Overview
The handcrafted hobbit hut in the woods at Mill Valley looks almost like it grew right where you find it, which in one sense it did. A living ash tree sits in the middle and the cosy, rustic cabin with its circular door sprung up around it, formed from reclaimed wood and Lisa and Neil’s creativity. Settle into the slow life and the rhythms of off-grid living as you light the wood-burning stove for morning tea, the BBQ or the pizza oven for dinner and candles for long romantic evenings. Stumpy Hobbit is tucked away and you have your own private outdoor covered dining area with pizza oven and compost loo, but the site is made for socialising. It's pretty laid-back and has a few rough edges, which gives it the feel of an old fashioned camp site, but with a touch of magic from the creative spaces. You might well meet other guests down at the wood-fired bathtub, round the campfire or walking the riverside trails to local pubs. The resident dogs may be scampering around too, which are more than happy to welcome any new four-legged friends that you’ve brought for them.
When you’re ready for an adventure, head east to explore wild Bodmin Moor or north to the coast for the wide Trebarwith Strand and dramatic scrambles down to hidden coves at Port Quin and Tregardock. Or simply lie back among the stumps and make the hobbit house that nice quiet place where you can finish your book.

Meet Lisa & Neil
Lisa and Neil started Mill Valley about ten years ago, as they felt that there was a shortage of old fashioned campsites where you can have genuine freedom. Where you can light fires, collect firewood and generally unwind. Get back to nature and appreciate life's simple things without the trappings of modern technology. Most of all, they wanted to provide a holiday experience where dogs don’t have to be left behind! Lisa and Neil live in a converted water mill, which is the last working undershot water wheel in Cornwall.
Wildlife & Environment
Mill Valley is situated on a 15-acre organic smallholding in an exceptionally beautiful Cornish wooded valley. Lisa and Neil have a small herd of Dexter and North Devon cattle, as well as a few sheep, some Boer goats and old-breed pigs. Part of the farm is a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its wetland habitat. Only a short distance are two stunning woodland riverside walks and in the spring they are carpeted with bluebells. There is a weir and a natural swimming pool a short walk away – perfect for dogs who like a dip! A mother otter has also been spotted here, teaching her young to fish! Kingfishers are quite regularly seen on the river and sightings of roe deer are nearly an everyday occurrence. Tawny owls are heard most nights and even the occasional magical glimpse of a barn owl.
Mill Valley is off-grid and everything is wood-fired, with a couple of solar lights for lighting at night. Water comes from Lisa and Neil's own borehole. They have planted over 800 trees of over 30 different varieties, and are passionate about tree-planting and the environment.

21/02/2024Aaron

01/02/2024Kate
Fantastic stay. Very peaceful Ian and Lisa made us very welcome we had everything we needed. Dogs had a great time. Loved sitting outside listening to the owls and foxes and it was really cosy sitting by the wood burner when it got chilly. We are going back next month we loved it so much
28/09/2023Tracey
Me and my boyfriend had the best time ever there! Lisa and Neil wow you both have created such a magical place. We really didn’t want to leave. There was no faults what so ever

Had a wonderful relaxing mid-week break at the Stumpy Hobbit. Everything was as advertised and so much more. Very friendly and helpful hosts. The cabin was well equipped and very cosy. Lovely location nice and quiet
22/05/2023Susan
On arrival we were greeted by the owners with a warm welcome and shown to the "stumpy hobbit hut"... Oh my days! It quite literally took our breath away thru our big smiles... The cutest little hut we have ever seen. The fire was roaring as we entered, with Cornish tea coffee and fudge waiting for us too .. the inside was amazing, everything you could possibly need or want when you are having a secluded get away. Always something to look at and notice - a cool shelf, the door, the fairy lights, candles, the windows, the cool books left out to read (thank you!) The toilet was cool- I'm not ashamed to say I was very impressed! Outside is the little kitchen area where we made the best fresh pizza in the pizza oven - Woke up from a very cosy, comfy bed after listening to the owls and seeing the clear star studded night to the birds chirping in the frosty fields - a true picture perfect scene. Hosts told us good walks and places near by, so we had a lovely -albeit - slippery walk by the river ... As a birthday treat- this was just perfect in every way. Thank you

A very interesting experience, extremely enjoyable, back to basics. You will need to be prepared to adapt yourself and allow for time for those home comforts. This site is well thought out and if you require anything, you must think outside the box, rather than expecting everything to be available at a flick of a switch. An experience back to nature in a gorgeous location and if you require peace and quiet this is just the place. Lisa and Neil were lovely hosts and we enjoyed meeting the animals including the wild life. Looking forward to going back in the very near future
27/06/2022Phillip
Cheeky weekend away with my partner, just what we needed. A short stay off grid. Beautifully hand crafted hobbit hut in a rural location. Super friendly hosts, very laid back and welcoming. Great location, easy within reach of other towns.

Exceeded expectations! The whole site was beautiful and Lisa and Neil were extremely welcoming and helpful. We had an amazing stay. The cabin was very cosy and it was a completely new and unique experience. Our only regret was not staying longer :) We visited 2 of the places Lisa and Neil recommended and had such a good time.
20/04/2022Zoe
We had the most wonderful time at Lisa and Neils Stumpy Hobbit, the cabin was bliss, it was amazing to switch off and get back to nature with a roaring fire and outdoor shower! We enjoyed the pizza oven and the wood fired bath and read more books in a week than we have all year! The cabin was so cosy and the location was perfect for getting around north Cornwall - can’t recommend enough!
16/08/2021Gemma
A pleasant weekend stay. Friendly and helpful owners.

My boyfriend and I absolutely loved it, one of the best holidays we’ve ever had! It was a great location that was so quiet and tranquil!
19/07/2021Kathryn
It was a fantastic place to stay, it is so relaxing and a really romantic setting for a couple and a completely different experience. Well worth doing and the cabin was out of this world, the owners were lovely and they organised a lovely hamper for our arrival with local produce for us. I would recommend it highly if you want piece, quiet and a whole different experience of getting away.
12/07/2021Donna
Amazing site and the Stumpy Hobbis fab. Loads of fun and super private, but with the benefit of the rest of the site nearby.
14/06/2021James
It was an awesome, friendly place. With enough seclusion that you could imagine you were by yourselves for miles. -super romantic, thank you!
11/06/2021Charles
Absolutely loved staying here, will definitely be returning
30/04/2021Gemma
Stayed at Mill Valley Stumpy Hole for 3 nights. The wooden cabin was beautifully crafted and a real joy to stay in especially if your a hobbit fan. Myself and my partner stayed here and loved what Mill valley had to offer. Enjoying the slow life with no technology and just enjoying each others company with good food cooked on fire and drinks and laughs sitting and embracing the pleasure of nature around us.
27/04/2021Stephanie
What an incredibly unique and quirky little place. We absolutely loved it and our doggies too, The place was wonky Wood heaven, Stumpy Hobbit was quite magical. So peaceful. No electricity although the solar lights were adequate. Very little phone signal which was wonderful. We'll definitely be going back!
16/04/2021Sue
Our stay at the stumpy hobbit was incredible! We loved every second and so did our dog! The hosts were unbelievably accommodating and helpful. It was great to get away from the London concrete jungle and really immerse in a much more simpler existence. I miss it already.
12/04/2021Ceri
We had a wonderful stay in the Stumpy Hobbit, just what we needed! No TV’s, no phones, just absolute peace, quiet and rest. The handmade hobbit house is a little magic in amongst its private area, it felt like we were on set of the Hobbit! We absolutely loved it and can’t wait to go back! We made pizzas and cooked them in the pizza oven and used the fire in the cabin a lot aswell as candles that were supplied plus we bought some from home. Lovely, romantic get away for the two of us. The people looking after the site were so lovely and very helpful when we needed anything. This is truly like any other place we have visited! Thank you so much! We take away lots of lovely memories!
30/10/2020Louisr
Such a charming place! It was lovely to chat to Lisa and Neil about how their build came about and they really couldn’t of been nicer hosts during our stay. If you’re looking for a raw, rural, rustic getaway then look no further! Thank you for having us!
23/09/2020Carla
We had a fabulous stay, we would go back to Mill Valley in a heartbeat. The hosts were lovely and very welcoming.
17/07/2020Darren
We had the funniest time at the stumpy hobbit, it was such good fun and. Neil & Lisa are both a really lovely couple. They are there if you need them for help otherwise they will leave you too it. It truly is an amazing little place and we will definitely be returning.
26/12/2019mark
What an amazing place this site is and the Stumpy Hobbit is wonderfully unique and beautiful. Exactly what we wanted from a mini-break and the owners were most welcoming. You definitely want to stay here for a brilliant experience.
14/11/2019Derek
The off grid experience was absolutely fantastic. We were greeted by a lovely guy called Russ (and a beautiful cat called Forest) who showed us around and was incredibly helpful. Lisa was away when we arrived but arranged for a lovely lady called Mel to meet us, Mel gave us biscuits and milk which were definitely needed after our 4 hour drive. It was very quiet and very peaceful which meant we could crack on with finishing a book or painting. It was cold at night so make sure you take plenty of layers and blankets! We took 2 torches with us but in hind-site would think about taking a few lanterns! We really did love being there and were sad to leave. We wish we’d booked a few more days.
21/10/2019Sally
Perfect!!!! I wouldn't change a thing. Perfect for dogs as it was a secure site. Hidden away from the other Yurts etc so its the best for privacy and outside space. Owners were very friendly and helpful.
23/08/2019SHARON
Amazing awesome and perfect
31/05/2019Jacqui
We loved the Stumpy Hobbit - it was quirky, very cozy and well equipped. Loads of cooking alternatives (pizza oven and open fire-pit) and a lovely wood-burner in the cabin to cuddle up to after dark. It was very quiet and had lovely walks straight out of the door. Lisa and Neil were excellent hosts and on hand, although we didn't need a thing! We spent 3 lovely days hand-feeding robins and chilling out in the peaceful surroundings. The outside space was excellent so even if it had rained we would have been able to stay outdoors to enjoy the pitter-patter of the raindrops!
16/05/2019morag
We had a fabulous time at the Stumpy Hobbit. Stayed 3 nights in March with wind, rain and sun - and it was all good. Loved being off-grid, taking time just to boil the kettle for tea, listening to the sounds of the wind in the trees, smelling the wood smoke and nature. We slept long and deep, and we will return.
03/03/2019David
We stayed at the stumpy hobbit in February. We were met on site by the lovely owners Lisa and Neil. They showed us around the facilities and the stumpy hobbit and left us to it, no fussing at all. Inside is just as you imagined it to be, quaint and quirky with everything you need for your first night including coffee, tea, milk and even firewood an papers to get your first brew going as you unpack. The stumpy hobbit is built around a tree so you're rocked to sleep as the wind blows. It's was cold but with a nice thick quilt on the bed and the fire crackling we didn't really feel it. All in all a wonderful stay here with all credit to Lisa and Neil for making the stay very very memorable. Would definitely recommend this place to anyone! Thanks you.
08/02/2019John
Perfect for a winter getaway for the two of us- lovely hosts... all we could hear at night was the crackling of the fire and the owls in the trees... we loved having a hot bath after a long walk and a swim in the Atlantic ... and our dog had such fun chasing around in the bushes- we would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a peaceful relaxing break somewhere different
02/01/2019Becky
We had the most amazing stay at the stumpy hobbit. Everything was perfect and I really could not find a single criticism. The whole cabin was incredibly cosy and filled with lovely candles and gorgeous cushions, it was really a magical weekend.
23/11/2018Katie
Lisa was very welcoming and made sure we had everything we needed throughout our stay. The cabin is in a very peaceful & remote location, at night you can hear the owls and see the rabbits and hedgehogs. The log fire made the cabin toasty warm at night. By day we visited Padstow and Wadebridge, we also rode the Camel trail to Bodmin and visited the old Jail stopping for lunch at the orchard halfway there.
22/10/2018Sarah
Had an absolute fantastic time at the Hobbit. As expected. Lisa and her friends in charged of the site this particular weekend were very helpful and kept in touch due to us turning up late but this wasn't an issue. Having the entire place to ourselves was so delightful and we made lots of memories in just 2 nights. Have already recommended this place to friends and family and we will be back very soon.
05/10/2018Tristy
Was amazing! Beautiful location, friendly hosts and easy access to area
02/07/2018Sarah
Was only a short stay over the weekend (2 nights) but had an absolutely fantastic time at the Stumpy Hobbit, didn't want to leave on the Sunday in fact!! Well located, lovely walks close by and within short driving distance of lots of excellent things to do in Cornwall. Very rustic and natural place (which is exactly what we were expecting and wanting) but had some nice little unexpected touches like the solar lighting in the cabin. Everything is very well used but very much fit for purpose and definitely fits in with the overall look/feel/vibe of the whole site. Hosts were also very friendly, polite and approachable when they were on site (usually a couple of intermittent periods of time during each day). Will definitely go back and stay again, probably for longer next time.
18/05/2018Tillie
A great few days in a cosy, quirky space.
09/04/2018Sonia
We couldn't have possibly enjoyed anymore, it was so peaceful, in a beautiful location and to wake up in the morning to the sound of the birds was wonderful. We used the outside cooking facilities both evenings and then star gazed as it was such a clear sky. The Hobbit itself was amazing. Spotlessly clean bedding and towels. The shower facility was fun, we enjoyed having to build the fire and waiting for the water to heat up. There was plenty of hot water for the two of us to shower down. We loved it and an experience we'll reminisce about for many years.
06/04/2018Judith
We had a mini break of living "off the grid" for a couple of days at the Stumpy Hobbit run and built by Lisa and Neil. We had a lovely welcome from them and the Stumpy Hobbit was clean and cosy. Also very dog friendly. The Stumpy Hobbit is full of character and delivers on all angles. The owners Lisa and Neil were fab too, staying in contact with us prior to the holiday due to the snow to check we were still able to make it and very reassuring off we weren't
05/03/2018Ruth
We're super excited to be adding Lisa and Neil's latest space. A wonderful addition to the collection. The feedback for Pixie Yurt should give you a good feel for what a stay at Mill Valley will be like. Book a stay and be the first to write a review!

An experience back to nature in a gorgeous location and if you require peace and quiet this is just the place. Lisa and Neil were lovely hosts and we enjoyed meeting the animals including the wild life. Looking forward to going back in the very near future

My boyfriend and I absolutely loved it, one of the best holidays we’ve ever had! It was a great location that was so quiet and tranquil!

Amazing site and the Stumpy Hobbis fab. Loads of fun and super private, but with the benefit of the rest of the site nearby.

It was an awesome, friendly place. With enough seclusion that you could imagine you were by yourselves for miles. -super romantic, thank you!

Our stay at the stumpy hobbit was incredible! We loved every second and so did our dog! The hosts were unbelievably accommodating and helpful. It was great to get away from the London concrete jungle and really immerse in a much more simpler existence. I miss it already.

Such a charming place! It was lovely to chat to Lisa and Neil about how their build came about and they really couldn’t of been nicer hosts during our stay. If you’re looking for a raw, rural, rustic getaway then look no further! Thank you for having us!

We had a fabulous stay, we would go back to Mill Valley in a heartbeat. The hosts were lovely and very welcoming.

We had the funniest time at the stumpy hobbit, it was such good fun and. Neil & Lisa are both a really lovely couple. They are there if you need them for help otherwise they will leave you too it. It truly is an amazing little place and we will definitely be returning.

What an amazing place this site is and the Stumpy Hobbit is wonderfully unique and beautiful. Exactly what we wanted from a mini-break and the owners were most welcoming. You definitely want to stay here for a brilliant experience.

Perfect!!!! I wouldn't change a thing. Perfect for dogs as it was a secure site. Hidden away from the other Yurts etc so its the best for privacy and outside space. Owners were very friendly and helpful.

Amazing awesome and perfect

Thanks you.

We had the most amazing stay at the stumpy hobbit. Everything was perfect and I really could not find a single criticism. The whole cabin was incredibly cosy and filled with lovely candles and gorgeous cushions, it was really a magical weekend.

A great few days in a cosy, quirky space.

We're super excited to be adding Lisa and Neil's latest space. A wonderful addition to the collection. The feedback for Pixie Yurt should give you a good feel for what a stay at Mill Valley will be like. Book a stay and be the first to write a review!
