Overview
Your woodland safari adventure starts from Forest Garden’s ‘Out of Africa’ themed yurt, full of leopard print throws, cosy furs and wooden furniture. Watch the wildlife (normally deer rather than antelopes) from your big oak deck, track rabbits through the woods, and look out for heffalumps – after all, with the home of AA Milne just around the corner, this is Winnie the Pooh country! Lisa and Charles have brought their African flavour to the woods as sustainably as possible, with locally sourced, steam-bent poles of ash and hazel making up the frame of the yurt, a water-saving shower and solar-powered fairy lights for the evening.
Remember to bring matches for the wood burner inside and fire pit outside! You’re 50m away from the other yurt on site so you’ll have plenty of private space, and the shared bathroom’s not much further. Speaking of shared facilities, you might want to pop into the Finnish-style sauna to sweat away your troubles, so be sure to book in for the chance.
There’s always a lot to get involved in at Forest Garden. Charles and Lisa put on bespoke courses in woodcrafts, beekeeping or forest bathing. Get in touch after you book!

Meet Lisa and Charles
The property has been Lisa’s family home since 1971. Charles and Lisa created Forest Garden Shovelstrode in 2011 as a place where people could come and stay in a beautiful woodland retreat as well as take part in a wide range of courses in traditional craft. Charles and Lisa share a passion for living a more sustainable lifestyle and showing people various ways of lowering their own carbon footprint.
Situated three miles away from the Ashdown Forest, Forest Garden Shovelstrode is set in 6 acres of land, 3.5 acres of which is ancient woodland. Historically it formed part of John of Gaunt’s hunting park and was originally known as Anderida Forest. The yurts and cabin are nestled in the magical woodland, where there is evidence of ancient iron pits. On an old disused paddock a ‘Forest Garden’ is being created. This is based on the oldest form of permaculture, planting within seven layers of the canopy, from lower root zone to upper tree canopy to produce perennial vegetables, fruit, nuts, oils and resins. The project is well underway and, after two years of soil preparation with nitrogen fixing and mineral accumulating plants, the third ‘shrub’ layer is expected to be planted during the spring of 2014. The Forest Garden is built on the edge of a large, deep wildlife pond which backs on to the edge of the ancient woodland.
Wildlife & Environment
The wildlife pond has encouraged a plethora of dragonflies, frogs and newts to thrive. There are also two beehives on site for the ‘Introduction to beekeeping’ courses. Guests have frequently seen deer and rabbits in the wood and are able to enjoy the sound of birds including owls, buzzards and woodpeckers from morning to night. A large heron frequently visits the pond.
The woodland is rich with wildflowers including bluebells, orchids and wild garlic to name a few. In the autumn a plethora of mushrooms can be found and guests can enrol on a ‘Mushroom foraging’ course in October which also includes a site visit to Ashdown Forest.
There are several SSSI sites within a few miles of Forest Garden Shovelstrode.
The yurts and cabin are lit by solar powered fairy lights and tea lights and a roaring open pit fire outside complete the idyllic setting. A cosy wood burner inside keeps guests toasty warm on chilly evenings.

Angela
We had a fab stay in the Shovelstrode forest garden. It’s so secluded, an absolutely beautiful location in Sussex but feels like you’re 100 miles from anyone. The yurt was very cosy, you’d definitely need the wood burner in winter though! Owls hooting at night, blackberries to pick in the day, you didn’t need to leave (although we did go to the bluebell railway and the hundred acre wood)

A fantastic few days in a superb yurt and beautiful site.
04/08/2023Rebecca
Beautiful yurts in a gorgeous setting. The bed was comfy with a massive cosy duvet and the yurt was decorated nicely with twinkly fairy lights. Hosts were lovely and provided lots of useful info for the stay

We spent two fantastic nights in Savannah Yurt in late August 2021. The yurt itself is a lovely space - very comfy and spacious - and Forest Garden was an ideal place for a range of ages (one adult, one adult-child and one 11 year old). My son made friends with children in other yurts/cabins, and everyone was super friendly and relaxed. Lisa met us on arrival and made us feel welcome right from the start. It was exactly what we were looking for: a complete break from the city, but only one-hour from London! We would definitely recommend to others.
25/08/2021Laura
This a picturesque site made up of a few cabins and a couple of yurts, each set in woodland, far enough from each other not to disturb one another, but close enough if you want to rent more than one for a group. Lisa and the staff are charming and could not be more welcoming and helpful. Our yurt, Savannah, was clean, spacious, tastefully decorated, well equipped and very comfortable. There were four of us staying and my two daughter slept on the futon and the day bed. The day bed was perhaps a bit small for my 12-year old. There is a log burner in the yurt which ket us cosy and a 2-ring gas hob. Outside there's a sort of fire pit BBQ grill (called a Weber BBQ apparently) with logs to sit on and toast your marshmallows and make your campfire bread (which we did). The yurt stands on a wooden deck where there are also a couple of seats – if you want more then you should bring your own camping chairs. For cleaning, it was just a minute or two to walk up to the two showers, two toilets and two pairs of large butler sinks for washing up. They were all extremely high standard by most camping/glamping standards. A delight. We hope to return.

We are a family of 5 who stayed in the surprisingly spacious and beautifully decorated yurt with comfortable beds, gas hobs and fairy lights. The setting was idyllic.

We had a wonderful relaxing and enjoyable stay in Savannah. The woodland is beautiful with interesting wildlife. The yurt was cosy and comfortable and the area outside it was perfect to relax and socialise - by sitting and chatting around the fire, reading on the decking or eating together on the outside table. A perfect getaway for our family. There was a lot to explore in the surrounding areas and the hosts were really friendly and welcoming.
25/07/2018ruth
All in all very nice. Very peaceful and rustic. Liked the way the yurt was furnished.
23/07/2018Gina
A fun 2 night girly stay where we had gorgeous weather so made full use of the BBQ and fire pit. The yurt itself was very comfortable with lovely cosy furnishings and bed. It was so relaxing waking up with a cup of tea and a roaring wood burner. Great location as you think you are in middle of countryside but only 10 mins from East Grinstead in case you run out of provisions.
01/09/2017Louise
This is a magical place to stay. There are only three yurts in acres of space so you feel completely secluded. What makes this place so special is the host Lisa who greets you and settles you in and then leaves you to enjoy the space.
01/08/2016Sara
We all had a great time - the yurt was very spacious and cosy (once we got the wood burner going). Lisa and Charles were very hospitable and I would highly recommend the afternoon tea and cooked breakfast. Madge the dog was very friendly. Excellent location with loads of things to do close by - Forest Row is a lovely village and we also went to Pooh Corner and played pooh Sticks.
13/05/2016Janine
Most enjoyable. The isolation was adequate and the yurt was a fantastic experience for the whole family.
