Cabin
Sleeps 5
- One king-size bed, and three single beds
Suitable for children of all ages
Pets welcome
Overview
Where the Dorset National Landscape meets the Cranbourne Chase AONB, Foresters Cabin is swaddled into the Loose Reins site, alongside her sister cabins. With nothing to see from the windows but trundling sheep, patchwork fields and wooded hillside – this is the spot to settle down for a few days and let the countryside calm wash over you.
Built for five, Foresters Cabin has one king-sized bed and three singles, so fitting everyone in will be as easy as catering to them, with a compact kitchen with gas hob, and dining table just adjacent. Sit down to dinner, roll open the French doors and let the fresh air wash in. Or if the sun’s not playing ball, snuggle up on the sofa, fire up the wood burner, and begin the board game championship! Whatever the weather, you’ll eventually find yourself outside in the hot tub, clinking glasses.
With afternoons out on the deck, cooking up grilled feasts in the firebowl or even meeting the animals onsite, your days will be filled to the brim with things to do. You can go exploring in the locale, and you’ll find all the days out and eateries you can manage, but evenings at communal firepits are what you’ll remember when you reluctantly head home.

Meet your hosts
Meet Yasmin & Sam
Yasmin and Sam are the owners who took over the "reins" in September 2020. Loose Reins is an authentic pioneer style holiday destination, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Dorset. It offers beautifully handcrafted and fully-equipped pioneer lodges and ranch huts.
Wildlife & Environment
Loose Reins is nestled in the foothills of Shillingstone Hill, under the Wessex Ridgeway and the second highest hill in Dorset. The land comprises two large fields called West Coombe and Hazels. The accommodation is sited on the edges of a natural Coombe which is surrounded by Blandford Forest. Loose Reins is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and views from the site take in the local landmarks of Hambledon and Hod hills, both ancient hill forts.
Wildlife is extensive and most native woodland animals can be seen regularly on site and in the forest surrounding the site. Buzzards are seen and heard daily and a family of ravens has taken up residency above the site. There is a badger set on the West ridge and when on foot or on horseback, deer, foxes and squirrels are often encountered. Evening birdsong on site is a cacophony of all native breeds as the natural bowl created by the Coombe intensifies the sound.
Loose Reins also has its own borehole from which crystal clear water rises through the green sand and chalk layers before being pumped to each cabin and lodge. Waste water is treated on site using an underground bio filter system before returning via land drains to the local watercourse. The site operates a recycling system with the local Dorset Waster Partnership and guests are encouraged to split their waste for easy handling.

Our stay was absolutely awesome! The setting is incredibly beautiful and the lodge was well equipped with everything we needed. The elevation of the lodges on the side of the hills and it being car free meant that we could let our 2 & 4 year old roam free and be able to see them/let them run wild freely.
24/05/2024Laura
An exquisite glamping experience! From the beautiful safari lodge with everything we could need to the fabulous wood-fired hot tub, we loved every single moment. Breakfast overlooking the beautiful horses and their foals, glorious long walks, s'mores over the fire pit, reading under the stars with hot chocolate and glasses of wine; it was a slice of heaven for my 5 year old all the way up to the older grown ups.
28/07/2023Cheryl
4 adults staying in one of the safari lodges. The lodge and its surroundings are beautiful. Had some great evenings sat around the fire pit (which doubles as a BBQ). king size beds were great, very comfy, the shower room was much bigger than we were all expecting and offered a rainfall shower which was a little touch of luxury. The kitchen is small but practical and has everything we could think of, including a marshmallow fork. The local pub, a 20 minute stroll offers some really tasty food and a lovely host. The location is great, close enough for a short trip to the seaside and set in beautiful wooded, rolling hills. Thank you for a lovely stay.

We were looking for somewhere we could go with the kids, somewhere with a nice balance of wilderness and home comforts, somewhere with things to do. Loose Reins was the perfect location
13/07/2020Andy
We stayed at Loose Reins as a group of 10, the location was amazing as was the quality of the accommodation. The people at Loose Reins were very helpful, the honesty shop on site came in very handy. Would definitely recommend to others
16/07/2018Tina
Loose reins is lovely, very welcoming by all the staff. The lodge was perfect could not ask for more we had a very nice week here. We will be back.
09/04/2018Caroline
So much better than expected, pictures don't do the lodge/surrounding grounds justice. Pure bliss. So much detail has gone into the accommodation. I stayed with 4 mates and we had a great time. Outdoor bbq's around the fire pit, sitting, relaxing with a few beers. Perfect.

Totally amazing from start to finish. The safari tent was really well equipped. Loads of attention to detail and nice touches to make your stay comfy. Great facilities. We rode both days and the Western Taster session was best as experienced riders. We had a wonderful stay and all of us didn't want to leave and had to tear ourselves away. Michelle was really welcoming and uber helpful. Thank you for a great stay. I plan to return with hubby next time!
24/06/2016Sarah
We have just returned from this fabulous location. The lodge tent was very functional with everything we needed to eat, sleep and play, but also beautifully decorated and in a lovely setting - the best we have stayed in. The children adored their cabin bed with a 'playroom', desk and beanbags underneath as well as all the fluffy woodland creatures on every bed! Michelle was very helpful, as were all the staff we met, over the weekend as they topped us up with kindling and firewood or as the children rode and groomed the ponies - she also provided a wonderful welcome pack of goodies, and the honesty shop was also useful for extra food and drink. We would return in a heartbeat and recommend Loose Reins wholeheartedly!

We loved it! A beautiful cabin, with incredible views, cosy and well-stocked. Our three kids loved the sheep, goat and ponies, and we loved being far enough away from the other cabins that we didn't have to worry about how noisy we were! A great base for exploring a beautiful part of the country.
