Overview
The quirky train carriage gleams inside and out as if it has just rolled out of the station for the first time. As you turn the chunky brass handle on the door of this ancient London Brighton & South Coast Railway carriage, you climb aboard into another era. The rich mahogany panelling takes you back in time to the glory days of rail travel. Once inside, there are the original fittings (luggage racks, rounded windows, leather straps and brasswork), but the tradition gives way slightly in the presence of a fully equipped kitchen and adjoining loo and shower at one end.
In the main saloon there is a long bench seat that converts into a double bed. Of course, you could spend your days in the living van a few steps from the coach, which is gaily decorated and equally comfortable. The van's seating can also convert into two single beds (ideal for children), so you can sleep four people in the whole camp together and then invite each other over for tea!
There are pubs and restaurants, markets and teashops where you can explore the area's varied produce, or why not book a First Class cream tea or special meal served to you by Charles and Marion in the stunning Victorian carriage at the bottom of the garden. You're a fossil's throw from the Jurassic Coast for some lovely beach walks and surrounded by endless fields and hills.

Meet your hosts

The carriage is situated in a corner of the garden of High Cross Cottage overlooking a wildflower meadow and distant hills. The cottage is the home of Charles and Marion Gardner and their two children, Georgina and Naomi (and dog Rusty). Although adjacent to a family home, the carriage and living van are situated in their own small enclosed garden.

Wonderfully quirky stay in camping coach and the associated van. Very picturesque, rural location and the coach and van themselves were incredibly well maintained and clean. It was cosy yes, but the available space was very cleverly utilised and every inch of space was maximised. We did have a fear that it might have been cold inside but that was not the case as the heaters were very effective & kept the coach nice and toasty! The location proved to be a great base for our walks around the Dorset coast. Whilst the coach and van are very close to the main house, Marion and her family afforded us great privacy but were close by if we had any problems (we didn't!). One thing to note: it is a narrow drive up to the house and a relatively small turning circle once up there. This was previously advised so we were prepared but may be slightly daunting for some drivers. A very enjoyable say in a unique environment!

We had a great time exploring the Dorset coast whilst staying in the camping carriage as our base. We only noticed the book of the history of the coaches while we were packing up to leave . Wish we'd realised earlier! Senior moment We had everything we needed in such novel accommodation. It was surprising how warm we could make it tool Location was very peaceful and with no light pollution its great for stargazing We found that both pubs in Beaminster were very good for food in the evenings All in all we loved staying here

Thoroughly enjoyed staying at this lovingly restored railway carriage. Such a clever use of space. Everything you need. Had a couple of evenings enjoying dinner in the garden being entertained by the sheep - and the beautiful sunsets.

We had an absolutely wonderful time at the Camping Coach. Marion was a good host, and although wasn’t available when we arrived as soon as she was back came to introduce herself. It was a lovely place to stay and so peaceful. The Camping Coach was fully equipped with everything needed.
21/04/2023Yvonne

Amazing place! The setting was wonderful, the hosts were lovely.
09/09/2022Marc
Gloriously sunny weekend in the cosy camping coach. Great location, with beautiful views over open fields. Equipped with everything we needed, including extra blankets and a coal fire for the chilly evenings. The carriage retains all its character, and the sofa which turned in a double bed was very comfy. The additional shepherd hut next door is perfect for a bit more space …or in our case sundowners over looking the fields. Great hosts, extra milk and biscuits much appreciated. Location wise, it is well placed for great walks, access to the Jurassic coast and pretty Dorset villages.
25/02/2022Karen
Had such a lovely relaxing stay. A lot of thought had clearly gone into every aspect of the conversion and decoration in the carriage. Thoughtful amenities such as tea, coffee, sugar, spices, milk and a welcome gift of biscuits were a lovely touch. Perfect for a little get away and in a beautiful setting.
06/02/2022Laura
We enjoyed a restful stay in this quirky railway carriage. We found it to be comfortable and the convenient location for exploring the local coast.

Lovely! Really enjoyed the stunning location and quirky accommodation. Super hosts too!
31/05/2021Lucy
Blissful, fabulous location, excellent hosts and wonderfully restored (but with all amenities) railway carriage. Having the shepherds hut gave extra space although for 2 of us we used this to dine. Perfect getaway and switch off from the world in a relaxing village.
07/05/2021Amanda
We had a lovely time despite the wild weather - the contrast between out and inside was even more dramatic as we were lovely and cosy.
28/10/2020Anna
Our stay was truly magical, tranquil and cozy. The carriage had everything we needed and Marion keeps it spotless. She was very friendly and the afternoon tea was delicious. Could not recommend this place more, stuff peaceful and relaxing. Our six year old boy loved it, lots of board games inside and another trailer next door to relax or play in, or sleep in if your child is older. Lovely fireplace with plenty of coal, bed was nice and cosy too and we didn’t need the heater, Del cosy enough with just the fire. Lots of nice cozy bedding and blankets. We will definitely be going back, this place was a little piece of heaven, a chance to unwind.
19/10/2020Karina
It was lovely, felt like a true break. It was like a home away from home with such a reasonably sized kitchenette and a lovely space to eat, play games and finally sleep. The uniqueness of the train carriage with old artefacts and clever displays. The wood and coal fire added such a cosy feel and was fun to get going. It was also very private although in their back garden, yet felt like we were more in the fields as we overlooked them. Marion the hostess was so helpful with naps of places to walks and recommendations. We went to a lovely beach and foodie cafe on the beach we had an amazing breakfast at and then a beautiful walk with our dog along the coast. She also put on a scrumptious afternoon tea working around our planned day. In fact we were pretty decadent as had the afternoon tea in their amazing coach carriage and were provided with a whole Victoria sponge cake and the best scones I’ve had! We were tested to a history of the coaches by her husband who kindly sat and indulged my husbands questions and Interest. There was even an adjacent living van where there was an array of board games which kept us entertained. While day times walks in the forest was lovely with our dog.
31/01/2020Jada
We had a lovely peaceful & relaxing break in Dorset. The Camping Coach was beautifully converted, with an excellent attention to detail. The garden was at its best & we appreciated having our own area. We spent many hours walking & exploring the amazing Dorset coast, which we will definately return to. Another successful C&S holiday. Thank you.
27/05/2019Sue
We had a fantastic stay at the camping coach. If you want relaxation, peace and nothing but the great outdoors then this is for you. The owners are so welcoming and our dog enjoyed the company of the owners dogs, pip and rusty. The only downfall was when we had to leave we all just wanted to stay.
23/05/2019Melissa
Two nights peace and quiet in unique accommodation with al mod cons
13/05/2019John
My two friends and I stayed at Camping Coach near Bridport and it was such a beautiful and lovely experience. I am suffering from post holiday blues it was so perfect. Little lambs running around at the end of our plot and birds singing along to our radio. Marion, the host, was warm and welcoming. Equally we were left to ourselves. Staying on a vintage train carriage was amazing and it was so well restored!
08/04/2019Cat
This is a great place to stay, the camping coach is so cosy with the coal stove alight. The coach has been beautifully restored. We had to make up our bed from the couch but it was so simple to do. We were greeted by Marion who was delightful and very welcoming. The coach is in the family garden but very private and surrounded on 2 sides by fields with rabbits and pheasants. The Dorset countryside is stunning and it was not far from some beautiful beaches. I can’t think of anything negative to say about the place, highly recommended.
19/03/2019Maryia
Very relaxing stay, just what was needed.
22/02/2019Mark
All superb.
28/09/2018Andrew
Very welcoming, easy to communicate with Marion. Very comfortable stay, all you need was there, children loved the magic of staying in van and coach. Lots to do nearby and has a great holiday.
09/07/2018Mark
A lovely peaceful, quiet setting
20/06/2018MARY
A perfect short break. The coach was quirky but very comfortable and well equipped. The location was brilliant for visiting this area of beautiful Dorset. Marion was an excellent host making sure we had everything we required. We felt well and truly rested after 4 days here.
16/04/2018Jayne
We really enjoyed staying in the camping coach. The beautiful views and the birdsong were great. The folder of things to do was very comprehensive and having maps of the area was fantastic.
02/04/2018Lizzie
Stayed for a long weekend in September. Beautiful location and idyllic quiet setting. Loved the Camping Coach, especially the cute little kitchen and the wooden carriage to sleep in at night. Marion & Charles very pleasant and helpful. Eddie our dog loved it too!
15/09/2017Karen
As railway enthusiasts this short break was just perfect. Staying in the camping coach was unique and thoroughly enjoyable. The owners were very welcoming and we appreciated the time they took to see we had everything we needed and showed us photos and explained about the obviously detailed work needed for the restoration of all the carriages they had, including the one we stayed in.
08/09/2017Julie
We all had an absolutely amazing stay.
21/08/2017Tracy
Absolutely loved our stay here. The place is delightful and the owner is a lovely lady. Would definitely recommend a visit.
07/08/2017Ben
We had a wonderful few days away in the Dorset countryside. Our host, Marion left the Camping Coach all ready for us including flowers and a wonder 'slab' of Victoria sponge cake.
23/11/2016Miss A
We stayed for a weekend, Friday to Monday. It was lovely, clean, gorgeous Nik naks, comfortable beds, quiet gorgeous surroundings and a lovely host, Marion who was very helpful and friendly.
28/10/2016nikki
We had a wonderful time. It was clean, comfy and cozy. Girls loved the sheppards hut.
24/10/2016Lindsey
A beautiful location, the camping coach was perfect with everything we needed. The owners were close by and gave us a warm welcome but were not intrusive at all.
12/08/2016Julie
The accommodation was absolutely perfect: the train carriage is beautiful and very well-equipped and the hut was an extra bonus and very much enjoyed by my ten-year-old as her own private space. Beautiful setting overlooking a field, and the hosts were lovely, and despite the Camping Coach being close to the owners' house, we didn't see at all overlooked. Wonderful. Could have stayed a lot longer!
29/07/2016Melanie
Fabulous! A well kitted-out and comfortable camping coach in a beautiful location.

It was so restful and to wake with the bleating of lambs and the squarks of pheasants was so wonderful. The coach was brilliant and had everything we needed. Ray felt as if he had returned to being a scout when lighting the coal burner - which is difficult at 67! The burner kept us cosily warm most of the night.

When we arrived we were greeted by Marion and shown around the very comfortable and beautifully restored railway carriage. It is in a wonderfully peaceful location and there is even a pub within a 45minute walk, perfect for an evening drink or supper if you do not want to make the most of the well equipped kitchen in the Carriage. It was a very relaxing couple of days away from it all.
22/07/2015Jane
It was superb. Accomodation was delightful and a warm welcome from host, including homemade scones and milk in the fridge which was thoughtful for 1st night. She also shared her knowledge of local area. I would be very happy to recommend the place

We arrived around 7pm on a Friday evening after a terrible journey from London and pouring rain. We couldn't have had a better greeting. Not only were our hosts charming and helpful, but the Camping Coach itself was simply beautiful. We had picked up fish and chips locally as we arrived and thoroughly enjoyed laying the beautifully polished table and enjoying our meal and a chilled bottle of wine looking out at the stunning scenery. From then on the whole weekend was fantastic. The Camping Coach had everything one could need and every detail inside has been beautifully and sympathetically restored or added, the bed was beautifully comfortable, the countryside amazing and the nearby towns charming. All in all a super place to stay.

This was a very good break for the two of us. The Railway carriage is in a beautiful, peaceful, rural situation at the edge of the village of Netherbury. It is lovingly restored and has all the facilities needed for a comfortable holday. We aren't railway enthusiasts particularly but it was a really "different", interesting place to stay in. We didn't need to light the fire as there is a small electric heater and it was quite warm weather but it was all ready to light if we'd needed. There's plenty to do in the area. We divided our time between visiting National Trust properties (Montacute, Lytes Cary, Hardy's Cottage, Max Gate) and walking near the coast (Golden Cap). Although there is a good cooker and are adequate cookery equipment to cook meals we eat our main meals out and there was plenty of choice in Bridport and surrounding pubs. Marion, the owner, was very friendly and helpful to us. There isn't anything but good to say about it. The entrance to the carriage is up some quite steep steps so it wouldn't be a good place to go if these would give you a problem. I suggest that like us you go now before age brings on such problems!

Sunsets, scrabble & cider! We had a brilliant stay at The Camping Coach. We were made to feel very welcome (especially by Rusty the dog!). Set in a beautiful part of Dorset, close to many attractions for walking, beaches etc. The Coach itself has everything you'd need - warm, cosy and ample cooking facilities. We had cream tea in the other beautiful carriage which was so unique, not to mention Marion's lovely scones! We left smiling and would definitely recommend to anyone. Thank you :-)

We had a fabulous weekend for hubby's 60th birthday, carriage was everything we'd hoped for & more. Wonderful warm & cosy, perfect facilities, we really couldn't fault it in anyway. Charles & Marion are charming, helpful but not intrusive & have obviously put much thought into both the renovation of the coach & van, & anticipating the needs of their visitors. We really didn't want to leave!
27/02/2015Jane
What a peaceful few days- stayed with my wife and two boys ( aged 14 and 8) and the most striking comment by the eldest on departure day was 'Dad, i've just realised they do not have a TV!!!' we lit the fire, cooked some good food, listened to the radio and i lost miserably at monopoly; a well needed break. Thanks Owners very accommodating whilst letting us enjoy our own space.
20/02/2015Mark
The camping coach is beautifully restored, and in a lovely location. Everything you need is there, and our stay was very relaxing and nostalgic. Would like to recommend it, but don't want it overbooked so we can't stay again!!

Wonderful! From start to finish we were impressed with the care and attention of Marion and Charles, the owners. The Camping Coach offers quiet space and cozy comfort to relax in and to use as a base to explore.

"We had a perfect weekend .The coach is so beautifully restored and exceedingly well equipped and the hosts really charming people . The situation was great- quite and peaceful with lots of great walks and not too far to the coast. The coach was so delightful ............a really special place to stay. Our girls( teenagers) were in the van- that was lovely too and they enjoyed their own space - it was very cold and frosty but we were very cosy with a lovey coal fire and fab duvets and blankets and even hot water bottles.THANKYOU"

"It was absolutely faultless. The carriage was warm and had such amazing period detail. We received an exceptionally hospitable welcome from the owners and they really went the extra mile. I would thoroughly recommend staying there and partaking in the dining experience in the first class Victorian Saloon"

"We had an amazing time in the beautifully and lovingly restored Victorian railway carriage. The attention to detail was outstanding. We found it very cosy and comfortable, with all the facilities 1st class. The road van was also very cosy in the evenings, especially with the coal fire roaring. Marion, the owner, also arranged for us to dine in another carriage onsite, which indeed was the best dining experience we have ever enjoyed, in delightful surroundings, almost the Orient Express!! Wonderful!!

"We (Mum, Dad and 5yr old) had a lovely time. The setting was beautiful, the coach and shepard's hut were gorgeous and very cosy. It was a real novelty to stay in such a characterful and beautifully restored train carriage. My daughter got to play with the hosts two daughters and enjoyed their trampoline very much. We all got on so well that we were invited into their home for a quiz that the girls had organised! Such a lovely family. Plenty of great and interesting places to visit in the area."

"We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Dorset. The Camping Coach is set in beautiful surroundings and has every comfort you could require. Our hosts were a nice family who remained unobtrusive but very helpful and friendly when you needed them. All in all a great place to stay."

"We really enjoyed our stay. The carriage and wagon have been restored to an excellent standard with lots of interesting vintage details, while retaining an homely feel and an eye to practicality and comfort, rather than feeling like museum pieces! I found the kitchen well equipped, we like to cook our meals from scratch and bake while away as we have special dietary needs and found plenty of equipment to help us prepare our planned dishes. We found the bed very comfortable too, once assembled. Although the carriage is quite close to the owners home, we found they managed a nice thoughtful balance between being helpful and friendly and allowing us our privacy too. The food gifts on arrival were appreciated too. We were blessed with good weather for our stay and spent quite a bit of time in the private garden area watching the sun go down and listening to the sound of bells from the local church from time to time in an otherwise quite peaceful rural setting. We didn't miss a TV at all, and the availability of wi fi was useful to keep in touch when we wanted to."

We had an absolutely wonderful time at the Camping Coach. Marion was a good host, and although wasn’t available when we arrived as soon as she was back came to introduce herself. It was a lovely place to stay and so peaceful. The Camping Coach was fully equipped with everything needed.

We had a lovely couple of nights break away in this warm and comfortable camping coach especially as the weather was heavy wind and rain. It looks stunning and has been beautifully renovated and we had every thing we needed. A great place to stay. We hope to return again with other members of our family

Blissful, fabulous location, excellent hosts and wonderfully restored (but with all amenities) railway carriage. Having the shepherds hut gave extra space although for 2 of us we used this to dine. Perfect getaway and switch off from the world in a relaxing village.

Thank you.

Two nights peace and quiet in unique accommodation with al mod cons

A perfect short break. The coach was quirky but very comfortable and well equipped. The location was brilliant for visiting this area of beautiful Dorset. Marion was an excellent host making sure we had everything we required. We felt well and truly rested after 4 days here.

We really enjoyed staying in the camping coach. The beautiful views and the birdsong were great. The folder of things to do was very comprehensive and having maps of the area was fantastic.

Stayed for a long weekend in September. Beautiful location and idyllic quiet setting. Loved the Camping Coach, especially the cute little kitchen and the wooden carriage to sleep in at night. Marion & Charles very pleasant and helpful. Eddie our dog loved it too!
