Overview
This hand-built shepherd’s hut is the latest arrival at Inshriach House. It’s well insulated and toasty all year round, thanks to a little Alles stove on a reclaimed slate hearth, which is incidentally just big enough to fry up an egg or two from the farmyard. As with the other places to stay at Inshriach, nothing is done by halves – there’s a mahogany table for eating or writing your best seller, and a raised oak bed with piles of cushions. There’s also a private compost loo just outside.
The shepherd’s hut is perfectly isolated, a 600m walk over rough terrain from the car park and shared facilities (hot shower and flushing loo) at the farmyard. Here you can also get involved in woodworking and bushcraft courses if you like. From your hut itself though, you won’t see any other guests – just the horses in the field, the River Spey below and the wild Cairngorms all around, offering wonderful walks right from your sturdy stable door. Owner Walter is a master of repurposing unusual things, and the brand new wood-fired horsebox sauna can normally be found somewhere down on the river, for the use of all guests at Inshriach. Or why not pop over to Walter's gin distillery too, recently voted Channel 4's 2015 Shed of the Year!
The surrounding area is full of adventure, from white water rafting and canoe trips down the Spey in the summer to ski touring in the winter.

Activities

Around Inshriach
We've heard a rumour there's a sauna-in-a-horsebox tucked away on the estate - find it, sit back, and enjoy. (It moves about, but when it's in the location on the right you can take a dip in the river at the same time!)
Rothiemurchus estate offers all sorts of activities from mountain bike hire to clay pigeon shooting, off road driving and dog sledding. The National Park has something for everyone. Loch an Eilean and Glen Feshie are an easy hike from the house and, for the more determined, the Argyll stone gives spectacular views down Glen Einich and into the Cairngorms.
Sailing, canoeing, kayaking, windsurfing and fishing are available on Loch Morlich and Loch Insh.
Alvie Estate have a riding school and also offer falconry, archery and more.
You can go flying at the gliding school, climbing at the climbing wall (or in the mountains) or to the Kincraig Wildlife Park to see the tigers.
If all of this sounds a bit too much, kick back and go fishing or take a stroll around one of the local museums. Our favourite is the Highland Folk Museum at Newtonmore.
Places to visit
Inverness is a 45 minute drive if you feel the need to do any shopping in its old Victorian Market or new award winning shopping complex.
Loch Ness is only an hour away should you fancy your chances of seeing the monster.
Festivals & events
Inshriach house is home to the Insider Festival, which showcases some of the hottest folk and emerging acts from across Scotland over a LONG weekend in June. The festival is a celebration of local music, crafts and locally sourced food and drink, of course.
Courses & classes
There's plenty to get involved with at Inshriach. Get in touch with Wooden Tom to arrange a woodworking course at the farmyard, where you can carve your own spoons and bowls and even make your own furniture! Meet your hosts

Walter Micklethwait and his mother Lucy run the Inshriach Estate. The Edwardian house (now operating as a self-catering property for holidays and photoshoots) was built in 1906 as a sporting lodge, part of a 5,000 acre estate. In 1970 Walter’s grandfather bought the house and farmland. In 2008 Walter (an antique dealer and king of DIY) and Lucy (an art historian) took over . . .
The whole estate needed restoration and they set about this in a characteristically resourceful style. The main house (all 10 bedrooms of it) is redecorated but retains its original layout and features such as enormous baths, bits of early wallpaper and even a couple of original carpets. Retaining an Edwardian atmosphere was important, but so was the environment. A wood pellet boiler was installed, and solar panels. The use of Ecover washing products is compulsory.
Now Walter has turned his attention to the other buildings on the estate and to running short holiday lets in the Bothy, the Loghouse and the Shepherd's Hut. The Micklethwaits view themselves as being a bit like The Wombles. All over Inshriach you will find resourceful re-use, from stiles to bridges, furniture to fencing, all made from foraged materials. The platform for the yurt is made from discarded fence posts, scaffold planks and timber, the barbecue from a truck wheel and all the furnishings are relics from the house or restored bits from junk shops.
Inshriach is also the scene of the Insider Festival, another exercise in making brass from muck. All the bars and backdrops are made from recycled, donated and reclaimed materials. The festival features some of the hottest folk and emerging acts from across Scotland.
Wildlife
There are 3 separate SSSIs on the river and the estate is working with the RSPB to improve habitats for rare birds. Keep your bacon stored away or the badgers or pine martens will have it. Deer come down from the moors in the winter to graze in the garden and, if you’re lucky, you might spot a wild cat or a capercaillie. There are red squirrels in the trees, ospreys feeding from the river, buzzards, eagles and other birds of prey in the sky. Along the river you could meet anything from oystercatchers to goldeneye ducks, otters and voles. On the farm there are highland ponies, highland cattle and a small dog called Monty. Oh, and there have even been recent sightings of a panther in the woods.

Just perfect! A peaceful, off grid escape in the cutest little hut.
27/12/2024Nicky
We had such an amazing time at the Inshriach Shepherd's hut, everything about it was perfect. The location was great, the host was extremely helpful and friendly. The shepherds hut itself was really cosy and had everything we needed. All the little extras were helpful and warm showers nearby. We will definitely be back!!
02/12/2024Lee
We had a wonderful stay, the location was beautiful, the hut was cosy and very nicely decorated, and the owner was accommodating and friendly. There was a lot to explore around the site and we were never short of things to do. We struggled a little to do everything on foot and ended up getting a few taxis.
04/10/2024Xanthe
Beautiful location, warm welcome, great facilities and a lovely sense of isolation a very special place to stay
30/09/2024Emma
What a gem of a place. Cody, quiet, pretty. Idyllic really. Remote feeling but close to Aviemore and all the access it provides to trails and beautiful scenery.
23/09/2024Simon
This is in a beautiful setting, with the properties carefully situated so as to maximise the sense of isolation. The discipline required to make sure there is always the right sizes of log chopped to light and sustain the fire is a fabulous contrast to the tedium of urban living. The compost toilet is very nice. The hut itself is charming, cosy and comfy. The washing facilities at the farm are fine. Lizzie and Walter, the proprietors, are there if and when you need them.
23/08/2024Denise
We had a lovely stay – exactly the getaway we were looking for. Walter & Lizzy were very hospitable and made us comfortable. The hut was quiet and cosy in a perfect spot near the river.
26/04/2024Lauren
We had a beautiful stay at Inshriach Shepherd’s Hut. It was cosy and the perfect way to switch off, while being surrounded by such stunning nature.
23/02/2024Monica
Had a really wonderful stay in the shepherd's hut - it was cosy, in a stunning setting with wonderful facilities (hot showers, sauna, gin distillery)
02/02/2024Georgia
It was perfect. We were looking for a simple, cosy wee place to re-connect with each other, and hide away in between trees and by a fire. This place met all of our needs and more. I feel so happy that we took this time.
22/01/2024Naomi
Cool wee place in the middle of nowhere! Perfect if your looking for some escapism and enjoy the simple things in life.
12/01/2024Sarah
Our stay? Well quite simply our stay was brilliant, in this modern fast paced lifestyle it is unexplainable how enjoyable it was to disconnect and step out of the hustle and bustle. The shepherd hut was comfortable, cozy (even at -5°c), and provided us with a long awaited break from reality. The logburner provided a beautiful atmosphere, perfect for enjoying the peacefulness of nature with a few glasses of G & T. As the river is so close it provided the sound track, we wanted for nothing as all amenities are located on site. The owners could not be more helpful if they tried, always polite and genuinely caring, just lovely people. This was by far the most enjoyable trip away me and my wife have had in many years.
04/12/2023Douglas
Our stay was beautiful. A chance to take a breath and just be. And hidden away in the shepherds hut was perfect. We had so much fun just exploring the river, woodland and forest close by, playing in the river and being in the sauna! Luxury and simplicity rolled into one.
11/08/2023Grace
We stayed in the Inshriach Shepherd hut as the first stop on our Scottish escape. We had such fun chopping logs for the fire and wandering about in the beautiful wilderness that surrounds the hut. We felt it was a lovely break from civilization!
25/11/2022Hannah
We had a wonderful time, the perfect mixture of adventure and cosiness in our beautiful rural hut, disconnected from technology, secluded just enough to feel on your own and connected with nature. There is no running water or electricity at the hut, but we got used to it very quickly and enjoyed cooking on fireside stoves, lighting the sauna and washing in the wonderful hot showers at the main site. It's an idyllic place to switch off, read your book, drink hot chocolate & whiskey and look up at the stars. We visited the Cairngorm Reindeer Sanctuary and Inverness (Chanonry Point dolphin watching spot) during our few days, which were both fantastic.
02/09/2022Rebecca
A totally magical retreat hiding away in the Shepherds Hut. Cooked over a campfire, woken by badgers in the night, saunas in a horse box and midnight dips in the Spey. SO relaxing.
22/08/2022Frances
A fabulous few days. Complete peace and quiet, the river nearby and several towns/walks within easy reach. The owners were great, very friendly but not overwhelming. The Shepherds hut was adorable, beautifully decorated with all we needed for the stay, communal facilities were excellent - brand new hot showers, very clean and the kitchen/shop had loads od character. Even had the luxury of fresh eggs, laid by the roaming chickens that morning!
18/07/2022Sophie
We ended our two week trip to Scotland in the Cairngorms at Walter and Lizzie’s place. Such a stunning location and when at the hut, it’s so peaceful and feels miles away from anything. Sauna was a nice touch, right by the river. Beautiful location
18/04/2022Amber
My partner and I stayed in the Shepherd's Hut to celebrate our anniversary and have a complete digital detox away from the work. Though we have visited Inshriach before, it was the first time taking our Sheepadoodle, Cerberus, who thoroughly enjoyed himself. The snow was deep when we first arrived so we loaded up the wheelbarrow and off we went across the fields to get the fire roaring and hole up for the night. The Shepherd's Hut was so warm and cozy with the fire going and wen really enjoyed reading, sharing a bottle of wine and nattering under the stars. The local area was stunning in the snow, Loch Morlich got a big paws up from Cerberus, and the food in the Old Bridge Inn in Aviemore was great. 14/10 - can't wait to go back. We learnt a new word while we were staying - 'snoodging - to nestle snugly and hunker down' which we think sums up our stay perfectly!!
18/02/2022Lauren
We loved every second of our stay at the hut. Its cosy, private, super quiet and the bed is ultimate comfort. A bonus was two trees nearby to put up my hammock for lounging in. we did one adventure day up a mountain and one day onsite swimming (!) in the river and using the sauna. Amazing.
27/09/2021Kitty
This is our second stay at Inshriach shepherds hut and same as before, it was absolutely perfect!
17/09/2021Cate
The shepherd's hut at Inshriach is a wonderful place to stay. Its cosy and quiet and has everything you need for a perfect off-grid weekend. I think this is the 5th time I've stayed there now!
20/08/2021Claire
Our stay at Inshriach Farm, deep into the ancient forest of Rothimurchus, was a truly great experience. Very welcoming environment, the various cabins are nicely placed in secluded areas with some great shared facilities including the riverside picnic tables. You must try the award-winning gin made on site - probably the best gin we've ever tasted!
09/07/2021Curtis
Our 3rd time staying at the Shepherd's Hut and it never disappoints, no matter what the weather. Walter the host is always welcoming and him and his family are great. We stayed for the 3 nights and then 1 night in the local new premier Inn before travelling onto the Isle of Skye for 4 nights camping. But nothing compared to the shepherd's hut and even the bed was far more comfortable than the new premier Inn! As soon as we have to leave we want to stay or are planning on our next trip to Instriach Farm. Never stayed anywhere so good and would recommend it to anyone.
18/06/2021Andrew
Wonderful break once again. One of the most peaceful places I have ever been
22/10/2020Sarah
We stayed in a Shepherds Hut in Inshriach forest in the Cairngorms, the hut was beautifully decorated and kept nice and warm in the evenings with the log burner. It was perfectly isolated, but still within walking distance of the main house, shower, and we could easily contact the owner if we needed anything. Our stay was absolutely perfect and we were gutted when it was time to leave!
02/10/2020Cate
It was wonderful, exactly the calming and away from things experience we were looking for.
27/08/2020Jamie
We stayed at Inshriach Shepherd's Hut near Avimore for our anniversary / to have a digital detox and get away from the pressures of work. It was just beautiful in the highlands (especially in the snow!) and the cabin was perfect for totally switching off and spending time together.
21/02/2020Lauren
We have been here before, the last time being in June. This time it was Feb, much shorter days and darker nights, so a bit harder. But the location of the shepherds hut is simply amazing no matter what the weather is like. We would not stay anywhere else when visiting Aviemore.
14/02/2020Andrew
Very peaceful and beautiful. Friendly hosts.
23/12/2019B
Very relaxing couple of days in a really peaceful spot on the banks of the river Spey. Lots to do round about and inschriach is as special as everyone says!
20/11/2019Dan
I spent a couple of nights in the Shepherd's Hut on Inshriach Farm. It was lovely despite the weather. I bought eggs from the farm and cooked them over a wood fire and took a Highland cup carving class from Wooden Tom on my last day. The host and other farm dwellers were lovely. Will definitely go back.
16/08/2019Michelle
It was just wonderful! We loved every minute and Walter was very kind
21/07/2019Michelle
It was good! Very quick but good. Loved all the quirky parts of Inshriach Farm! Shepherds hut was well kitted out and well decorated.
08/07/2019Hannah
We have stayed before and loved it
14/06/2019Doug
We had a super time despite mixed weather.
04/06/2019Katherine
Perfect
06/05/2019Jimmy
The Shepherd's Hut could not have suited us better -secluded but accessible; unique and minimalist but still cosy and well-equipped. The warm welcome we received on arrival was second to none, and set the tone for the incredible hospitality throughout our stay: our peace and privacy was assured throughout, and there was always someone available if we needed anything. Despite the weather, we braved the sauna (and obligatory dip in the Spey) on the back of peer pressure from the visitor's book, and it really did not disappoint - we would have to agree that it's an essential addition to any stay! The setting and scenery were incredible, and the warm fire immediately remedied the freezing May blizzards while we fried eggs from the resident hens on our little stove. We can't wait to come back, and would highly recommend Inshriach to everyone (just don't forget to buy a bottle of gin)!
03/05/2019Jonathan
What can I say we loved our stay at Inshriach Shepherds Hut. Such a beautiful spot by the river Spey. We walked for miles, swam in the Spey and cosied up at night with the stove in the hut. We could have happily pottered about at Inshriach for the entire time. However there is lots to do around about as well. We had a day trip to Inverness and we went to Landmark with the kids which was brilliant. We had the kids with us this time a 4 year old and a 1.5 year old. They absolutely loved it and didn’t want to leave. The ultimate place to go to get away from stresses and strains of daily life and truly relax and unwind.
26/04/2019Anna
Fantastic place, people plus the weather was kind!
07/04/2019David
We had an amazing long weekend at the Shepard's hut, Walter was very welcoming and showed us around. We spent the evenings relaxing with a fire (either inside or out) enjoying the stars and bird song and cooking some delicious local sausages and eggs. During the days we either spent time on the estate wandering alongside the river or a walk into Aviemore for a spot of lunch. Overall a truly wonderful stay, very relaxing and would definitely stay again! We also enjoyed making friends with the chickens.
28/03/2019Alice
What an amazing little hut! So peaceful and remote. The Sauna is a great extra and is definitely worth it. The whole weekend was amazing being off grid and Inshriach estate is such a brilliant place.
23/03/2019ROBERT
Was met by Dan & Claire, who were lovely, and drove me across the field to the hut. I had traveled a few hundred miles to be by myself for a while and it felt totally secluded with only the slow rush of the River Spey, clatter of woodpeckers, coos of wood pigeons and hoots of owls for company. It took me about an hour of trial and error to get the hang of the Kelly Kettle, but once I got the hang of it it was fun to use. Every afternoon before the sun set I chopped the wood I’d need for the night and following morning, then settled down for cosy evenings which I spent reading, listening to the radio and cooking noodle and vegetable broth (the stove never gets particularly hot so I would recommend bringing a billy can or some other small pot with a lid if you’re planning on making a stew).
18/03/2019Jonny
Our stay here was a complete escape - the hut itself was lovely and really had everything we needed - coffee, a fire, a cosy bed and seclusion. We also had a sauna and a dip in the Spey! The walks from the farm are great - its easy enough to get up onto the plateau and really feel away from it all. We were lucky enough to see red squirrels in the forest and the soundscape of woodpeckers by day and owl by night was a welcome change. Highly recommended!
02/03/2019Sara
A wonderful private place in the peaceful woods with pretty views and a lovely river

I treated my boyfriend to a 3 night stay here as a surprise for his birthday and our anniversary. We had a wonderful time! The cabin was lovely, very simple and cosy. It was fantastic to get back to basics, heating ourselves up with a log-stove, brewing coffee each morning and talking around the camp-fire each night while gazing at the stars. The cabin was secluded and very private situated in gorgeous grounds. Had it been slightly warmer we’d have braved the cold dip in the Spey. Thank you for a wonderful retreat!

Great location. Really quiet and no cars on site. Sauna amazing feature
24/09/2018Austin
We stayed here for our mini honeymoon and it was fab from start to end. Friendly welcome then left to our own devices in the most perfect little hut imaginable. Peace and quiet, homely and warm. Will be returning
03/09/2018Sarah
Amazing stay, amazing place. Everything I wished for our weekend and a little more. Walter has got it exactly right and there is nothing he should do to change it.
17/08/2018Jane
Utterly gorgeous. Stunning scenery and the perfect way to escape from the hustle and bustle of life!
22/07/2018Charlotte
A perfect getaway from the humdrum of normal life...
27/06/2018Fraser
Amazing place, shown about by friendly owner but left to own devices. Wonderfully put together site by ingenious owner.
12/06/2018Sam
Incredibly beautiful place to stay, well equipped and great surroundings
22/05/2018Anna
We had an amazing time and loved all aspects of our stay. The hut is so cosy, the bed so comfortable and the tranquility so blissful.
04/05/2018Judith
The Shepherd's Hut was just as described. It is set on a quiet spot by the river and great for a few days peace and quiet. Facilities are basic, as stated in the advertising, but there are a few unexpected luxuries (Le Creuset cooking pots, some great books and very efficient stove).
30/03/2018Bert
Was lovely, wish we’d stayed longer. Cold and snowy but the shepherds hut we stayed in was warm thanks to the wood stove.
05/03/2018Tim
We had such a lovely time - very remote and relaxing, simple but cosy and well-equipped accommodation and friendly, helpful hosts
09/02/2018Ruby
The stay was wonderful. The staff were very friendly and helped me to and from the hut with my bags which was most appreciated. Lots of wood and the kelly kettle was a huge help.Lovely location and liked that the other yurts and bothy were spaced out.
20/11/2017Kazz
Amazing wee place to stay. Everything you need for a get away from it all holiday. Clean, comfy and cosy. Ice on the ground outside but toastie hot all night because of the wood burner. Lovely, friendly people. Overall....excellent
17/11/2017Kirsty
Outstanding off grid retreat. Couldn't fault it in any way. The hot tub and sauna were exceptional and the icing on the cake.
03/11/2017Lesley
I went for two nights with my three year old and arrived at nightfall. I was met and driven down to the Shepherds Hut where the fire was laid and lit for me. The hut was gorgeos, off grid, cosy and once the stove was lit it was warm all night-even at the end of October. The scenery was magical and the perfect place to escape from it all for a couple of days. The hosts were amazing and really hospitable, I couldn't have asked for a nicer place or more friendlier hosts.
31/10/2017Laura
It was absolutely brilliant. We arrived at our accommodation on the Friday after a couple of hours at the zip trek park nearby. So peaceful and a breathtaking setting. We didn't hear a peep from anyone the whole time we stayed. Total isolation
08/09/2017Fay
Super comfortable and cozy hut. We loved every minute. The farm is such a beautiful and interesting place. And Sam is a very welcoming and fun guy. Made us feel at home. Would certainly go back!
05/09/2017Nathalie
The hut is hidden away off a track, surrounded by trees and heather. You can hear the river flowing in the back drop, and Aldo catch glimpses of it, as it's a very short walk away. The hut itself is very cosy and has everything you need for an incredible outdoors experience. The staff are very helpful. It was an amazing experience!
15/08/2017Evie
It was great! Really outdoor but with the luxury of a hut with a cosy stove, a real bed and some basics. We made a fire every night and when it rained we could sit on the little veranda in front of the hut. It was fabulous!
21/07/2017Marlies
We had a great two night stay in the shepherds hut and converted army lorry once the fires were lit it was so cosy you did not want to leave them on a morning. They were well equipped and the host was really helpful and friendly.
29/05/2017Judith
A brilliant place to relax, no noise, nothing, brilliant.
01/05/2017Robin
We had 2 lovely days in peaceful surroundings on the Spey. The party on the Saturday afternoon was good fun and we were made to feel very welcome.
31/03/2017Debbie
We had a wonderful time at the Shepherd's hut! Although it was -9 outside it was cosy and warm with the log burner on inside. Situated in a wonderful mix of juniper and other coniferous shrub and in amongst birch trees near to the river Spey it is quite simply perfect!
25/11/2016Paul
Fantastic place for relaxation and getting away from the stresses and strains of everyday life. This was our third visit to the Shepherd's Hut and can't wait to go back. The setting is wonderful and even though it was -10 deg outside we were cosy with the log burning stove roaring in the corner. Thanks to Walter and everyone at Inshriach for giving us this magical experience.
22/11/2016Bob
Amazing. From start to finish. The hut had everything we needed and it had all been thought out extremely well. Just enough to be comfortable, but still feel like we were off grid!
11/11/2016Abby
A fantastic stay away from the hustle and bustle of life. There was a genuine feeling of trust to care for our 'home' and the area for everyone to enjoy. The hut was perfectly simple, with everything that we needed. Even in sub-zero conditions it was beautiful - crisp white ground, leaves falling as snow and still our little hut super cosy. On the rare occasion that we met anyone (Sam and Walter), chat was friendly non-invasive and animated.
23/10/2016Cheryl
Three night stay at Inchriach Shepherds Hut, open fires, kelly kettle starry nights all on the banks of the Spey
03/09/2016Stuart
Our stay at Inshriach Shepherd's Hut was better than we could have imagined. It's location was so secluded but we were provided with all we needed to have a fantastic and comfortable stay.
21/08/2016Katy
We had a great time staying in the Shepherd's Hut at Inshriach. The hut itself was lovely and clean and well secluded. We had a great time chopping our own wood and cooking on the wee stove. The area was great and we had fun going hiking in the woods nearby.
24/06/2016David
Awesome! Very private, quiet spot. The hut is fully insulated can be heated with a stove.
12/06/2016Erik
Absolutely wonderful, away from the hustle and bustle of normal life and protected from noise and cars. Super cosy hut with the most powerful log burner ever!
10/06/2016Madeline
My boyfriend and I stayed at the shepherds hut for two relaxing nights. We had been looking for somewhere unique to get away for a few days as a celebration of ending our exams. Shepherds hut seemed perfect as it was close by in Scotland but also not overly expensive. When we got there it was better than we had pictured. We managed to get our privacy and fully relax. The weather was fantastic and it allowed us to fully take advantage of the walks and surroundings. The family that owned the hut was very friendly and always easy to access. We had the perfect time away and were very sad to leave our calm sanctuary.
07/06/2016Quita
We really enjoyed our little break. Quirky but very comfortable. The hut was situated in a lovely spot, private with everything we needed. Perfect for relaxing & spending time together without any distractions. The Horse Box Sauna was fantastic. Walter was very friendly & made us feel very comfortable & welcome. We would definitely want to return.
29/04/2016Karen
Really enjoyed our stay at Inshriach. Great friendly welcome by Walter and Lucy. Shepherds Hut was delightful and really cozy despite the cold weather outside. Beautiful surroundings on the banks of the River Spey. Will definitely be returning.
25/04/2016Bob
It was gorgeous - peaceful, tranquil spot and really lovely accommodation. Everything we hoped for!
09/04/2016Kathryn
In a day and age when basic is often not enough, This place has everything you'll ever need. The most amazing location, a roof over your head, the comfiest bed, the cosiest stove, the friendliest people, and some of the coolest (and warmest) surprises you wouldn't expect!! Xx After proposing to my beautiful Laydee, in the most amazing place, we both said goodbye to the shepherds hut with a heavy heart!! We will DEFINITELY be back xx
23/02/2016Nathan
What a magical place! We arrived late Friday night & were driven down to the Hut. Everything we needed was already there for us. The Fire takes tender loving care to keep it going but its all apart of the experience. We didn't explore as much as we thought we would, too busy relaxing the perfect getaway. We will be back in Summer that's how much we loved it, thanks Walter. Pete and Jess
19/02/2016jess
What a wonderful little place! Gorgeous setting, lovely hut with a comfy cosy bed and great little wood-burning stove. Our stay was made more magical with some overnight snowfall! Loved this place and we will be back for definite. Fantastic getaway from everyday life.
29/01/2016Julie
Everything was just as we imagined. We wanted a quiet place to escape to and with the shepherds hut over looking the Spey river it was just perfect. We even had a small snow flurry on New Year's Day, which is what we went to Scotland for.
31/12/2015Laura
A double-birthday celebration, the hut provided a great location for a cosy and secluded get-away, but also a good base for getting out and about in the mountains and Caledonian pine forests. The accommodation and facilities were rustic and basic but had charm, providing the quirky experience that we ie about Canopy & Stars accommodation. People (staff and other guests) were friendly and helpful, but also respectful of the seclusion being sought.
20/11/2015Chris
We have just recently stayed for two nights at Inshriach Shepherds Hut and oooohhh we lived the dream ! The service when we arrived was really good, a nice young lady drove us, and all our luggage in the Land Rover up to The Shepherds Hut, we took way too much !! She explained how everything worked and then we were left to get on with it ... and we did. We soon got the hang of the storm kettle and the little cast iron stove, and it wasn't long till we were nice and warm and cozy. We had something to eat, my daughter played her guitar and sang a few songs, we played cards by candle-light and then retired to the very comfy/cozy bed .... and Layla-dog had her own 'chez nous' under the bed ! We had so many plans for the next day, but was happy to just hang around the hut and the immediate area .... the dog was in 7th heaven .... out of the door ... into the woods and instant sticks ! 2 nights was definitely not enough time, next time we will definitely stay much longer. We loved the whole place and the people. We'll be back ! Constructive criticism? Check-out procedure could be a bit clearer, we ended up having to carry our luggage back down to the yard, it took two trips.
12/10/2015Val
We got engaged here! Absolutely unbelievable - I only wish we could've stayed longer. completely off grid in the most beautiful surroundings. Taking a dip in the lake in the morning in the rain was something I'll remember for the rest of my life. Even though it rained it was still perfect in every way. Stock up on wine, tea lights and a good book and relax. I cant wait to to come back. It was the most incredible holiday I've ever had ( I work in travel so I've seen a few amazing places in my lifetime) but this really was something. Cant wait to come back!
05/10/2015Hayley
I booked this break away for my boyfriends 40th birthday. It was a surprise and he had no idea where we were going. Arriving in the dark we were greeted very warmly and given a lift to our hut. We cuddled in with a stonking hamper of food and could not wait for the sun rise. We were not disappointed! Set in a private area of woodland with the sound of the running stream we had a wonderful breakfast and had time to explore our surroundings. We had planned to have a meal out but scrapped that idea to have a BBQ and drinks outside our cabin which was far more fun! So cosy and romantic I can't wait to book another stay!
27/09/2015Jessica
Had a lovely 2night stay in the hut. Such a peaceful location so near to the river bank. Stove keeps the hut so nice and warm even the residual heat from the fire in the morning staying warm into the evening. Cracking place and so cute would definitely stay again. Thanks
25/09/2015Duncan
We had the most incredible stay in the Shepherds Hut. What's not to love about a tranquil, secluded spot by a river, amongst the Scottish Highlands, surrounded by sheep! Our hosts were a delight but by no means intrusive, helpful when needed. The sauna was a great touch and we certainly weren't ready to leave after our four night stay.
20/07/2015Emmy
Lovely charming accomidation, small and cosy but with everything we needed. Perfect!
13/07/2015Fionnadh
Just a fab natural stay. Great warm accommodation. Perfect for simple nights away!
15/06/2015Roslyn
My husband and I stayed for our second wedding anniversary and loved it! I wanted to book us an escape from the city and it was perfect - cosy hut, beautiful surroundings and a really peaceful place.
01/06/2015RACHEL
It was wonderful. The hut is kitted out perfectly and even though it rained on and off the view was cracking and so peaceful that it didn't matter in the slightest. The hut is incredibly cosy and it feels as though you are miles from civilisation when actually the farm is only 600m away. Lighting the tea lights at dusk made the wee hut even more magical and enjoying a gin and tonic while sitting on the porch listening to the rain was lovely. We didn't use the horsebox sauna but next time we will and we would definitely head back. I can't recommend this place enough and Walter was so friendly.
27/05/2015Steph
Love this little hut, it was a lovely getaway to a beautiful and very peaceful location. It was lovely and romantic around the wood burning stove and tea lights in the evenings. Our dog Isla absolutely loved our stay here as there were 2 lovely dogs at the farm who she played with.
15/05/2015Jessica
We had a wonderful time in the cosy Shepherd's Hut - it's such an amazing place to stay in and we can't wait to be back!
27/04/2015Hannah
Heaven, peaceful and the amazing, we went for a late honeymoon and wanted just to relax and that is what we did! The hut was warm inviting and had everything we needed. The sound of the water and the wildlife filled the hut. The fire pit and little sick was a extra bonus along with a storm kettle!!!! The weather was lovely and had it been warmer we would have had a swim it was april so still a little too cold!
07/04/2015Fiona
We took a chance in booking to stay in the Shepherd's Hut in February, but were really lucky with the weather - although it was very cold indeed, with snow on the ground, it was bright and sunny with no wind, so we were actually really cosy on the cottage with the stove going. The setting of the hut in a little grove of birch and juniper close to the river Spey was very beautiful and tranquil, and at night the full moon on the snow meant you didn't even need a torch. It was quite special to experience in this environment in the middle of winter. The compost toilet was excellent too. The folk at the farmhouse were very friendly too.
06/02/2015Caroline
Great get-away-from-it-all break.
24/01/2015William
"Weather was quite dreich but that was to be expected being midwinter. The hut was lovely and cosy and with the wood burning oven going it was often so hot inside we had to have a window open! Awesome Victorian bed and a selection of books above it. Lots of twinkly tea light candles for a very romantic ambience. Nice and secluded spot so you're unaware of other guests. There's also a resident luthier who fixed a guitar and a mandolin for us at a very reasonable price!"
31/12/2014Tara
"Fantastic three days - half with snow and ice, half damp & rainy. The hut however was incredibly cosy (I was worried about being cold!) and had everything needed in a very compact and well organised space"
28/12/2014Jill
"The hut was divine, stunning location. Wonderful and cosy little palace in the woods."
15/11/2014Andrew
"The venue was idyllic; the hosts were wonderful - so warm, welcoming, helpful, kind and friendly. The hut itself was a wee gem....lots of little personal touches that made all the difference.....knowing so much had been handcrafted actually restored my faith in human nature! (I work in social work and had come away for a break after a long few months!) Cosy and a real haven. As we drove away, we were already planning a return visit, and another, and another...."
31/10/2014Sarah
"We got a great and very friendly reception at Inshriach. The shepherds hut was everything we dreamt about and more, everything went smooth and easy, and we left with huge smiles on our faces"
12/10/2014Anders
"it's in a very nice juniper and birch wood setting right at the Spey, and it was a very relaxing short break."
24/09/2014Andrew
"We really enjoyed our stay, very cosy in the shepherds hut, especially the badger who came each evening."
22/09/2014Anne
"The best was the horse-box sauna, being surrounded by trees feeling we were miles away from everyone. The little hut is lovely too, its tiny but has everything in it! I loved the camp-fire and cooking outside."
27/07/2014Claire
"Loved it! Very peaceful and the hut was well decorated and comfortable."
12/07/2014Julia
"Absolutely loved it! Cute, cosy loveliness!"

Reviews
We had a lovely, relaxing stay at Inshriach. Our shepherds hut was beautifully furnished, very simple but had everything we needed. We loved the fire and making our porridge atop it in the morning. Walter and Lizzy were extremely friendly and it was really interesting hearing about all their projects. We loved meeting all the animals too!
03/02/2025Matilda

Amazing wee place to stay. Everything you need for a get away from it all holiday. Clean, comfy and cosy. Ice on the ground outside but toastie hot all night because of the wood burner. Lovely, friendly people. Overall....excellent
