should be too. The Observatory overlooks its quarter of an acre garden with a wildflower meadow and fire pit. A pair of chairs are perfectly placed to sit with a glass of wine whilst watching the sun sink down into the ocean. The only light pollution here comes from a few passing ships or the lighthouses of Wolf Rock and Tater Dhu way off on the horizon. The Milky Way and shooting stars can be seen with the naked eye and there’s a telescope too.
You can even see the ocean from your bed! An kingsized bed at that. A thick, double-sided curtain divides the bedroom from the living room, but you may wish to keep it open and watch the embers die down on the log burner. The comfy grey sofa sits beside the woodburner, with a TV and another ocean viewing window (nature’s TV!). Well-thumbed novels and a Goldeneye Guide to Cornwall are yours to leaf through. More sea views from the kitchen too.
Put on your own play at Halzephron House's very own open air cliffside amphitheatre, with only your partner to watch... If you go for a little wander you’ll find the secret garden overlooking the cove below. From here you can see all the way to St Michaels’ Mount on a clear day! There's even a rumoured smugglers' tunnel up from the cove... all you need is a dog called Timmy, a mystery to solve and lashings of ginger beer. For more sea and golden sand, Halzephron is a perfect launch pad for miles of secluded beaches and a selection of local fishing villages that offer delicious, fresh seafood. You may also have seen The Observatory featured on Escape to the Country!

Meet your hosts
Meet Sean & Alex
Sean and Alex took over as the owners of Halzephron House in 2020. They are passionate about the Cornish coast, and love sharing it with their guests.
Wildlife & Environment
Right on the Cornish Coastal path, choughs, ravens, peregrine falcons, kestrels and buzzards have all been seen here. The coastal wildflower meadows are home to butterflies, bees and grasshoppers. From your ‘secret garden’ hidden on the cliff, you can look down over Halzephron Cove - if you’re lucky you might spot the resident seal, and even dolphins on a calm day. Be warned though - it’s a definite climb down to the Cove below, not a walk. Halzephron’s four acres are bordered by SSSI cliffs in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with the National Trust for neighbours.
All three spaces at Halzephron House are powered by solar panels, meaning the energy used will be almost completely generated on site.

Amazing location. Coast path is 20 metres away. Beautiful inside. Well equipped.

Amazing location and accommodation!

We had a perfect summer holiday at The Observatory! It was magical to be able to walk straight from our garden onto the coastal path with beautiful beaches to discover in both directions. We spent warm evenings BBQing fresh mackerel under the star scattered sky and soggier evenings cosied up under the blankets. It's really special place.
23/07/2024Ruth, Canopy & Stars
The Halzepron house is in an ideal, idyllic place, just by the beautiful cliffs, this is why we went there again.
24/06/2024Wieslaw
This was Our second stay here and we absolutely love it. Right by the sea with some amazing beaches and walks nearby. During our stay we explored the area and surroundings and visited a few different places. The weather was lovely with one very stormy day
10/06/2024Rachel
Fantastic. Just what we hoped for.
30/05/2024William
We loved our stay at The Observatory! The cabin was charming, made even more so with its fantastic location overlooking the sea and instant access onto the southwest coast path. It was also wonderful to have our own fenced garden, so we could relax outside with our dog.
20/05/2024Zoe
Beautiful, intimate, clean and superbly located place right by the sea. Own access to coastal walk right through a private garden. Cosy wood burner, welcome cider chilling in the fridge. A wonderful break
26/04/2024Jennifer
Our stay with Halzephron was just perfect. It was the perfect base to explore Cornwall from with our dog. The facilities inside the observatory are great and practical, delivered with boho charm. Access was quick and easy and everything worked flawlessly throughout. We were celebrating a special occasion and they went above and beyond to help us enjoy it. Thanks so much - we will definitely return.
08/02/2024Will
Our stay at the Observatory was fantastic, the cabin was beautifully decorated with all the facilities you would need for your stay, from every part of the cabin there is extensive sea views and also the bed looks out over the sea as well. It comes with its own private garden and outdoor seating area for two. as soon as you walk out of the side gate it takes you to the top of the cliffs with an exquisite view of the cove below. There is a path that leads all the way around the coastline from just outside the cabin too so is great if you fancy a nice walk with picturesque views. If visiting I would highly recommend reading the information cards in the room as they give all the best places to visit. Check in here is self service via a keybox to which the code is emailed to you 24hrs prior to your check in time which is very handy if you are arriving late like we did.

We had a lovely stay at The Observatory! The place itself is cosy, clean, comfortable and has everything you need. Communication with the hosts was excellent and check in/out was easy. The views are breathtaking and it’s the perfect base to explore from! It’s incredibly peaceful and secluded. Very dog friendly. We spent our days at the beach and going for long walks. Our nights were spent stargazing and warming up by the fire. Would love to come back!
12/12/2023Belinda
We had a FANTASTIC honeymoon at The Observatory. The location and views were phenomenal. We could get out onto the coastal path for runs/walks from the backyard and then snuggle up and watch the storms roll in over the horizon from the sofa. Was an excellent base for exploring Cornwall - in particular Porthleven, St Ives, Mousehole, Coverack, Port Isaac and Padstow. Accommodation was very clean and really well equipped with high quality utensils and appliances, all the essentials needed for cooking were provided. Very generous with the wood supply, meaning we could stay warm in stormy November and enjoy the log burner without worrying about running out of logs. Excellent wifi signal and connection. Clear advice given from owners, straightforward check in and check out process. Would highly recommend!!
03/11/2023Emily
The Observatory was just what we needed, peaceful, tucked away a place to feel part of your surroundings. The owners were very generous leaving us some local cider cooling in the fridge and home made muesli for breakfast. Our dogs were also well catered for, dog bowls and balls for their amusement and the garden was well fenced so they were safe. The kitchen was well equipped and the shower was good and strong(fluffy towels too). We are already planning to go back and explore more. The location was perfect for walking the coastal path and getting down to the beach. There was a good local pub within walking distance.
06/10/2023Kathryn
It was simply perfect. Very comfortable, quiet and everything it portrayed in the advertisement of the property
25/09/2023Theresa
A lovely escape from daily life in the run up to the arrival of our baby. The quiet crashing of waves below at the bottom of the cliffs was so soothing. The Observatory is a lovely intimate little hideaway with the loveliest views of south Cornwall's coastline. Very special.
23/06/2023Robert
Perfect little hideaway in the most beautiful location. The Observatory has everything you need, comfortable bed, lovely bathroom and kitchen and a beautiful view.
15/05/2023Scarlet
We stayed at The Observatory last year, and we loved it so much that we came back again! The space is perfect, waking up to the gorgeous sea view is so relaxing, and with the coastal path at the bottom of the garden we were able to do some lovely walks.
24/04/2023Charlotte & Nathan
Stayed here for a few nights for my partners belated 40th. We absolutely loved it here and so did our two daschund pups. Absolutely beautiful observatory and perfect location, we will definetaly be returning.
21/04/2023Rachel
Wonderful stay. A very special place we love coming back to. Replenishing in every way. Particular highlights are the seals at the bottom of the garden, the costal walks and the big roaring fire. Was touched by the happy birthday decoration and cava - thank you!
06/03/2023Emma
Fantastic location, very cosy house with lovely log burner. Perfect for walking the coast path as it was only 15 metres away!
03/02/2023Sara
We absolutely loved our stay at The Observatory. The location is beautiful and every detail had been thought about. Our black lab absolutely loved it too!
02/01/2023Melanie
A very relaxing, calm and peaceful stay (although with 40-50mph winds outside), made even more cosier by the weather.
31/12/2022Madison
Totally beautiful little cabin. Just perfect for our base for a weekend of exploring
16/12/2022Charlotte
A beautiful and well designed cabin, in a gorgeous spot on the south west coast path. It felt like entering a bubble for the weekend, away from the real world. The perfect place to rest and reset!
11/11/2022Emma
Our 4th stay in this fantastic spot with fabulous uninterrupted sea views. Beautiful private garden with direct access to coast path & lovely walk to Church Cove beach. The accommodation is simple but has everything you need and is very comfortable.
22/07/2022Richard
The Observatory at Halzephron is a magical place, as always. This was our third stay there in six years, and hopefully it won't be our last. We didn't meet the new owners Alex and Sean unfortunately as they were away, but they're keeping the place up well. The situation is most of what the Observatory is about, on the top of a 200m cliff with views of the horizon over Mount's Bay, and a big garden surrounded by wildflower meadow, and full of birds. And we had very good weather (again). And it's 15 minutes walk (a really lovely walk) down to the nearby beaches at Church Cove, where we swam, read in the sun, drank coffee (there's a National Trust coffee shop 7 days a week in season). And it's right on the coast path, so you can walk 90 minutes one way to Porthleven and a whole day if you want in the other to Lizard Point. The house is very comfortable, and well thought out in terms of the amount of furniture. So far it's still very much in the character that Lucy Thorpe the previous owner left it, so nicely artsy-crafty and a bit boho.
10/06/2022Joe
We had the most magical stay at The Observatory, no photo could ever do the gorgeous sea view justice. We were lucky enough to stay on a week where there were endless beautiful sunsets which could be seen from the space, or by taking a 5 minute stroll down the coastal path to the beach. We already want to go back!!
25/04/2022Charlotte
This was our second stay in The Observatory. It is a fantastic location, with direct access to the South West Coast Path, beautiful views and a lovely cosy space for the evenings. The space is well set up as a base for walking, day trips along the coast and wonderful local beaches. We particularly loved that you can travel on foot to many destinations along the coastal path and would really recommend the space for keen walkers. Communication with the owners was clear and we enjoyed the cider that was left as a welcome drink in the fridge.
11/04/2022Alexa
Relaxing break in a quiet location with super views
18/03/2022Shaun
The most beautiful place to hide away from wild and windy weather and the perfect base from which to explore the coastal paths and local pubs. Everything is comfortable, convenient and well designed at the Observatory- and feels luxurious yet simple. I would love to come back and recommend it for a peaceful and adventurous break.
21/02/2022Imogen
The Observatory is a great mix of stunning walks along the rugged Cornish coast, cosy pubs and and an even cosier cabin with a sea view. If you want a place that feels like it's in the elements, you've picked a great spot
17/02/2022Ellie
The observatory was the perfect location for a winter getaway! We booked to celebrate our 5 year anniversary and last break before our baby arrives, and the owners were very lovely and gave us a bottle of bubbly for the occasion! It was such a comfy stay! The bed was comfy, the sofa was comfy! Perfect for relaxing in front of the fire! Our little dog loved the garden and the coastal path walk! Perfect location too, close enough to everything you need but once you are in the observatory looking over the cliff you would think you are the only ones around for miles!! We would highly recommend as romantic or adventure holiday as it’s the perfect stop for both!
26/11/2021Abi-leigh
Excellent location for coastal walks
15/11/2021Howard
We had a fantastic stay at The Observatory. The cabin is beautifully decorated and the views are stunning. We enjoyed walks along the coastal path (when the weather allowed!) and cosy evenings in by the fire. I would highly recommend a stay here!
15/10/2021Kitty
Awesome stay at the observatory! Amazing sunsets, comfy bed. The log burner kept the place lovely and comfy.
11/10/2021Cheryl
Very lovely stay despite the weather! Views were glorious and the Observatory very cosy when blowing a gale outside and a great place to get away from it all with dog. We did some great coast path walks and also explored the Helford river. Such a lovely part of the country. Would really recommend the Observatory and would love to come back.
27/09/2021Posy
The Observatory is all about the location and being able to hear the crashing of the waves from the comfort of your bed... Or watching the boats sail past as you indulge in the rainfall shower.... A morning coffee watching the sunrise and a Cornish cider as the sunsets on the horizon... Gunwalloe beach is five minutes down the coastal path and most days we have the beach to ourselves as we walked along to Loe Bar... Or take the coastal path the Church Cove if you fancy some surfing or refreshments from the cafe... Pub within walking distance... You really could lock the car up and just relax...
17/09/2021Laura
We had a very lovely peaceful stay for our minimoon. There were little touches that made it extra special. The grounds and cottage were beautiful and though we weren’t terribly lucky with the weather we had a lovely comfortable place.
16/08/2021Cathy
We spent a lovely few days at The Observatory, exploring Cornwall and walking the coastline nearby. The accommodation was wonderfully cosy, clean, and felt very welcoming from the moment we arrived.
19/10/2020Elizabeth
The Observatory was set on a cliff top with spectacular views. Warm, comfortable and cosy. We chose this site for the numerous coastal walks and we were not disappointed. The private garden space and secret garden were a bonus during the sunny days. Our host Lucy was welcoming and helpful with local information.
12/10/2020Debra
Amazing setting, despite our late arrival, Lucy had the log burner going for when we arrived. Spotlessly clean and the most fabulous view to wake up to in the morning
25/09/2020Laura
The observatory was a beautiful, peaceful and brilliantly situated property. It has everything you need for a comfortable stay but its cliff top location, access to multiple beaches, sunset views and a pub within walking distance made this a great place to stay.
27/07/2020Christopher
We had a really relaxing stay at The Observatory. The location is stunning, right on the cliff top with amazing views. The cabin is cosy and had all we needed. We were there is a huge storm but the cabin weathered it well! We now want to go back and see it in the summer. The local pub was great for good pub food - and easily walkable, even in a gale! Local cliff top walks were stunning.

Brilliant - just what we needed. A cosy hideaway with great views. Great walking and lots of fresh air. Host Lucy was very welcoming.

We had a very pleasant stay at the Observatory. It is snug and well appointed. This was a great location to head out from. St Ives Tate, Barbara Hepworth and the Leach Pottery. Coastal walks or creekside pubs. The observatory is just a neat place to be.

We had an amazing stay at The Observatory for our anniversary. Perfect location by the sea with log burner which we will sorely miss!! Lovely hosts, beautiful homemade vegan brownies and sloe gin on arrival. Couldn't have asked for more!

We had the most wonderful week at The Observatory. We loved the cosy, tucked-away and unique setting. It was a perfect place to explore a part of the country we haven't been to before. We enjoyed wonderful days out (despite 6/7 days being rainy; we didn't care!) in the stunning local area, before coming home to a lovely hot shower and sitting by the log fire with dinner and a glass of wine. Bliss! On our one sunny day we loved watching the sunset over the amphitheatre, followed by a BBQ and sitting by the fire pit just watching the sea. Lucy and Roger were perfect hosts and we appreciated the welcome drinks and cake! We didn't want to leave...
25/10/2019Helen
it was a fantastic place and exactly as advertised. Lucy the host was lovely and welcomed us with flowers and homemade cake. The views were fantastic. Sadly due to weather we were not able to use the fire pit and toast marshmallows which were also provided but we will try and go back one day

We had never been to Cornwall before, and hearing from friends & family about the fabulous coastal walks & scenery in that area, we wanted to stay somewhere that was close to the coastal paths, but within easy access of nearby villages & tourist attractions.

We chose the Observatory because it ticked all the boxes - near the sea, cabin, bathroom facilities, coastal path, privacy, near a pub and because we thought it looked a bit quirky!

Fantastic location for seeing southern Cornwall! The observatory is a great place to stay with everything you need for a simple holiday in beautiful surroundings. Lots of lovely beaches for swimming/surfing from, two in easy walking distance, and the lizard and many other coves within 20mins drive. Lucy was a great host, the prosecco and cake was lovely and much appreciated after a long drive.
12/07/2019Chris
Absolutely loved it! The Observatory was exactly as per the pictures, absolutely beautiful in a fantastic setting right on the coastal path, couldn't have hoped for better.

It was quite perfect. Our hosts Roger and Lucy were very welcoming and the observatory was a lovely place to stay. Lots of little extras including a very comfortable king size bed and a log burner.

It was really wonderful. The Observatory has it all from peaceful tranquility to adventure. We had some wild weather due to the storms that affected the whole country but in a way it made it more exciting and the cosy feel of The Obserbatory made it safe and warm. The wood burner was fantastic and really did warm up the whole place. There is a local pub within walking distance which is good when the weather is bad so to avoid having to venture out too far. There is a electric cooker with oven which can make basic food on. The location is fantastic with the coastal path running right across the property and the secret garden which is secluded and spectacular views of the ocean.

The Observatory is a beautiful place to stay in a stunning location. We had the most amazing time. I expected it to be wonderful but it exceeded my expectatations it was magical. The gorgeous weather enhanced everything it felt like we had travelled to another land. The Observatory is set up lovely and we had all that we could need. The owners were great and really helpful with any information we needed. It was simply a gorgeous stay in the most wonderful location such a treat. Birds and butterflies in meadow garden so nice to be around. It's was retreat heaven. The coastline and coves were stunning to visit. Our schedule was derived by pure discussion with locals of places to go and where we could find things we were after, our plans evolved all by themselves. The massage lady that came to the cabin was brilliant and such a lovely treat to add to my stay. I definitely would recommend the observatory.
22/06/2018Marcia
The Observatory was wonderful and suited us perfectly. Lucy the owner has thought out carefully and imaginatively how to decorate and equip this clifftop cabin, with its own wildflower garden and also a seriously secret garden leading down towards the sea. This was our second visit and we aim to return!
08/06/2018Joe
Totally relaxing and a little gem! Stunning views and accommodation quaint and comfy. Beautiful walks from your own private garden, we watched dolphins, seals, sunsets and stunning array of stars in one weekend and still found time for the local pub which was lovely and friendly. Will return for sure ...stunning.
11/05/2018Jane
The Obseravtory is in a great location with spectacular views from the Halzephron cliffs. We enjoyed some spectacular sunsets, cloud formations, a beautiful full moon and starry nights. Inside the property has everything you need to be cosy and comfortable, the log burner is wonderful and much appreciated during the recent cold Easter Bank holiday weather. The Obseravtory has been designed with much taste and style incorporating beautiful colours that reflect the natural environment such as sand, slate grey and touches of pale pink. We loved the Obseravtory- it was everything we had hoped it would be.
30/03/2018Nicky
The Observatory was quite honestly perfect! So cosy and comfortable and well equipped, and incredibly stylish too. Plus, the views were amazing and you could hear the waves crashing from bed! Lucy was there to greet us when we arrived and there were tasty treats waiting for us and the fire was already lit. After that we had total privacy all week - we went for walks along the coast straight from the cabin, stargazed (the most amazing stars we've ever seen!) and ate a plethora of Cornish goodies by the fire. There's a great local pub just down the road (with a great quiz night on a Wednesday) and so much to do in the wider area we could have spent a month there. We had snow AND sunshine, but our favourite thing was to sit and watch the birds in the garden and the ships bobbling on the sea all through the The Observatory's windows. It was so peaceful and beautiful and and felt a million miles away from everywhere -we felt really lucky to stay there.

We spent 4 nights here at the end of May as our 'babymoon'. We were completely spoiled with the weather! Was a great base for exploring local area - gorgeous coves, coastal walks and towns.
22/05/2017Lisa
Our favourite Canopy and Stars so far! Breathtaking sea views, a wonderful location with pubs and restaurants in walking distance and a beautifully decorated cabin with everything we needed. Oh and the comfiest bed! Our host had left restaurant recommendations that were perfect and was utterly welcoming. Would recommend this place to everyone we know!
01/05/2017Laura
A little piece of heaven with breathtaking views along the coast! We loved everything about the Observatory. Inside it's beautifully appointed with everything you need to get away from the hustle and bustle - comfy bed, rain shower, cute kitchen. Outside you have your own private garden where you can stargaze at night and see dolphins swim past by day. The cliff path starts at the bottom of the garden and the walks are simply stunning in both directions. This is the kind of place you don't want to review because you want to keep it secret!
17/04/2017Carolynne
The outdoor space here is fantastic with the sweeping sea views on your doorstep, your own garden with wildflower meadow, a shared secret garden and a cliffside ampitheatre. I'd definitely recommend taking the coastal path to nearby foodie Porthleven. It's the perfect place for stargazing, or on chillier evenings snuggle up around the woodburner or try the outdoor fire pit. A stunning spot in the Cornish countryside.

The Halzepron house is in an ideal, idyllic place, just by the beautiful cliffs, this is why we went there again.

This was Our second stay here and we absolutely love it. Right by the sea with some amazing beaches and walks nearby. During our stay we explored the area and surroundings and visited a few different places. The weather was lovely with one very stormy day

Amazing setting, despite our late arrival, Lucy had the log burner going for when we arrived. Spotlessly clean and the most fabulous view to wake up to in the morning

The observatory was a beautiful, peaceful and brilliantly situated property. It has everything you need for a comfortable stay but its cliff top location, access to multiple beaches, sunset views and a pub within walking distance made this a great place to stay.
