Overview
Built from timber sourced right on site, Lydia and Alex have created a wild escape amongst the ten acres of ancient deciduous woodland. This is a space for creativity, invention, and inspiration. Each of the spaces on the site are made to reinvigorate, and you’re able to book them together for larger groups, with space for six more to camp in the field next to the tractor shed.
Take it easy for a few days, with long strolls in the fresh air and nature – spotting bluebells when they’re in season, or wildflowers on the meadow’s fringe. Pad through the barn calmly, finding spots to perch, like in the sunlight on the sofa in front of the large windows, or at the table – doodling with the arts supplies whilst lunch gets crafted from the local fare.
When you’re not breathing deep contented sighs in the hammock outside, you might be strumming on the guitars, or using one of the other instruments left for you, in front of the wood burner under the covered veranda outside. Or of course, using the recording studio inside to capture your inspiration whilst you’re there – whether you’re amateur or pro. With its location just eight or so miles from the sea, you’re never far from adventures along the coast, whether it’s beach walks, surf or paddleboarding!

Meet Lydia and Alex
Lydia Duncan and husband Alex are artists and musicians who have lived and worked here for many years, running Candyland Studios, Woodland Retreat, Tractor Shed, a recording studio and art studio, as well as teaching and mentoring children and adults in Guitar, Voice, and Music technology. Candyland was a way of combining their love of growing vegetables, making music, painting, cycling, running, swimming and all things outdoors to create a haven for families to come and enjoy the countryside like they do!
Wildlife & environment
The spaces are built from as much recycled wood and materials as Lydia and Alex could lay their hands on and are true labours of love! They sit within a deciduous wood where primroses and foxgloves flower in the open spaces and Honeysuckle climbs the trees. Bees and butterflies are a constant, you'll hear Willow Warblers, Chiff-chaffs and woodpeckers, and you might be lucky enough to catch site of the deer in the early hours as they run along the woodland pathway into the open fields. The pond is also a great haven for wildlife too, especially for the Hawker and Golden-ringed Dragonfly. As night falls, watch the swooping Pipistrelle bats as they dart to and fro overhead.

We had a wonderful stay at the tractor shed. It was the perfect place to forget about time and connect with friends and nature. The whole house and garden have been thoughtfully designed for a big group of people to comfortably share their holiday. We are planning to come back and keep exploring the beautiful coastline nearby. Thank you so much Lydia & Dincan for making the place feel so welcoming and easy to be in xx

We had a wonderful few days at The Tractor Shed. It was a real getaway from it all place, full of character, hidden in the Devon countryside.

I booked the Tractor Shed for my partners 30th birthday. It was a beautiful location and setup perfectly for outdoor relaxation. The field attached to the property was well kept and meant we could play games up there. The fire pit was setup with a grate to BBQ over which was great fun to do every evening. The table setup outside was ideal for outdoor dining and the wood stove kept us warm when it got cooler in the evening. We were lucky enough to have good weather which really added to the experience, but even if the weather turned, there was great shelter outdoors and the inside of the house was setup really well. We brought our dog with us too and he didn't want to leave! I highly recommend this property to anyone who enjoys the outdoors, loves a fire, drink and chatting long into the evening.
