Meet your hosts
Meet Yasmin & Sam
Yasmin and Sam are the owners who took over the "reins" in September 2020. Loose Reins is an authentic pioneer style holiday destination, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Dorset. It offers beautifully handcrafted and fully-equipped pioneer lodges and ranch huts.
Wildlife & Environment
Loose Reins is nestled in the foothills of Shillingstone Hill, under the Wessex Ridgeway and the second highest hill in Dorset. The land comprises two large fields called West Coombe and Hazels. The accommodation is sited on the edges of a natural Coombe which is surrounded by Blandford Forest. Loose Reins is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and views from the site take in the local landmarks of Hambledon and Hod hills, both ancient hill forts.
Wildlife is extensive and most native woodland animals can be seen regularly on site and in the forest surrounding the site. Buzzards are seen and heard daily and a family of ravens has taken up residency above the site. There is a badger set on the West ridge and when on foot or on horseback, deer, foxes and squirrels are often encountered. Evening birdsong on site is a cacophony of all native breeds as the natural bowl created by the Coombe intensifies the sound.
Loose Reins also has its own borehole from which crystal clear water rises through the green sand and chalk layers before being pumped to each cabin and lodge. Waste water is treated on site using an underground bio filter system before returning via land drains to the local watercourse. The site operates a recycling system with the local Dorset Waster Partnership and guests are encouraged to split their waste for easy handling.

Our stay was very relaxing, refreshing and strong connected with nature.
28/07/2023Jose
Despite the weather we had a lovely cosy experience in an amazing setting in a comfortable and well equipped lodge.
01/10/2021Andrew
We loved our stay at Hazel Meade. The accommodation was comfortable and rustic, the setting was beautiful and the staff were very friendly.
24/09/2021Emily
This has got to be up there with one of the most relaxing breaks for us. It felt like we were in the middle of no where surrounded by fields, trees and animals with no TV or internet. It was absolutely perfect.
14/05/2021Sam
You can never predict the British weather but we were so grateful of a weekend away we weren't one to complain about the rain ! We usually go out and about on stay-cays but it was actually refreshing to stay close to home and enjoy the safari tent and the abundance of walks, animals and quirky features Loose reins had to offer. We absolutely loved our stay and have recommended to all that will listen!
07/05/2021rachel
Was a quick getaway for 3 nights with another family ... it was totally awesome. Kids loved the riding lessons and the outdoors to roam around and have fun. The Lodges were beautifully kitted out with very comfy beds !
06/04/2018Kerry
We had a wonderful time, everything was perfect.
03/04/2017Sylvia
It was amazing, the safari tents are so impeccably furnished, everything considered. The beds comfy, furniture rustic and added touches that really made the stay special. Perfectly working shower and bathroom facilities, luxury bedding/ electric blankets and extra blankets for sitting on the 'porch', even a hammock at the rear of the building. Simply stunning views, with walks and bike rides accessible. The honesty shop filled with necessities (by that I mean marshmallows for toasting), eggs, milk etc available 24/7 and maps that we could pick up before going on a hike. The tranquillity aided by no TV (heaven!), just the sound of birds and mellow tunes on the radio ensured me that I will be back again!
15/07/2016Penny
I booked Loose Reins for my birthday. The 'tent' was fabulous, everything in it felt brand new and the location was great.
24/06/2016Chloe
It was an ideal setting and the lodge comfortable, warm and well equipped. Although arriving late at night we had a warm welcome from the owner and the wood stove burned brightly. There were even electric blankets warming the beds and food essentials in the fridge. One of the party had booked a two hour trail ride which was delightful and a relaxing way to see the lovely countryside.
