Overview
Located in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Lake Farm is surrounded by woodland, unspoilt open countryside and springs which collect to create the Toller and feed the private Lake.
Though you might have booked the space for its access to the Jurassic Coast, proximity to ancient bluebell woods, miles of trails to explore and award-winning restaurants just minutes away, you’re going to struggle to escape the gravity well of wild on site. Toller Hut has all the greatest hits of a genius glamping mixtape – a Hikki wood fired bath, a cold outdoor shower to contrast, even a pontoon to enjoy wild swimming in the lake.
For supplies and a little retail therapy, head to the quaint village square of nearby Beaminster where you will find independent homeware and artisan food shops alongside numerous restaurants and bars. Load up on local produce and try wild cooking with the tripod and fire pit, or more conventional gas BBQ, if building a fire seems suspiciously like hard work.
The stylishly designed interior should give some clue to the attention to detail found at the Lake Farm estate, and it’ll become obvious how well balanced this space is between dipping into the wild and enjoying your luxuries. There’s a king size bed lined in crisp linens, Egyptian cotton towels and all natural toiletries, but when you step outside, miles of unspoilt, wildlife-rich and best of all, mucky wild. Whether you stay and relax or head out on an adventure, coming back to the hut is the perfect finish to any day. There’s little light pollution and few neighbours, so on clear nights you can sit and soak up the stillness of the starry skies & sounds of the nearby woodland & lake.

Meet your hosts
Meet Gemma and James
Lake Farm became home for Gemma & James in 2020, when they moved from Southeast London to live in the glorious West Dorset countryside. Moving from a mid-terrace house in London to a farm was rather daunting for city girl Gemma, but having studied agribusiness at university, the scale of their new responsibilities didn't phase James... who was brimming with ideas for our future.
Having been a dairy farm and more recently a piggery it was time to start mapping the new course that Lake Farm would take. Located in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and neighbours to land managed by the Dorset Wildlife Trust, initial plans focused on protecting the wildlife and native plant habitats. Lake Farm is surrounded by woodland, unspoilt open countryside and springs which collect to create the Toller, a stream that joins the River Hooke down the valley. Toller Whelme takes its name from being at the source or spring (Whelme) of the stream. Toller Whelme is unknown to many people, even locally. Being located off the beaten track, the charm and character of the hamlet seduces visitors with the feeling that they are "far from the madding crowd". Gemma and James soon realised that they needed to share this special part of West Dorset, and there would be no better way to do so than from a shepherd's hut set in the heart of Thomas Hardy country.
Wildlife & The Environment
Lake Farm is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and the farm neighbours land managed by the Dorset Wildlife Trust. There is an abundance of wildlife enjoying the neighbouring habitats. Kingfisher, hare, deer, pheasant, partridge, otter, heron, birds of prey, bats, owls and carp can all be spotted from the comfort of the shepherd's hut. Birdwatchers are in for a treat! Gemma and James graze cows and sheep on the surrounding fields.
At Lake Farm Gemma and James use low input farming, and are planting hedges to create wildlife corridors. The farm in part of the Countryside Stewardship Scheme, and the Toller Whelme Conservation Trust which is helping to preserve and enhance the woodland in the hamlet.
Eco-friendly cleaning products are used, alongside providing 100% natural toiletries and recycled loo roll for guests to use.

Our guests say...
Amy
Our stay at Toller Hut was beyond incredible. The setting, the space, the privacy and all of the special touches there are out of this world. Couldn’t have asked for more and we will definitely be returning very soon.
28/02/2025Nina
We’d booked this last minute and Gemma the host made it all so easy and efficient. Every little detail was thought of and the instructions for our stay were simple and it made everything feel effortless. The hut is beautifully made, the shower room is warm and every space is well thought out and beautifully designed to make the most of the natural landscape and views. It was so stunning we couldn’t believe we’d found such a gem. Also, the fire pit is what dreams are made of! We will absolutely be coming back and recommending Toller Hut to all our friends.

Although the stay was in remote rural retreat we couldn't have wanted for anything. All the extra touches down to the logs and kindling, marshmallows, to top quality toiletries, biscuits, tea and coffee, lovely soft towels and comfy bedding, blankets. Torch, games & cards, and even an umbrella were thoughtfully provided, and made this into a really special getaway in a stunning location.
23/10/2024Joanne
Such a relaxing and peaceful stay, we loved every second and cannot wait to return.
18/10/2024Alexandra
A really relaxing and enjoyable experience. We loved the shepherd’s hut and the owners had gone above and beyond to ensure we were happy.
04/10/2024Joanna
We stayed at Toller Hut for 2 nights and found it everything we needed and more! The host was very accommodating and able to organise very thoughtful optional extras for us. The location is just beautiful and really allowed us to pause, switch off and enjoy each others company.

Far from the Madding Crowd! A weekend of peace, beauty and relaxation, in the perfect Toller Hut. My husband and I like most people spend our lives rushing around and this was the perfect spot to unwind..
03/05/2024Lorna
We rocked up and met Jamie the owner who was very welcoming The accommodation was perfect, warm and super cosy The kitchen , dining area was beautifuly lit with festoon lights and the fire pit was large enough to keep you toasty as it wa Abit cool in the evenings Distance to Bearminster was about 5 minutes and the town was quaint with a couple of really good restaurants Westbay beach was 15-20 mins away so when you got back and had a brilliant shower you were in deep countryside with only the owls for company at night Spot on!!
19/04/2024Mark
Had an amazing stay at Tollars Hut, the location was perfect, right on the doorstep of nature. The accomodation itself had so many little touches to make it perfect. Gemma had literally thought of everything. The outside kitchen was great and we spent a couple of nights out there with the fire pit lit. We saw deer ( including a white deer) a fox, hares and a multitude of birds. Having the feeder outside the hut enabled us to sit and watch them in peace. We had a couple of walks out into the beautiful countryside right from our doorstep. Loved the wood fired bath, worth the effort to heat up. Unfortunately by the time it was ready to get in it was blowing a gale and raining, not that this stopped us though! The shower with a view was lovely, so warm and cosy. The fresh eggs, biscuits, toiletries, games, books.. don’t really know when to stop. It was perfect! Wish we could have stayed longer.
05/04/2024Grace
I just came back from the most peaceful break in this magical place at lake farm - the hut is absolutely gorgeous and kitted out with everything you could need. Loved the outdoor kitchen and the stunning scenery. I couldn’t have asked for anything more and thoroughly enjoyed my stay - would recommend this gem to anyone who wants a good country side break ❤️
01/04/2024Stephanie
We really loved it! Ordered the breakfast hamper, and they were very understanding about us getting there early to beat bank holiday traffic. Everything was made up so nice and the area was well marked. No faults. This was the perfect weekend away for our third anniversary.
29/03/2024Hannah
We stayed at Toller Hut over New Year and had the best time. The hut was gorgeous and every detail had been thought of to make our stay comfortable and easy. The location was idyllic with a gorgeous view over the lake, and we did a great (but very muddy!) trail run from the hut to Mapperton using one of the super-helpful route cards provided. The outdoor bath was a real treat even in the bad weather we had! The host was really communicative and helpful both before and during the stay which we appreciated so much.
30/12/2023Hannah
We had the most wonderful weekend and although we live in East Dorset this was a world away. Toller Hut is in a beautiful location and the Hut is beautifully furnished and clean with everything you could possibly need. We picked the coldest weekend of the year and we were both snug and warm in the hut. Beaminster is near and we had three wonderful meals out there, some beautiful walks and scenery. Thank you for a great weekend and just what we needed to relax and revive!
24/11/2023Kay
I had a wonderful, relaxing and rejuvenating couple of nights in Dorset. The farm was not hard to find and there were clear instructions for everything from where to park to how to get the wood fired bath warmed up. The hosts seemed to have thought of everything and all the little extras I had brought from home 'just in case' stayed in the bag. The shepherds hut was spacious but also cosy, and the separate shower hut was stunning with views over the hills to accompany your shower. The wood fired bath was definitely a highlight and with the clear instructions it was simple to get the fire going and maintain it until the water was warm enough to get in and just relax watching the moon and listening to the owls hooting. I'm an outdoor swimmer all year round and also had a swim in their private lake. The jetty had a couple of loungers on it and wooden steps down into the water. I can imagine that in the summer, this would be a lovely space to spend some time soaking up some sunshine.
30/10/2023Jen
Our third visit within a year, Gemma has created a haven at Toller Hut. Thoughtful touches meet comfort and luxury whilst providing complete peace and quiet from the outside world. Barn owls float over the wood fired bath and woodsmoke from the fire pit takes me back to a happy childhood. Thanks Gemma.
25/10/2023Sara
Astoundingly special. For us this was a perfect - peaceful - solitude & restful. The Toller Hut was warm & cozy with everything we forgot to take. Beautiful & well presented.
23/10/2023B
This was an amazing place to stay and exceeded all expectations. Gemma was such a lovely and thoughtful host and the surrounding area of Toller hut was just beautiful. The rowing boat on the lake was a brilliant touch to our stay. We would definitely consider returning.
11/09/2023Siana
We had a fantastic stay. Toller Hut combines luxury (everything is such high quality) with a truly idyllic location. We loved being able to sit out at the hut, on the pontoon, in the outside bath and by the fire pit - all providing wonderful views of the tranquility around Lake Farm. The outside kitchen is an amazing feature, although perhaps better suited to warmer, drier days as we were lucky enough to enjoy. If you are looking to spoil yourself and get away from it all - Toller Hut delivers brilliantly.
14/08/2023Peter
Perfect - a beautiful place in the world and the shepherd's hut and its facilities were wonderful. The hosts had thought of everything. It was just the right combination of natural countryside and luxury touches. The hut was beautifully appointed and equipped with everything you could need. The views were gorgeous from every aspect - including the shower! The outdoor kitchen was spacious and well equipped. We were blessed with good weather but everything was set up to work in less friendly weather too. The lake was stunning and the view of it from the hut and seating area outside the kitchen amazing. The hosts Gemma & James were very helpful but also gave us privacy to relax and enjoy our stay. We particularly liked that there was only one hut - it made it a really special experience. We would definitely like to return here again.
24/07/2023Salli
Just wanted to say how much we enjoyed our weekend break. The facilities were fantastic, all the little touches were greatly appreciated. The breakfast hamper was great and good to try some local produce. The hut was perfectly positioned to enjoy the stunning scenery just a shame Saturday was a wash out for us.
21/07/2023Amanda
Wonderful stay, beautiful surroundings. Everything you could need, even a hairdryer! Absolutely lovely stay, would return. Thank you.
14/07/2023Abby
We were really impressed with everything. Quality of everything was superb - every little detail had been thought about and the small touches were much appreciated!! The hut was so comfortable and cozy - the shower was lovely and the robes to move from hut to shower room a thoughtful touch. The kitchen area was really well equipped and loved that Gemma had left us fresh eggs for breakfast and marshmallows for the fire pit. Will definitely be back
12/07/2023Lisa
Very relaxing and charming, everything was covered (great information to help make the stay a success), exactly as described on the website.
21/06/2023Julie
The most wholesome weekend away. Staying at Toller Hut in June was a birthday present from my boyfriend and honestly, I couldn't think of a more perfect gift. Gemma & James have made the most wonderful little sanctuary to hide away from the world, with everything you need and extras at your finger tips. We started everyday, cuppa tea in hand, in the complimentary robes, watching the wildlife around us - we even saw an albino deer and her two fawns, with the help of the binoculars left in the hut. During our stay we visited multiple stops along the Jurassic coast, including Lulworth Cove, Durdle Door, Weymouth, Portland Bill & Lyme Regis - all within an hour's drive from the hut. At the end of the day we were greeted with open arms by our home. The shower has great temperature and pressure control, with complimentary, natural shower gels & body wash, perfect to wash away a day of sun cream and sand. As the sun started to go down, we followed the cosy solar lights from the hut up to the cooking station, fired up the BBQ for a cooking party and enjoyed a glass of wine in the woodfired bath. Honestly, what more could you ask for.

We stayed in the lovely Toller Hut for my boyfriend’s birthday. The hut was so charming, with a small wood fire, lake for wild swimming and wood fired bath. There are so many thoughtful (and practical!) touches, which made our stay incredibly comfortable and easy. The hut is surrounded by beautiful Dorset countryside and there is a plethora of beautiful walks and country pubs nearby.

Our second stay at Toller Hut was just as perfect as the last. Gemma’s attention to detail makes the stay luxurious and the facilities are thoughtfully designed and flawlessly clean. The wood fired bath is bliss under the stars and the valley is such a peaceful escape. It really is our ‘happy place’.

A beautiful hut with an amazing private lake. Everything was perfect and had so much attention to detail, fire burners all around which made it very cosy. A lovely kitchen area to cook meals and everything we could have asked for. 100% recommend and will definitely return.

I have honestly never stayed in a place with so many thoughtful touches throughout. From the pre-laid firepit with giant marshmallows and long sticks, to the breakfast condiments, the umbrella to keep you dry getting between the hut and the covered barn or just the beautiful seasonal flower arrangements on display. This shepherd's hut went far beyond the norm with a separate shower hut with stable doors for a wash with a view, to the massive private covered barn with BBQ cooking facilities and even a dishwasher, to the hot tub perfect for stargazing and really comfortable seating outside the hut looking right out over their lake! A beautifully designed generous space that I am still daydreaming about after my stay!

I can’t even begin to say how much I loved this place. After nervously booking a last minute solo trip, I had no regrets as soon as I arrived. The hut is warm and cosy, and every morning sitting by the lake, doing my own yoga and having a coffee was bliss. You can walk straight out the hut to so many breathtaking views, and you barely need to get back in the car at all. Cooking facilities are great, and the Hikki tub in the moonlight was pretty special too. Bridport is worth a visit (if feeling more social!) and check out soulshine cafe- it’s a must! Thank you Gemma and James, I’ll be back for another solo retreat soon I hope :)

Our stay at Toller Hut was beyond incredible. The setting, the space, the privacy and all of the special touches there are out of this world. Couldn’t have asked for more and we will definitely be returning very soon.

Such a relaxing and peaceful stay, we loved every second and cannot wait to return.

A really relaxing and enjoyable experience. We loved the shepherd’s hut and the owners had gone above and beyond to ensure we were happy.

We really loved it! Ordered the breakfast hamper, and they were very understanding about us getting there early to beat bank holiday traffic. Everything was made up so nice and the area was well marked. No faults. This was the perfect weekend away for our third anniversary.

Astoundingly special. For us this was a perfect - peaceful - solitude & restful. The Toller Hut was warm & cozy with everything we forgot to take. Beautiful & well presented.

This was an amazing place to stay and exceeded all expectations. Gemma was such a lovely and thoughtful host and the surrounding area of Toller hut was just beautiful. The rowing boat on the lake was a brilliant touch to our stay. We would definitely consider returning.
